You are a total gem! I cannot tell you how happy you've made me. I bought brand new velvet sofas for a newly renovated house I moved into a few weeks ago. But I also offered to look after a dog for relatives who were in a last minute bind finding dog care a few days before their holiday. The adorable, but naughty, dog climbed the sofas and slobbered on them. I asked a really highly rated professional cleaning company to take a look and they declined the job because of the velvet. My next stop was you and after 3 solid hours of carefully following your step-by-step guide, they're back to new!! I genuinely can't thank you enough.

I started immediately, I did 2 settees and a chair and they’ve come up fantastic. They were so grubby, dull and the velvet had gone flat that I was on for buying new furniture. Your advise has brought it all back to life, the colour has come back and the velvet has lifted. I was really surprised how little washing up liquid you need to get a great result easily , also it dried really quickly.I only used washing up liquid and water. As you say, too much detergent is too much froth and so too much stays in the velvet weighing it down and you can’t get it out.... that was the problem I had before seeing your video , I was using too much soap, too much water and too much rubbing and knocking the life out of the velvet. Be careful doing this as if there are any dyes in the wax they can migrate into the fibers when the wax melts - scrape up as much as you can with a blunt knife and test a small area with the iron and paper towel. It may be safer to try removing the wax with rubbing alcohol.

Will White vinegar substitute for rubbing alcohol?
@CleaningHowTo4 жыл бұрын
White vinegar treats a different soil spectrum than rubbing alcohol which is a solvent - acids can also reveal dye issues especially in cottons and indicator dyes, so stick with the rubbing alcohol if possible!

Another question is can I take the sofa covers off that are urine and ink stained and turn inside out and put on gentle cycle of wash machine?
@CleaningHowTo4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you need to call a pro in. There’s too many variables here to put a protocol together without an inspection. I’d not recommend putting velvet in a washing machine - though some synthetic velvets may tolerate it. Watch my dry cleaning and ink removal videos for grooming and ink removal advice :)

What about hard snot stains on my velvet couch? My dog always sneezes and his snot gets splattered 🤢 I tried scraping/removing with butter knife, it didn’t help. Of course, I tried it while it was dry. I didn’t make this cleaning solution because idk if that would help, snot is really hard and crusty.
@CleaningHowTo3 жыл бұрын
Test it with the cleaning solution - you may need to moisten them and scrape off with the knife.

can I ask a question I have a green velvet sofa 100% Polyester it says from riess ambiente. My child puked on it because of her condition. it's very hard to get all that cover fabric off since it's knotet on the underside of the upholstery. It's a beautiful emerald green color I don't want to ruin but baby puke is also so intense. I tried on small spots with a little water, baby wipes, bile soap and patted it dry. but those bigger stains are not really good to clean that way. also I wonder is it possible to buy a washing vacuum cleaner?
@CleaningHowTo7 ай бұрын
I’d probably call a pro to rinse it; if you don’t know how to rinse velvet you can damage the pile.

Does rubbing with brush damage your softness of velvet?? When I runnbed with brush I felt like that
@CleaningHowTo3 жыл бұрын
It shouldnt cause any damage no! Never scrub velvet as it can burst the pile, but grooming/rubbing should be fine!

Hi there! Is it a bad idea to use a bissell cleaner to remove soiling if it’s dried after with a hairdryer as you’ve done here? The arms of my velvet couch are very stained from my dog 😢
@CleaningHowTo2 жыл бұрын
Do it in the direction of the pile only; as in the way it glides without resistance across the pile. Towel in the same direction, then groom in the same direction - when dry it can be brushed. Velvet is about grooming more than anything

I have a vintage velvet bandeau hat that I’d like to clean... it’s velvet over wire. Do you think this solution would still be a good choice for that or should I use something that’s formulated for cleaning upholstery? I’m concerned about introducing water to the situation and having rust stains form. Thanks!
@CleaningHowTo4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I'd opt for the dry cleaning method I outline in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYmwm31_m9OgY7M that way theres zero risk of rust - with a wire frame piece I'd be extra careful not to apply pressure on the frame points as the velvet might get compressed - I'd love to hear how you get on!

Are you cleaning & drying against or with the pile?
@CleaningHowTo3 жыл бұрын
I didn't differentiate in this instance but if theres a lot of resistance going against the pile its probably best to go with. Every fibre is a bit different.

Useful information, many thanks. Do you have any tips for restoring the pile on the arm of my sofa? Its only a couple of months old and it was very very expensive. I spilt a couple of drops of tea on it last night. I gently blotted it, used my hairdryer and a soft silicone brush to restore the pile, but it still has a lighter cast than the surrounding velvet, what can I try?
@CleaningHowTo4 жыл бұрын
Fiona Siegertsz is there any labelling? If so what is the fiber type?
@ginnympersson41764 жыл бұрын
Velvet has a nap which makes cloth appear shiny when brushed in one direction , "velvety" in the other direction. try different directions and note which will make it blend in.
