Jon Boone is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a recent transplant to the Flathead Valley of Montana. Originally from Canada, he emigrated to the United States, found BJJ and dove in headfirst, eventually opening his own academy. Like many affected by the pandemic, he is re-inventing himself with his love for French cuisine with his company Salt and Butter.
Travis Davison is the vice president of Straight Blast Gym International, the owner of multiple SBG facilities, and a 20 + year BJJ practitioner as well as my coach.
For those that think that these episodes are only about Jiu-Jitsu, you could not be more mistaken. Often times we talk more about life than anything that happens on the mat.
Enjoy

The discussion about relaxing during rolling (51:07) rather than constantly going 100% is spot on. Thanks for bringing that up.

On people’s eating habits, yes there’s a lot of bad decisions. But, it’s also true that eating healthy can be expensive and urban fresh food deserts are a real thing.

I did a similar thing with my youth football team. When energy was low, I'd tell them to circle it up. Then I'd tell one player to hit the circle. Then they call out who they wanted. The object was to drive the opponent out of the circle

We are doing positional sparring every practice, regardless what color belt you are. I expect nothing else. 30 mins learning a new move, 30 mins positional grappling, stand-up or whatever the partners want.

My gym does positional sparring right after we learn the days' techniques. We call is situational training. It is some of my favorite work because you are learning to use the exact technique you just learned. I also appreciate Jon's point about slowing down. I am a two stripe white belt and that makes so much sense. I wear myself out too quick when rolling so I am going to try to slow things down. Great podcast!

So I know this has been answered before but the audio in the beginning where the JTAC is calling in the air strike, is there a way to hear the full audio or where did it come from?

I really enjoy these podcasts and find them so valuable, but it's a bit grating to hear advice about exercise from people who can take 2 hours to roll multiple times a week. I eat well and am in decent shape but between work, kids and keeping a household afloat, I'm lucky if I get to talk the dog for 20 minutes after everyone's in bed. People will say you make time if it's important, but to those I say there are literally no more hours in the day for me, 6 days a week. So I eat well and occasionally fast to keep my weight down, but the hand-waving about exercise does wear thin.

@@JesusChrist2000BC I do that. I'm referring to a proper session. I don't get the level of sweat and exhaustion I need in 20 minutes, nor do I have the subsequent half hour needed to clean up.

Street fight is still more effective than any marshal art in its purity. I've never seen two dudes rolling on the ground doing JJ in the street fight. Usually, it is bunch of punches in a head or whatever. no time to think there, adrenalin takes over, and surviving primal instinct.

25:40 365 days off the matt isn't only gonna stop your progression. But I don't think there's any recovery from that for a 19 year old student. Losing momentum at that age is disasterous not matter what you are pursuing. A year of lockdown can can ruin a teenager's entire career/life
