Clearing Out Algae with Goldfish

Cattle need clean water. And algae has been a big issue for my water troughs. I have attempted various chemical treatments but nothing has worked. Next I'll try fish. I'll see if goldfish and algae eaters will keep the water troughs clean.

🤔🤔🤔 As a 30+ year aquarist and someone who once worked ranch I can assure you that neither goldfish nor algae eaters will take care of your algae issue. Goldfish will eat duckweed they will only add to the algae issues by providing the algae with additional nitrogen and ammonia to thrive on. Algae eaters only eat certain types of algae as fry. They soon move on to a omnivorous diet dependent upon the species. Some eat wood, some eat plants others eat meat/ fish. Most will eat the eggs / spawn of other fish. The water is like that because it’s stagnant. You need to empty the troughs, scrub them, rinse them then fill them back up. Install a small pump and a algae scrubbing light in the tanks. You can also use small bales of Barley straw to kill the algae. And if the cows drink too much of the algae water it will kill them. Side note: it’s a federal offense to release goldfish and algae eaters ( armored catfish, pleco ) into any body of water because they are highly invasive and destroy endemic fish populations by eat the spawns and destroying breeding sights. Just put them in a large fish tank and keep them as pets 🤷🏽‍♂️ or give them to someone who will take proper care of them who has a large aquarium,

I know from experience, unfortunately gold fish does nothing for algae. I am still having issues with a 300 gallon "pond" full of algae and wish I could dump it and restart, however the gold fish, cat fish and kio will not be happy.

You can use "mosquito eaters" or regular guppies to keep the mosquito larva and other insects at bay. Where I live you can get Mosquito eaters from the Farm Agency.

I think it might be a good idea to skim off the algae "islands" floating in the tanks. When that algae dies, the decomposition process sucks oxygen out of the water and the goldfish NEED oxygen. It seems that even with those "islands" skimmed off there will still be plenty of algae for the goldfish. Some AQUATIC fresh water aquarium (not terrestrial) snails will clean up algae and goldfish poop.

Gold Fish have been used in England for cleaning water troughs fir hotses and cattle for a very long time

Idk friend, have you ever had a goldfish tank? They don't clean the algae. They help make the tank dirty. 😂😂😂The humans in my house would have to clean the algae and the muck. May you have a better try with the algae eater.🎉🎉🎉

I used to have goldfish in all my troughs - great for keeping the mosquito larvae down... I don't recall if they did much for the alge, but the water certainly wasn't green.

It's just an algae mat. It's fine and won't hurt the cows. If it was red algae it would be a worry but that's just growing because of all the nutrients in the water. The fish will clear it up but it's the same water.

I was expecting the goldfish or the algae eaters to clean it out. I suspect it wont hurt the cows. Cattle have billions of bacteria in the rumen.
