Everyone seems to throw out good surplus because of the way they look. With a little work you can bring back a piece of history and use it.

Clean mold, dirt, etc, and corrosion on metal parts with a stiff DRY bristol brush (shoe brush). soak in clean motor oil a few hours, take them out, stuff some empty mags in them, let them soak in the hot sun, DONE. Cheap, easy. preserves. waterproofs, lasts forever just ask the old-timers. They didn't use SPECIAL soaps, preservers, waxes, conditioners, and blah blah blah. You are going into battle with these, not going to a wedding! C'mon maaaaan!!!👍

APEX has some really cheap ammo pouches rn. I bought a couple for 7$-15$ each. Theyre in really good shape actually. Theres not even any dirt on them or anything. I just need to air them out and put some linseed oil on them and they should be good to go. I got a left side M95 steyr pouch for 7$, USGI canvas M1 garand pouch for 10$ or something like that. and a Yugo mauser pouch for $10-15. besides the Mil surp smell theyre great.

I've got some sks pouches that got flattened. Any tips how to reshape them or stiffen them?
@thegoodlife20213 жыл бұрын
I would try to wet them down. Shape them, and stuff them rags till they dry. Then hit them with some saddle soap or neatsfoot oil.

Years ago, I bought some unissued Romanian mag pouches in bad condition/ They were so flat, stiff and brittle I almost tossed them out. I tried all kinds of stuff, and nothing seemed to work. Finally, I tossed them in a tub of clean motor oil for hours, took them out, stuffed some mags in them, and let them bake in the hot sun. Occasionally, I'd lather them up again on the outside with the motor oil with a paint brush and let them continue to soak while they hung in the sun. That was probably 20+ years ago. About 3 weeks ago, I was showing my sons them, and they looked shaped, flexible, and very pliable and felt exactly as they did when I put them away 20 years ago. I've also done this to my old milsurp leather slings and scabbards to without a problem.

do you coat them on both sides? i mean both sides of the leather
@thegoodlife20214 жыл бұрын
Daniel Castillo I have not, I generally use enough product and time for some to work through. It probably wouldn’t hurt anything but The split leather on the inside may soak up more than you want to use. And I don’t know kind of creep from the product you may encounter after you put something in the pouches. If you are worried or think you may want to force the pores in the leather I suppose you could heat the pouch under a hairdryer for a few minutes. It would open pores up and allow more product to be soaked deeper in the pores.

Why mink oil? What is it anyway? Why not walnut oil?
@thegoodlife20214 жыл бұрын
I’ve used mink oil for years. I’ve had that small bucket for close to 10 years. A little goes a long way. I’ve always had very good luck with leather taking it in and making it soft and pliable. I’ve never used walnut oil. Not above it. Use it, let me know your experience.
