That's why we don't have a warp drive. Someone travelled back through the time and detonated some Omega molecules. And now, we don't have a subspace in our solar system. We will never meet the Borg. It's so sad.

We all know that Voyager's Season 4 is among the best, if not *THE BEST* season in the entire Star Trek Canon, but the Omega Directive is the most underrated episode ever. This episode was worthy of at least 2 hours, or even a movie about it, it's simply one of the most intriguing episode ever, I really wish we had more of it
@williammerkel1410
@williammerkel1410 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I would add season 5 to the list as well, if for no other reason than that introduced the Captain Proton holodeck program, which was absolutely amazing whenever it appeared. To me the best seasons are seasons four and five of Deep Space Nine, also four and five of Voyager, and two and three of Enterprise ( personally I love Star Trek most when it focuses around a single story line for a long period of time, that is why I never got very invested into the original series or next generation, way too episodic, you could miss 80% of the episodes and still understand everything, but with Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise a much larger chunk of the series is vital to understanding what is happening).

Intriguing analysis. At first watch I enjoyed it but felt a bit cumbersome in it's approach. Omega was almighty for sure but the episode felt rushed and almost insignificant in light of the magnitude of the event. You're right about a lengthier storyline. It definitely deserved at least 2 hours or more.
@ShadowMage3D
@ShadowMage3D 5 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that the least Janeway could have done for those people was provide them with an alternative technology to solve their energy problems. The PD was rescinded for the duration anyway, and she basically left them to die in a solar system completely cut off from subspace travel.
@NATIK001
@NATIK001 5 ай бұрын
Honestly their knowledge of Omega was too dangerous to let them leave, and no technology she could give would make up for their resources running out any way. It's harsh but the best outcome for everyone else is that this species die out in their self-made isolation zone. Maybe if this had occurred near or inside Federation space some way could be devised to save them, but Voyager had no means to do anything but safeguard the quadrant from the folly of this pre-warp civilization.

The same thing that would happen any other time a Captain died or wasn't around, the command functions would be transferred to the next officer. But question would be if the directive would still alert the Captain if that Captain wasn't the original and was someone without the clearance. Based on how dangerous this is that the subroutines about it would probably still work for whoever the new Captain was.

B’elanna is chief of engineering... when the force field went up and the high security top secret computer systems were engaged... that requires energy power and security system lock outs to rearrange their configuration... if she was the only person who was at the work station... the ship was feeding her rumors. If some one unqualified was standing there... they would not have known what happened or even that anything out of the ordinary happened... knowledge is power... and engineering is energy knowledge as well as understanding.

Something occurred to me on this: I was curious what extent Captains are briefed on Omega. I think there was something said that it applied to starship captains and above - so were captains of lesser vessels - small scouts, research vessels not assigned to deep space, supply vessels, etc, not included on that? There does seem to be cause for distinction here given commentary from past episodes that actively distinguish those vessel types.

Sad thing is, it's never really discussed that much, but in the Star Trek canon, book wise at least, there's actually a level above lvl 10, Level 11....in the event of first contact with a malevolent omnipotent being, Q doesnt count, he's annoying at best and self-serving at worst, StarFleet is to immediately activate the Z Directive.....which was never explained, but was apparently some deus ex machina that would allow Star Fleet to very temporarily alter the laws of physics, to something akin to a Q level, but only to very specific circumstances, and only for a very brief amount of time, possibly 10 seconds or less.

@Tantalus010
@Tantalus010 4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it did. Starfleet ship computers are smart enough to reason with, so as soon as the ship was informed (or realized) that the captain was dead or incapacitated, I'm sure the computer would tell the acting captain to report to the ready room for a classified brief.
@svavarkjarrval8757
@svavarkjarrval8757 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tantalus010 There are pros and cons in that regard because such reports or situations could be faked, therefore briefing someone who wasn't supposed to know. Perhaps the computer, if it detects such a possibility, would automatically inform the closest Starfleet entity (ship, station, communication node, etc.) of the uncertainty, and Starfleet would dispatch another ship to verify. Of course, this is all speculation.

Janeway1153red. That password is horrible even by today's standards. Janeway is just her name. 1153 is four digits. It's not a lot. And while "red" has three letters it's just a color, and should probably be counted as only 1 character. There's also standard formatting, which if you knew would make this easier. It's (Name) (String of numbers) (Up to three letters or color) Name is always first, the others are sometimes swapped. It would take a modern computer seconds to break that code, and if somehow there were any kind of listening device they could get both the voice print and code. Without even needing to brute force it.

It fudges the criticality of preventing damage to subspace by the apparency of Star Trek not existing at all in a region of space where space travel is effectively rendered pointless. The conceit is that the ability of man to explore space is what's necessary for a society's progress and ultimate survival as a culture. Sometimes the line blurring the love of a show and its application in real world is just best left in the show.

An interesting episode, an incompetent Captain over promoted and waaaay out of her depth pushed into a situation with a Starfleet directive that rescinds all other considerations and she can't consult her superiors. That the rest of the crew were able to pull them out of a lethal mess regardless of Janeway speaks volumes.

So cringy. She's like a 10 year old trying to sound dramatic. X) Half expected "Over 9000" to pop up. And Chakofail's "make it possible" is almost as bad. Then there's Belana's pocket protector. /facepalm

B'Elanna's smock was a poor attempt to try and hide the fact actress Roxann Dawson was pregnant at the time.

I see. There's an in-universe problem here too though that goes back to the federation's loathing of all things related to improvement. Comparing the uniform of ent with tng and the like shows zero pockets. It's like they don't want people to carry around tools unless they serve to reinforce hatred of them, like those stupid stick on phaser and tricorder pockets.

Brandon Sergent Agreed, though Doctor Crusher always wore that comfy medical coat with at least 2 pockets

She gets special treatment because Picard had a crush. You think they named her "Crusher" by accident? X)
