We all know that Voyager's Season 4 is among the best, if not *THE BEST* season in the entire Star Trek Canon, but the Omega Directive is the most underrated episode ever. This episode was worthy of at least 2 hours, or even a movie about it, it's simply one of the most intriguing episode ever, I really wish we had more of it
@williammerkel14104 жыл бұрын
Personally I would add season 5 to the list as well, if for no other reason than that introduced the Captain Proton holodeck program, which was absolutely amazing whenever it appeared. To me the best seasons are seasons four and five of Deep Space Nine, also four and five of Voyager, and two and three of Enterprise ( personally I love Star Trek most when it focuses around a single story line for a long period of time, that is why I never got very invested into the original series or next generation, way too episodic, you could miss 80% of the episodes and still understand everything, but with Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise a much larger chunk of the series is vital to understanding what is happening).

Intriguing analysis. At first watch I enjoyed it but felt a bit cumbersome in it's approach. Omega was almighty for sure but the episode felt rushed and almost insignificant in light of the magnitude of the event. You're right about a lengthier storyline. It definitely deserved at least 2 hours or more.
@ShadowMage3D5 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that the least Janeway could have done for those people was provide them with an alternative technology to solve their energy problems. The PD was rescinded for the duration anyway, and she basically left them to die in a solar system completely cut off from subspace travel.
@NATIK0015 ай бұрын
Honestly their knowledge of Omega was too dangerous to let them leave, and no technology she could give would make up for their resources running out any way. It's harsh but the best outcome for everyone else is that this species die out in their self-made isolation zone. Maybe if this had occurred near or inside Federation space some way could be devised to save them, but Voyager had no means to do anything but safeguard the quadrant from the folly of this pre-warp civilization.

The same thing that would happen any other time a Captain died or wasn't around, the command functions would be transferred to the next officer. Something occurred to me on this: I was curious what extent Captains are briefed on Omega. I think there was something said that it applied to starship captains and above - so were captains of lesser vessels - small scouts, research vessels not assigned to deep space, supply vessels, etc, not included on that? There does seem to be cause for distinction here given commentary from past episodes that actively distinguish those vessel types.

Sad thing is, it's never really discussed that much, but in the Star Trek canon, book wise at least, there's actually a level above lvl 10, Level 11....in the event of first contact with a malevolent omnipotent being, Q doesnt count, he's annoying at best and self-serving at worst, StarFleet is to immediately activate the Z Directive.....which was never explained, but was apparently some deus ex machina that would allow Star Fleet to very temporarily alter the laws of physics, to something akin to a Q level, but only to very specific circumstances, and only for a very brief amount of time, possibly 10 seconds or less.

I wonder if the protocol deals with situations where the captain dies, goes into coma, etc... and then an Omega molecule is detected when there's an unbriefed first officer as acting captain.
@Tantalus0104 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it did. Starfleet ship computers are smart enough to reason with, so as soon as the ship was informed (or realized) that the captain was dead or incapacitated, I'm sure the computer would tell the acting captain to report to the ready room for a classified brief.
@svavarkjarrval87574 жыл бұрын
@@Tantalus010 There are pros and cons in that regard because such reports or situations could be faked, therefore briefing someone who wasn't supposed to know. Perhaps the computer, if it detects such a possibility, would automatically inform the closest Starfleet entity (ship, station, communication node, etc.) of the uncertainty, and Starfleet would dispatch another ship to verify. Of course, this is all speculation.
@dhinton13 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it would for Starfleet vessels within reasonable range of contacting HQ, or any Federation starbase. like it was stated in this episode, the directive wasn't meant for a lone starship over 60K light years from any semblance of the Federation.

Janeway1153red. That password is horrible even by today's standards. Janeway is just her name. 1153 is four digits. It's not a lot. And while "red" has three letters it's just a color, and should probably be counted as only 1 character. There's also standard formatting, which if you knew would make this easier. It's (Name) (String of numbers) (Up to three letters or color) Name is always first, the others are sometimes swapped. It would take a modern computer seconds to break that code, and if somehow there were any kind of listening device they could get both the voice print and code. Without even needing to brute force it.
