In 2021, Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which included the biggest ever investment in Abandoned Mine Land reclamation.
Abandoned Mine Lands are areas that were mined prior to 1977 when no regulations existed to require clean-up. When a mining company decided to abandon a community, locals were left with damaged land and water pollution, including acid mine drainage.
Illinois now has a billion dollars to clean up these sites, protect our water, create jobs, and provide a major economic boost to communities abandoned by coal mines.
