I love Martin Logan, for classical, vocal and acoustic, the hybrids have come a long way , and sound very integrated, wish that vulnerability of the stators would improve too,, they remain very prone to deterioration,, none the less, ESL is my favorite type of speaker, so natural,, even more so than magnetic array / planar speakers ... The first ESL I ever listened to the 57 Quad, a mono speaker blew my mind,, never heard jazz vocals like that before,, and then the Martin Logan hybrid with classical arias,, such amazing treble clarity ,,, yep everyone should discover the magic of ESL, they should be more affordable with better warranty / serviceability though ;-) Yay Martin Logan :-) Yay ESL

Not really. Most of the time they use them to listen to music but even as background music a good sound system will sound amazing vs a mediocre system. My friends hang out in my music room and it's perfectly ok to play music as background music but at the same time it sounds really good and we just enjoy hanging out there the most.

If the sound is the same from the rear (albeit 180 degrees out of phase) does that not mean that these need very careful positioning in regards to walls? Does the proximity to walls, coupled with the 30 degree angle (now focussing the sound rather than dispersing it) not need to be taken into account? How does the width of the panel affect the phase cancellation and is this 'tuned' to the panel?

@@n.lyndley.9889 I made that comment when I was 17. I have since experienced quite a few ML electrostats and have realised they all sound broken The rare measurement of their old electrostats shows the clear flaws with the design, and it seems those flaws have carried over into their modern offerings (obviously, it's an inherently flawed design, just like single driver "full range" loudspeakers)

Sigh...that's the problem. I have 3 pairs of MartinLogans and every 6-10 years you need to replace the panels because dust and humidity affects them. At some point they become completely muffled and unlistenable. It doesn't help that MartinLogan nearly tripled the prices of replacement panels a few years ago.

It's interesting that MartinLogans have a traditional cone speaker built in for bass assist, whereas Magnepans do not. It's not really a right/wrong answer, more a matter of preference, but I'd be curious if people who are critical of Magnepan bass levels (and the bigger ones can get loud, just not feel it in your chest level) are satisfied by MartinLogan bass.

So… why then are the most accurate speakers dynamic studio monitors? If the dynamic driver is inherently inferior, why cannot electrostats better them in resolution? Similarly, the most accurate headphones use magnetoplanars, not electrostats nowadays. Stax used to lead in headphone resolution, but has since been surpassed due to electrostats’ lacklustre bass reproduction and their typical phasing errors between L and R channels.
@martinjandijkstra3205

My guess is that studiomonitors dont need to have the best resolution. They should have decent SPL and tonality. At those points they can be better than stats.

They blame the traditional moving coil speaker is not accurate enough and adds destortion and guess what do they use to produce the lower frequencies? Yep, a traditional moving coil speaker! Haha, what a joke. Sound quality is as good as the large amount of money you spend on it, sound is interpreted by the 'colorful' brain, the more you spend the better it sounds.
