The Last Stop in Yuma County is so damn good! You Coen Brothers/Tarantino reference is the perfect description of the film. Excited to see more from writer/director Francis Galluppi. Also glad to know that Heretic did decent box office ($51M) against its $10M budget.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m hoping that your return to work, and even reviewing a film that deals with loss and grief is a good sign. I was intrigued by your critique of FLOW. You clearly know more about computer animation than I do: I just assumed that the softness/low resolution of the animals was an aesthetic choice. I loved that film unreservedly, wept several times during it, and have enthusiastically recommended it to all of my friends. It has a delicacy and a kindness that I really needed.

I think the limitations bothered me at first but improved as the film went on. Part of it is also that I become so involved in the story, which I loved. Thank you for your kind thoughts as well.

@@ClearCritiqueI also wanted to echo your comment about the resonance between this film and the world of ICO/SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS! I lost my little brother when he was 21, in 1998. I was 23. In 27 years, I've learned to live around it, but it never goes away. It hasn't gotten easier, I've just become jaded to most things. Most things, but not him. He's the only person that can bring tears to my eyes in an instant, or can make me laugh out of nowhere. Even in my profile picture here, I'm wearing his old Pearl Jam shirt. Eventually you realize you wouldn't want it to get easier. The best people are worth our pain, and they'll remain that way. I'll hold onto it.

@ClearCritique Absolutely. I really wouldn't wish what we have to live with on anyone. It's especially hard watching your parents suffer. I think sometimes it feels easier, but something comes and rips the band-aid off and you're back in those fresh moments. Take care. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Very sorry to hear about your sister. I can't imagine what that must be like. Hang in there and hold tight the things you love most in the weeks and months to come. Interesting picks as always. I still need to watch 'Love Lies Bleeding'. I saw 'Flow' in the theatre and liked it quite a bit, almost reminding me of a mixture of Daniel P. Mannix and Mamoru Oshii's 'Angel's Egg' with lots of beautiful observational detail and subtext and even a dash of spec zoo. I would say, however, that in my personal opinion it wasn't quite the best animated movie from 2024, nor the most underrated. For me, that title (along with the title of most underrated movie of the year in general) goes to Mari Okada's most recent directorial feature 'Maboroshi' (or 'Alice and Therese's Illusion Factory', to use the direct translation of its Japanese title). I'd highly recommend it, though I would give the caveat that it's not a movie that's properly understood unless you watch it at least twice; there's so much thematic layering and 'showing-not-telling' explanation of all the weird mysteries contained within the very complicated set-up which is informed by so many little details and idiosyncrasies that makes it worth thirty explainer vids......yet weirdly I've almost nobody even acknowledge that the movie exists. It's not quite on the same level as Okada's emotionally devastating masterpiece directorial debut 'Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms' (itself by far one of the most underrated movies of the 2010's decade), but it's genuinely original (on a tonal level almost like a simultaneously edgy and cerebral mix of 'Donnie Darko', HBO's 'The Leftovers', and Alex Garland if I had to compare it to something), visually gorgeous, and has my favourite original song from a movie for 2024 with Miyuki Nakajima's 'Shin-on'. Also criminally underrated and under-discussed: 'Out of Darkness' was a superb prehistoric horror with amazing cinematography and a really sobering reminder of the violence our species has committed against other human species, 'The New Boy' is a haunting and suis-generis meditation on the complicated legacy of colonialism and the internalized trauma of childhood with my absolute favourite Cate Blachett performance, 'The Beast' is like if Emily St. John Mandel and Thomas M. Disch collaborated on a Black Mirror episode, and 'The Devil's Bath' is beaten only by 'The Substance' and 'Nosferatu' as the best horror of the year.

Look, I have no problems with horror movies and religion, I just would like to see someone somewhere start to take on all the available drama and horror from all the fundamentalism stemming from Islam. Heck, even Hinduism has allowed itself to be delved into via "It Lives Inside", which was a fantastic and well-paced movie with some pretty decent acting throughout. Why everyone in Hollywood is so afraid to take on Islam as a topic for comedy or horror is beyond me.
@Magdalena8008s
@Magdalena8008s 21 күн бұрын
Dude. Its not that complicated. The reason why American filmmakers haven't made much of Islam is they were raised in a predominantly Christian place. It's what they know. Its not that people are afraid of Islam. Sure, some might. That's the case with everthing though. Point is, the reason its not "attacked" as much is because writers write from experience and what they know. And what their trauma may stem from. And its not Islam. And heres the kicker. The films you're talking about exist. They are made by people in more predominantly Islamic countries or former members or so. Four Lions is an example I've seen. You can Google this yourself. There's Reddit threads and other things with a massive list of films covering such. In conclusion. Its not that only Christianity is under attack like some like to make it seem. Its that this country is 66% Christian I believe now. And when its the majority, that's what happens. People write what they know.

I really wanted to like Flow. I did not understand it. The animation was crap. Honestly, it was crap. When I watch Arcane, or Castlevania, or Blue Eyed Samurai, all better. All better stories, all better animation, and more meaningful. And what planet was this on? That was not a great big whale, it was some other monster. The characters were cliche and there really was no point to it. I mean, a cat that chases a light spot? Wow, so original.
