The clinging, the unexpected loud clang if you don't put them in the right spot, the FLOATIES IN THE WATER, the feeling of my hands afterwards, cleaning out the drain stopper. It's the WORST. I want to thank you. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 5 and I have been struggling with clutter my whole life. I was always told I was lazy and that I just wasn't trying hard enough and that I needed to do better. My anxiety and depression hand been so bad that I am afraid to do anything wrong or even let my OCD clean boyfriend come over to my place when my room is a mess. I am just now starting to look for ways that I can keep clean and try not to be so self critical about not finishing a huge task like cleaning my trashed/cluttered room. In your words," I would always underreward my self." By doing it in little spirts and taking little brakes, I figuring out piles or areas that I can do and then I can take a small 5 minute brake and reward myself. Like eating a handful of gold fish or watching a few tiktoks. I found that writing down thing I need to do when they come to mind works really well then. Then if I have a big task I try to brake it down and in the morning I will select one big task and 2 or 3 small tasks that I can do that day. But I have taken common cleaning things( Cleaning the sink or shower, picking up my floor ect.) sorted them on a planner over the days of the week. So it just gets done over the week so it isn't overwhelming and will be alot easier for me to start. You have helped me so much on just getting my organization skills and life skills better so thank you 😊🙏☺ and God bless

1. Great content!! I've been unofficially diagnosed with ADHD recently (at 35). So thank you! 2. Constructive criticism: I'm sure your aware by now, but there was a noise throughout most of the video, which I'm pretty sure was your hair on your mic. It was a struggle for me to listen to your words without being distracted by the noise. I'd recommend keeping an eye on your mic in the future, and if possible, listen to clips of your recording periodically as you go. Otherwise, your sound quality was good, and the mic worked well. 3. I'm supposed to have a small get-together tomorrow, and it's now 9 am the previous day, and instead of doing what I was supposed to do, which is clean the house after basically living like a pig for months, I ended up watching tips on how to clean with excecutive dysfunction. I'm diagnosed with autism, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came with a little bit of ADHD, too, looking at my life. I was trying to clean yesterday, but after procrastinating for half the day, I stirred some of the piles of stuff that should be put away, realized my craft and art supplies are impossible to fit in the storage spaces I currently have, so I ended up browsing Ikea website to find the kind of bookshelf I'd need, and then got overwhelmed by the task at hand, so I took "a little break" painting a fairy painting (my special interest) for hours. I feel, regardless of how I decide to do things ahead of time to avoid the last minute panic, I always end up doing things too late, and at that time, I have to cut corners and never really get my home looking the way I'd like it to look. It all feels kinda hopeless.

I have ADD I hate boring things like cleaning and cooking. I can be talking on the phone and do so much cleaning and not even remember doing it because I was enjoying my talk while doing boring things and I didn't get bored or realize the boredom. I use Videos and music sometimes to keep my mind occupied when I have to do BORING things I want done but hate the boredom and overwhelmed feeling when doing it. I have to break up my work load. No more than an hour a day of cleaning. I set goals for each day and if they don't get done I'm not too hard on myself. Monday has its goal as every day of the week. Not saying I always meet my goals but I really do have to take breaks and push myself on those little goals I set for myself. I tell myself if this is not done now you will fail yourself and that bothers me and so I try not to focus on anything else and only get those goals done. I don't know how many times I'll be cleaning something and I get distracted by clutter or another task and never complete my cleaning list. I'll never be good at house keeping or staying up on everything but I am learning how to eliminate the boredom and to make sure everyday I have a reasonable goal set that never takes more than an hour after I get home from work. I hate cleaning and cooking but I love the satisfaction when I see my progress.

Don't fold your laundry. Buy pretty baskets. Throw it in it. 👍 If you hate some tasks, one way to get out of it is just finding another way of getting it done. I hate doing the dishes, and hope one day I'll get a dishwasher. But to cope until I get one, I start by forks and knives. Because it doesn't take much energy. Once it's done I can at least clean two bowls. When I finish I clean a plate too. Small goals. But I do not think about it at all, I do it naturally. If I start thinking about strategies to deal with cleaning it makes it even worse. I don't know why.

@@catherinedean3796 Awww! Thank you, Catherine! I needed that today. ❤️ I'm sorry that it's been 15 years and your mom is still struggling to understand. That must be really frustrating. I wonder if sending her a video like this might help so that she hears it from someone else besides you, ya know? Sometimes we can't hear things from the people closest to us bc it's so emotional. I don't know. Anyway, thank you for your kind comment. That was really nice.

