My mother's parents were first cousins. It happened a lot because folks weren't nearly as mobile in those days and families and extended family were always together helping each other with planting and harvesting and all the heavy chores that required more than one person.

Please remind anyone cleaning a headstone old or new never to use a steel putty scraper or brushes with steel bristles.. that will damage the surface of the stone and wear down the letter cravings. I buy plastic putty scarpers at the dollar store 3/$2.50 and a soft toothbrush or vegetable cleaner with tampico bristles or nylon, never brushes with plastic.

If you clean headstones often, while D2 is great to use, have you tried Wet & Forget. Like D2, it is also recommended by the VA for cleaning veteran headstones. It can be obtained locally and is less expensive. I've been using it to clean headstones and it works great. Thanks for taking your time to show loving care toward your family.

I haven't tried that. Whenever I'm out of this batch of D2, I'll keep your recommendation in mind. Thank you!

Where can I buy Wet and Forget?
@rollingmeadowsnursery

can you use the wet and forget the same way because from what I read on it you have to let it set and do the work and make sure there is no rain chances for 4-5 Hours so makes me think you can't spray and scrub immediately...am I wrong?

@@rollingmeadowsnursery - when using Wet & Forget one should give it a dwell time like D2 before cleaning. If the lichen or moss is light, one can just, Wet & Forget it. How I use W&F to clean headstones. Heavy or light lichen/moss - I spray first with water, let sit a few minutes till the lichen/moss is Wet. This saves on the cleaning product (D2/Wet & Forget). Then I use a plastic scraper to remove the larger or built up lichen on the surface. Keep it wet till it's fairly cleaned off. _If you haven't figured out what to do with your old Ice Scraper that no longer scrapes off the ice... Now you do._ Use a file or sidewalk to put an edge back on it, they wear down fast and are cheap on sale or the dollar store. After that, or light moss - I spray with W&F and let it dwell for around 10 minutes. Then scrub with a nylon brush and rinse. For the lettering, I've found the round nylon pot scrubbing brush works best and round wooden toothpicks for the hard to reach spots. Once cleaned up, I rinse with water then a final spray with Wet & Forget. For the older white marble stones, I spray with W&F and let it dwell. Keeping it wet, I then use a soft nylon brush and lightly clean it, as even that will remove some surface from the stone, so scrub lightly. Rinse, then spray again with W&F.

Nice job. How long did you actually spend on the cleaning? I'm trying to get estimates for my own future projects.
@chiggerhavenhappenings9258
@chiggerhavenhappenings9258 Жыл бұрын
Less than an hour. You can spray it and walk away and let it do its own thing or if you want more immediate results you can spray it and let it sit for 20 minutes before scrubbing.

All families have such stories, I suppose. When I get downtime, I try and unravel my family's history as well. I suspect that my great-grandfather Eugene's brother Prentice was poisoned by his wife.

We've been extremely impressed with this cleaner. In fact we went back to this cemetery a couple weeks ago and the stone was bright white. Looked brand new. D2 keeps cleaning long after you're done.

I just cleaned my maternal grandparents' headstone. I used Dawn, water and a soft bristle brush. I had D2 with me but didn't have to use it. Any updates on your ancesters' headstone?

What if you used a drill brush? Wouldn’t that help?

I wouldn't advise that simply because it's too much abrasion in one spot in a short period of time. Think of this as meditative work. Take your time and think about the life and times of the individual who is buried there. Also, with D2 scrubbing isn't even required unless you want to see instant results. You can spray it and walk away and find months later that the D2 solution works on its own.
