Key here is to overcome the feeling of looking awkward when trying to shift from what we get used to , this is very true if we have been reading a certain sound wrongly for over years and always our mind snap back to our comfort zone.

Hey there, which is the difference of the tongue position of the AH /ɑ/ vs dark L (only in the part 1, not in the part 2 that is when you up the tongue tip), in both the tongue is lower in the back presses down and I the front touching the bottom front teeth? The only difference I feel is that the jaw drops more on the /ɑ/, but I feel that the position of the tongue does not change. Thanks

Could you please explain the "Low back merger" (where /ɔ/ and maybe /ɒ/ become /ɑ/) and the "Weak vowel merger" (where unstressed /ɪ/ and maybe /ʊ/ become /ə/)? I'm learning to pronounce words in American English (in general), so I focus on the most standard/common pronunciations, but it's very difficult to know what they are; various dictionaries differ from each other and I think the main conflicts are based on these two mergers, the rest is usually consistent. So far my understanding is that in General American English (or Standard American English) people pronounce /ɑ/ instead of /ɔ/ (and they use /ɔ/ only in /ɔɪ/ and /ɔɹ/), and that /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ in unstressed syllables should be pronounced as /ə/, but I really don't know.

Oh wow keenyn you upload videos once in a blue moon😅. No worries i just try to remember that phrase😄. And many thanks for this lesson. Anyway i'd like to mention that i can pronounce words better much better when i read a text than when i am just speaking in English. I don't know why but i think it's because when i read a text i can see the words how they are written or maybe when i read my brain has only to focus on pronouncing the words correctly while when talking i have to focus on words pronunciation and also English itself so talking is much more work for the brain😄. So i read a lot hope it's gonna help me get better. Anyway i am now a lot better than a month ago thanks to you and some other teachers on youtube🙂. Oh btw i don't live in any English speaking country but i always liked to learn it so i watch a lot of american shows and recently i've noticed i can understand like 95% of what they are saying🥰.
@ClearEnglishCorner5 жыл бұрын
😄😄 Perfect use of once in a Blue Moon! My upload schedule is every other Tuesday right now. I would love to upload every week but I have found, since I am doing this completely on my own at this point, I have to let that go for now as I would go a bit bonkers trying to get a good video out each week, run my business, be a mama, a wife, a friend , a daughter and all that good stuff! 😄 That totally makes sense about the reading. Do you ever find it tricky though, since English letters so often do not equal English sounds? The written words messes us up so often because of this! I am so happy you are noticing and celebrating your progress! I have mush admiration for you and I'm honored to be part of your learning journey!

awesome... but, Keenyn, will you kindly explain what is the difference between [a] sound and [a:] sound, as well as [i] [i:], [ɜ] [ɜ:], [ɔ] [ɔ:], [u] [u:] - is there any chance I can leave out the colon, since my suspicion is that it is purely British phonetic sounds. And then there is this overturned a - [ɒ] . I am using IPA which has a whole bunch of sounds which I don't come across when look on the Am.English transcription. 0_o and then all these diphthongs... which also differ.
