Curious what became of the carp? We have grass carp around here in Ga in some of the lakes but they are all sterile because they breed like fleas I gather. They eat lots of weeds though and grow fast. I have a blast catching plenty of them between 15 and 30 lbs. They have to be released but that's fine by me.

This is a follow the recommendations moment - if one is good, 20 isn't better. You do have to be careful with the quantity released but, yeah, no more weeds.

I always knew there was a natural way of controlling plant growth in ponds, thank you for sharing, and looking forward to May 2017 for the results.

You can do it with chemicals to but i am not going to do that. This is the best natural way to do it. Now i have a nice balanced eco system.

When he said they get as big as your leg he wasn't joking. After 20 years ours where absolutely huge and they never reproduced but, they really kept the weeds under control.

Watching your video about the grass carp I noticed what looks like an aerator on both sides of your dock. We are thinking about fountains to keep the water moving. What do you suggest? Also your pond is so clear. How do you get it so clear? Is it spring fed? Ours is not. There is a creek that feeds it when it rains then there’s an overflow on the other side.

Hi, I am wondering if you did an update video on the Grass Carp and how they worked out. I am very interested to know. Thanks! I love your Chanel!

Jeff, what is the maximun voltage of the freedom if it was theoretically not attached to a battery bank? I wish to hook up to a grid tie, when the grid is up, then switch back to batteries when the grid is down.

Do you think the pumps putting oxygen into the water whilst helping the fish may also encourage the weed development. I have a idea if you can pump the water around from one side say in a two inch pipe to the other this may help the pound from stagnating up with the weed but also help the wild life?

The pond aeration causes bacteria to grow in the water which eats up junk on the pond floor. Aeration does cause plants to grow and makes for healthy fish BUT, Hornwart needs no aeration at all to take over ponds and lakes. Hornwart is banned in a lot of counties because of it's invasive nature. I have seen large lakes completely over run with it, no aeration at all. We should have had Grass Carp in the pond a year ago and this would not have gotten so bad. The Carp will grow too a weight of 100 pounds . They are from Asia.They must be controlled and thinned out or they will eat everything in the pond down to a big mud hole.

Grass Carp are highly regulated in Texas... you have to apply for a license to buy them from the state fisheries and I believe you can only buy males...

Any updates on your pond? Hopefully the pond is clear of weeds by now and you have some fat fish, haha.
@MissouriWindandSolar5 жыл бұрын
Yup. Filled the pond with Grass Carp and the weeds are gone.

Are those carp native to the US? If not hopefully nobody stocks them to a water body that can through high water allow them to get into any river system.
@MissouriWindandSolar8 жыл бұрын
No they are not. They are Asian Minnow Carp i believe is the correct name. They don't reproduce in ponds and lakes at all, just rivers. The state has released them into the Illinois river and they actually cleaned up the river well enough that people are swimming in it. They are in a lot of lakes and ponds for weed control.

MissouriWindandSolar As long as their not the invasive type that are being found in the Great Lakes. Those ones can destroy the existing fisheries and ecosystems.

That sucks. I hope this works. From what i have read from the state of Missouri it should. The thing is i let it get out of control instead of getting the Carp in a year ago which might have kept the weeds under control. The state has a guide to go by for the amount of Grass Carp to put in one acre according to the weed percentage in your pond. 60 percent covered they recommend 10 to 20 per acre.

I thought the aerator takes out the weeds?

Just put a manatee in there and the pond will be cleaned in a day or so. if you don't have access to a local supplier of manatees there, then you should add a couple koi to the pond also. they will also eat the plants and are a little more colorful than the grass carp.

wouldn't feeding the fish be counter productive to ridding horn wort.