I have been trying to clean my apartment FOR A YEAR. It always starts out so strong, I might get like *A* room clean, but as soon as I move on to the next room I either lose focus or interest, or I will get completely distracted with the most unimportant task. Like I meant to clean my kitchen and do my dishes but my garbage disposal broke so instead of putting in a maintenance request I spent FOUR HOURS looking up the model I have and how to fix it myself. I'll break my cleaning list down into steps like pick-up trash, sort laundry, at the very least get the floors cleared. The list just never gets finished and I do not get that serotonin boost when I cross something off. I want the whole list done, and I will not feel better until its done. But I cannot finish the damn list, ever. I HATE. My brain.

See I suffer with adhd, was on meds from 5 to 22, so my brain basically developed on it, But they cut me off then, I am 30 and really do not think anything is better and then I suffer with depression and it seems pretty bad but I kinda think its it's the brain, meds changing brain, and now nothing, I get help with insurance and where I live theirs 1 mental health place and they don't believe in controlled substances because people with addiction, mental issues, developmental learning problems, ect.. So I am really looking for real solutions because I don't wanna just be an adhd depressed hermit because I kinda feel like I'm not living, kinda just letting time pass by so thank you and also thanks for the website/blog recommendation.

This is the first time I've ever heard somebody talk about under rewarding with ADHD and I do this all the time and didn't realize it like even if I spend $5 on something I really needed I beat myself up over it being like did you really need that could you have gotten by without it what's wrong why are you wasting your money.

Out of all the cleaning issues I have, laundry has always been the worst. I can't think of a single time in my life when I've effectively done laundry, or kept on top of it. Why is it that I get more motivation with taking the rubbish out/doing the recycling? I don't do it super often, but I still do it *more* often... xD The worst part of laundry for me is putting the clothes away once they're dry. I live with my fiancee and our house is small, so we can't just put everything in one wardrobe/set of drawers. But we wash both our sets of clothes together. So the steps of sorting them out, taking them to the place they need to be put, *then* put them away is just... argh too much. Especially as I can't listen to music while I do it unless I put earphones on. Also, growing up as a musician and also with very highly ambitious parents, the idea of rewarding myself for every little thing is something I find hard to get behind due to internalised ableism I guess. It's this whole thing of, "You're expected to do it, so it shouldn't be rewarded." Only extra special stuff should be rewarded. I'm getting better but it's a battle of wits, definitely.
@Alliriyan2 жыл бұрын
Try drying the clothes on hangers so they can transfer straight to the wardrobe. Takes longer to hang up but you get the buzz of knowing it takes 3 seconds to put them away... Once you remember to.

@Stacymc20123 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your video! I'm going to be subscribing to your channel! I have a question though: with taking breaks: my problem is, I forget to get back on task or to finish cleaning. And part of it has to do with over-rewarding, but then when I do finish cleaning, I won't reward myself at all because I think, "You should be doing this every day", and I'm REALLY struggling with giving myself credit for doing things -- but that's a whole other story. Your timer technique when taking a break and making a list of short tasks are two techniques I will try! But how can I get motivated to finish tasks after a break?
@Galaxiebot3 жыл бұрын
I totally understand, this can be really hard! Honestly, for me, sometimes my motivation has to come from my end goal. I know that I will feel less anxious when my laundry is done and put away, or I will feel better when my dishes are done, but even that can be hard. Body doubling might be more effective in your situation, just having someone in the house with you to help keep your momentum really helps sometimes!

Lol yes the lists xD I do make lists but it helps my anxiety more than anything. I get overwhelmed by trying to remember this never ending list of things I have to do and can't rest. I've been making a quest board to hang and leave the lists hanging up on with rewards for finishing them, but its not gonna make me do em any faster. Just calm me down. I'm anxious af about all the stuff to do. Overwhelmed. Potentially burnt out considering the fatigue. But yeah doing the dishes (the reason I clicked on this video) is not gonna get done by putting it on a list. Its already on one. My daily morning routine. It's noon. Today is a struggle day for this executive dysfunction, or maybe it's the fatigue, who knows? I'm still watching the video. Just got to 5:07. I'm looking forward to seeing a potential solution. I hate laundry and dishes so much!!

I write and rewrite list so I dont have to hyperfocus ....but then sometimes i hyperfocus on list! As a young kid(8-9?) mom said pack your stuff for vacation( camping) if you forget something it's on you...I made my first list and at the bottom I listed myself! Now as adult(64) - 3 months before I leave on yrly trip I start list pare it down rewrite it ever couple weeks or less...its mentally exhausting but I never forget anything but don't use list to make sure everything gets home go figure. When they told me in the 70s your dyslexic they didn't know about ADHD 20 yrs later talked to doc that told me I had it said they goes hand and hand...so I'm . A list maker may not be able to always find my list but that's OK I will make another one....sigh*
@Galaxiebot3 жыл бұрын
What's very funny about this is that the exact same thing happened to me in the 90s 😅 My parents and teachers fully knew about my dyslexia but I didn't find out until 20 years later that I found out it tends to go hand-in-hand with ADHD. Funny how some things never change.
