I repair and care for leather professionally. Almost perfect method (big kudos for not dunking!) - HOWEVER there are 2 things here that are UNSAFE for any leather. Brasso and Gonzo will harm leather, making it age faster, but the effect is delayed, so you don't connect the cause and effect intuitively. DO NOT USE ANY product unless specifically labeled for the type of leather you have. Instead, to clean the brass remove all fittings possible before using Brasso or use extreme care to not get it on the sides where it may touch the leather (which you pretty much did here). Instead of Gonzo, to disinfect / deodorize: The ONLY safe disinfectant for leather is ozone. Fire recovery cleaning services have ozone chambers that will destroy all mold, bacteria, viruses, fungus and all odors - even smoke or skunk - in a few hours. Otherwise, to deodorize, expose to high air circulation and let odor gradually dissipate - which can take days to weeks or longer, depending on the odor source. Why? Acidity (pH) mismatch causes permanent leather fiber destruction. Leather has a pH of 4.5 (moderately acidic) like coffee or tomatoes. The bigger the mismatch the stronger the effect. Differences in pH are exponential - every point is 10x the effect of the next. Gonzo is labeled for use on "floors, upholstery, rugs/carpets, clothing, vinyl & more." It does NOT say safe for use on leather. The Gonzo ad info says it's natural, gentle, safe for people and pets and "pH neutral" (= 7 which is NOT SAFE for leather). BUT the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) states Gonzo Stain Remover is pH is 11, which is very basic, same as most general surface cleaners - and not far from chlorine bleach (pH 12) or oven cleaner (pH 13). Brasso is pH 11 to 11.5. You can easily find the pH of any product online in their MSDS. So the difference from leather at 4.5 to 11 means Gonzo and Brasso are 50 million x more basic than leather! That is the same as wiping your skin with diluted chlorine bleach. Diluting does not change pH, just thins the effect (like dropping fewer bombs). Using pH 11 on leather is the same as you taking a bath with bleach added and not being able to rinse it off. Ever. Have you seen leather chair arms or headrests that looked rotted away? That is the result of body oils at pH 5 to 6 - only a .5 to 1.5 difference from leather - after years of exposure. Respect pH if you want your bag to last!

Hi Barbara, that a great tip. I have a Coach 9966 that I over conditioned. I also got caught out in the rain & it now has water marks. Can I clean the leather & recondition bag again or a total rehab with dunk even though this has been done previously? What brand leather cleaner & conditioner do you recommend for this type of bag/full grain vinatge leather? I previously used Saphir products on it. Any help would be appreciated as I am unexperienced. Thank you.

@@irenepeabody7024 If what you mean by "over-conditioned" is you have a haze, residue or oiliness at the surface, the fix for that could be A. Heat with a blow-dryer blowing across, not straight at, the surface. This will open the leather matrix and help the conditioner soften and flow in better. The correct heat is whatever you can stand when you hold your hand on the leather for 30 seconds. Focus on a square foot or less at one time. If this does not improve it in about a minute, stop. B. Buff with a soft bush, like for buffing shoes, or a T-shirt, or similar soft cloth. C. Contact the maker of the conditioner for advice. Water spots can be the color actually migrating within the leather, or may be mostly the conditioner near the surface. Dye in leather is floating in between the fibers of the leather matrix (think 3-D fabric or web). The spaces are filled in the tanning process with "fat liquor" - a mix of waxes / oils/ resins / fats, in which the dye is suspended. Water can displace this and push the color to the edges of the wet area, where it is concentrated and looks like a dark ring. But first try wiping with a little more conditioner and see if that does it. Re-wetting all over can help the color spread back out evenly. Wipe with water all over or do a short dunk, just to get the surface wet - no detergent - wipe away excess water and allow to dry. To prevent water spots, I recommend Leather Protector by ADV Leather - expensive, but well worth it. It's a moisturizer / conditioner with added resins that will add water and light soil resistance without affecting the feel or sealing the leather completely. It must be reapplied to maintain the protection. If you use the bag daily, apply monthly at least. advleather.com/product-list.html Note: The ADV cleaner or any other liquid leather cleaner is NOT for this absorbent leather. You can use baby wipes for quick surface cleaning.

Thank you for the vid. Do you genuinely recommend the “Apple ..” cleaner and conditioner for leather? Like, if you put your hand on your heart :) because I have an old soft leather jacket it was my mom’s and my mom isn’t here anymore unfortunately, so it’s precious to me. And now that jacket’s got mold all over it so I’m looking for a good leather cleaner and conditioner (I do understand that I might need to use something else to treat the mold before applying a cleaner). If you can advise another leather cleaner and conditioner please feel free, I’d highly appreciate it! Thank you.

Please take the jacket to a fire recovery cleaning service for ozone treatment. I am a leather care pro. It is the only thing that will safely kill the mold in leather and prevent odor returning. Anything else that kills mold will damage leather. Be sure to store in a cloth bag on a hanger and keep air space around or mold may come back and spread to other items. Without the ozone treatment you only remove the surface mold and not the majority of it - the "roots" that grow deep into the leather. If that part is not killed, the next time it gets damp or has no air circulation, the mold will come back much bigger and faster.

You forgot to clean the brass D rings on side of bag and the inside zipper. When "restoring " or " Refurbishing " a bag you must not forget ALL brass. Thus is just simply cleaning and not " Restoring " when a bag is restored or refurbished it is done so in soapy water. Then dried and the steps you apply here are the last steps to restoration.
