detailed instructions how to clean the electrostatic tweeters of your Sony SA-S1, SA-EX100, SA-EX200 or SS-H79000 loudspeakers. It's a risky operation that may permanently damage your tweeter if not performed correctly!

I did this some years back on a couple of tweeters coming from a heavy smoker. After cleaning the foils I had to re-coat them to fully restore the sound. Used a very thin layer of Kontakt Chemie Graphit 33 conductive coating for that.

Please tell me. I got a non-working twitter after the previous owner tried to clean it, it works but is quiet. The membrane is not damaged, but as I can tell from this video, the membrane is wide enough to hold the edges of the polished metal plate. In my case, the edges of the membrane are narrower than the rectangular opening of the polished plate. Presumably it was pulled out by the previous owner, instead he glued the membrane directly to the gray plate with holes (one of two) I decided to glue the membrane back to the polished metal frame (which has black rubber on the inside) as shown in the video. But since my membrane is narrower than the rectangular hole, I glued the edges with regular adhesive tape. It didn’t work. And so I think, maybe the plate is conductive, and it needs to have electrical contact with the polished plate? And I also heard that you can buy a mylar film and make a membrane yourself. But probably one of the sides of this membrane (or both sides) should be covered with something conductive? And when people clean the membrane of dirt with cleaning agents, can the conductive layer be erased? If only one side of the film has a conductive coating, is it important to stick the film to the plate only on this side, or does it make no difference?

@@Monster-ng9go Hi, If the conductive coating is completely removed, or if you've put new mylar in, you could recoat it with Kontaktchemie GRAPHIT 33 Conductive coating. It's designed to avoid electrostatic build-up on surfaces so conducts reasonably well. Be aware, spray from a distance, and even then the membrane will become pitch-black. But it did restore the high for me on speakers with totally silent tweeters. I don't remember which side of the membrane I recoated. Was too long ago and recently I sold the speakers so cannot check anymore. It maybe doesn't make a difference. If I have to guess I probably coated the side which is flush with the metal plate. I've had more of these speakers, bought a second pre-owned set, and have seen two types of tweeters. The first one I was able to split the two outer metal plates and isolate the one middle plate with the membrane and re-coat. The other one was of a type I believe is the same you now have, with the membrane firmly attached to the plate with the holes. I didn't dare to force it apart and ended with just cleaning the membrane (with a brush through all the little holes with isopropanol). That did remove a lot of dirt build-up (probably nicotin) and restored the high. Results may vary.

@@maartenvanbreemen4740 Thank you, the main rule seems to be that the membrane should not be conductive from both sides. with only one. Since the membrane (the side covered with graphite) and the electric stator are very close to each other, isn't their contact a disaster? and in the case of creating a custom membrane, I think it is worth paying special attention to recreating the insulating rubber frame so that the stator does not touch the membrane.

Hello! I have a SONY SA-S1 speaker, I did as shown in the video, unfortunately it didn't help! I want to coat it with Kontakt Chemie Graphit 33. My question is, should the membrane itself be protected from treatment? Only the metal surface should be treated? And should it be done on both sides? Thank you in advance!

First of all: I'm not an expert. I just tried this and it worked for me. My main point was to clean the membrane itself because a lot of filth had accumulated (I bought it from a smoker). In the process I also cleaned all other surfaces. But the point was to clean the moving parts because filth will make it heavier and therefor more difficult to move. Good luck!

Why did SONY go to all this trouble to make this? It was never made again after maybe 1995 or 1996...it was only made for 1 or 2 years. Do you think the MHC E90X is much better since it doesnt have active speakers?

Hi, I really need help. I bought the SA-S1 speakers. The tweeter plays very quietly. I suspect it needs to be cleaned. Tell me what means to clean so as not to damage the conductive layer on the membrane. I live in Ukraine, what kind of cleaning agent will be safe. Many thanks. Paul

Hi Mark! I understand correctly, can I clean the membrane with alcohol? Alcohol should be how much percentage? 96? In your video, I see you are cleaning the blues wonder , a cleaner. If I wipe it with alcohol, will the conductive layer on the film deteriorate?
@audioidiotscom
@audioidiotscom 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-kh4wk5md4q I can't remember for sure. I have cleaned 3 or 4 sets in total. maybe start with a cleaning solvent like blue wonder. and if that does not work use a high percentage alcohol. One of the comments mentions Kontakt Chemie Graphit 33 conductive coating to recoat it.

DON'T LISTEN TO LEO SP! Cleaning speakers properly ALWAYS makes them work better. Especially motion panel speakers that require a thin piece of magnetic film to move with linearity in order to operate as the manufacturer intended. Dust, grit, dirt and hair gets in between the mechanism and ruins its piston-like motion causing its movement to be limited in certain or all areas! This is distortion! Leo Sp, you need to spread facts, not lies! If you don't know something, stay quiet about it! If your woofer gets dirt in the magnet, it could seize. If your tweeter gets grit in the silk-dome, it could tear. If your subwoofer gets a dirty surround from being behind a grill for too long, it could result in foam rot. If an AMT tweeter gets dusty, it sounds like shit. If an electrostatic panel gets dirt in it, it will not move correctly or at all!
