Cleaning the Nasty Forgotten Vw Beetle - Yard Find - What's inside ?

Brings back memories! Back in the late 80s I picked up a Super Beetle for $300 from where it was stuck behind a McDonald's. Owner said it ran fine when parked; they went inside to eat and it wouldn't crank. I paid him, looked around and plugged the starter wire back on, adjusted the points, and walked next door and bought a battery. That thing ran so sweet! I brought son #2 home from the hospital in it when he was born.

Alittle knowledge goes along way, i'd like find a deal like that, first you don't see very many old vw's anymore & second they'd want a small fortune for it.

Back in the late 1980s, we always passed on Supers because the front end parts were not being produced. We’d see an old Beetle from the back, walk around it, see that it was a Super and just walk away. It good to see that those parts have become available these days, especially seeing the prices of aircooled VWs going up all the time.

I think Mick Jagger's tongue might be a bit cleaner, I know he can be a 'potty mouth' sometimes though! 💋That car cleaned up well and as the oil is good I think it will run no problem. Super beetle doesn’t look terrible. Nice to see the reflectors falling off the rear light units when you were washing it. They are/were bad looking additions. New shop looks to have a lot of space in it, a couple of lifts in it and it will be spot on

Pro tip with shop vac shovel big stuff out first then use shop vac less time cleaning vac plus more suction.

I had a '72 Super beetle and hated it. Some kind of automatic shifter that the clutch is in the stick shifter. If you put your hand on it when driving the freaking car had the clutch in. A real pain in the ass to drive. When I traded it in the mechanic said reverse was gone. He was holding on to the stick. Hated that car.

Nice car. Still don’t know what the problem some of you old guys (actually I’m quite a bit your senior) have with Super Beetles? Closest thing to a Beetle and they are old at this point. My 79 vert is a peach and drives great. We can’t all have Ovals J🙂

I have zero issues with seeing supers . I actually have seen many supers that talk to me …it’s when I get behind the wheel I simply cannot drive them . The extra width is felt and the front end while Looking through the windshield is crazy . Even in the roomy interior space is different while driving. It’s just a total different feeling from a standard Beetle

That’s so interesting. I have a 68 Ghia that I absolutely love to drive. That being said, in many ways my 79 SB is far superior. It is way better at hwy speeds, much more stable and you can actually drive it comfortably with a couple of other adults in it.
