Clearing the spillway for a BIG RAIN Event!

The spillway had a lot of debris built up and knowing a big rain was on the way, I tried to save the pond from washing out the dam and the spillway. I think it helped but it was just too much rain at once!

2nd spill way but perhaps higher than that one so it can act as a back up in case the main gets clogged overnight

I was thinking just a bridge, keep the pond (lake?) a little lower, so a few inches doesn’t have it overtopping. I’m not sure where you’re from, but around here three inches is just a solid storm. I’m thinking just cut open the spillway area, build some boxes, fill Em with cement. Just a tidy little opening, maybe 4’ by 4’, 1 foot walls, one foot road. I’m not an engineer, any engineers out there know if that’s a sound plan for a small bridge? (Edit) Oh, it has the added benefit of being less likely to clog.

From what you have shown us, you've got 2 options here. Either: 1) Install a bigger culvert pipe to move move water within the same time frame or 2) Take it out and install it/a new one a foot or two lower, giving the dam a lower water level, leaving space for the excess water that doesn't clear quick enough Both options will help reduce the likelihood of the dam overflowing and flooding. Hope this helps

I suggest a overflow pipe and a manual release gate. When the rain is coming you can predrain the lake
@DocNo27
@DocNo27 3 жыл бұрын
@@callumjohnson9433 You don't even need a manual release gate - you can use a siphon to drain the pond down (not a bad idea if you know a big storm is coming)
@callumjohnson9433
@callumjohnson9433 3 жыл бұрын
@@DocNo27 siphon would work but they have limitations. If say you put in a release gate with a max exit of 12x12 inches. You could just set it too 12x1 inch or anywhere in between. You would have full control in most situations. Depending on the lake size you can taylor the gate to suit the size

If you put a 'bell mouth' on the culvert inlet, it would flow a lot better. You are loosing a pile of capacity, by having the hard corners of the pipe exposed.

She says she just enjoys watching them & gathering the eggs.

You should put a few boulders up in front of the culvert, so such huge branches don't clog it up and make it easier to remove them. ideally also put another culvert in. that one is to too small if you get such rainfall often in that area.

You need to make a over flow area. A area that is lower than the rest of the damn except the drain tube and is planted with grass to allow water to gently flow over the top in a prescribed area and flow across grass into the woods and then meet the creek as you want.

Looking at all the damage there is two ways to fix this you can add a second culvert pipe and the pipes should be lower in the ground and then on the other side where all the erosion is because I can see at the end of the culvert pipe it has even broken off all of that needs to be filled back in and I believe they use a commercial liner and then rip rap rocks you install at the end and normally in the beginning it really helps with erosion control
@user-tb2jy9lu3d

That culvert pipe needs to be 3 times that size to accommodate all of that water. To avoid erosion, it would need some large boulders underneath.

You should really add in another Culvert or 2. even if smaller size. it would help alot. Also could drain the water down abit. Also, lowering a section down by the spill way by half a foot, then perhaps laying down a concrete pad over it thens 3 or 4 inchs thick. so you really have like a 2 inch lowered spot over all. might help keep contained and going else where dont want it to go to.
