Shadowsmith I’m doing 9mm, it’s what I shoot the most and all the parts were available at my local stores. I plan to do 308 and 5.56/223 later on as well.

I wouldn't recommend using 70% rubbing alcohol. The other 30% is water. You wouldn't want water on your dies. Instead use 99.9% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning.

I did not clean my new Hornady 308 Resizing die before I used it & My Lubed Cases were hard to Resize into the Die, So I am about to give them a good cleaning & then try hem again to Resize etc.That Air hole in the Die must be cleaned good I am told etc.

Red tail The vent hole should be cleaned if it's plugged with grease(most come this way from the factory). It's always good practice to keep your dies clean. What lube are you using?

So basically the "special die cleaner " is just alcohol or any other metal cleaner. We just don't want any oil inside the dies? Great simple info. Thank you Shadow smith.

Rob, As time goes by and your dies get really dirty the need for other cleaners could be needed. But alcohol has always served me well. thanks for the feedback and please subscribe

Just my 2 cents.., ISO-HEET (for removing water from your fuel tank) is 99% isopropyl alcohol.

After I clean my Dies I dust the inside of them with some Mota Mica As it helps Lub the insides of the Dies also etc.

Should be able to, Lyman presses use standard thread for dies.

I drop the whole Dies into a cup with the Alcohol & let them soak clean, Then dry them off good etc

So why exactly do we need to clean the factory protective lube off of new dies? If it's good to leave on the outside why bother removing it from the insides? Especially since you're gonna be introducing sizing lube via the cases... What happens if you don't do that initial cleaning?

I clean the inside of the dies to remove any foreign debris. Nothing wrong with the lube applied at the factory.

tjmooremusic, I am only applying oil to the outer surface(s) of of the die, just to protect it from rust during handling. You are correct! Oil would create a problem if it was applied inside the die ( The only time I completely coat the dies in oil, would be for longterm storage. Then I would clean them before use.) Your case lube will be enough protect for the working surfaces of the die. Use a good lube

tjmooremusic, I normally use Hoppes 9 oil for the ext of the dies. I let my case lube handle the interior

New does should be used and left alone. They are perfect when new. You only are going to ruin things by taking them apart

Maintenance is important with all tools. I clean anything that has been machines before I use it. You never know what material can be left behind. 👍🏻
