Putting both hands on the wheel was one of the first educations in my driving lessons - in Germany its not allowed to steer a car with one hand (except you have to switch the gear). My driving instructor always told us: "Imagine a clock. Your hand should be at nine and three o'clock."

@@DanySahne85 In Belgium it is "allowed", just not during the exam. The same clock reference is made. However, in the north, Flanders, there's a mandatory session after 6-9 months of having received your license (since it's during that period new drivers start getting comfortable and thus begin taking more risks; it always involves a group talking session and during mine I remember someone talking about having committed a hit and run after hitting a bollard, which would've cost him his license if caught). During the session, certain risky situations are simulated (drunk driving, emergency braking, taking turns at a relatively high speed and aquaplaning). Some of them (the last 2) illustrate the importance of having both hands on your steering wheel. A lot of people aren't really happy with this extra session (despite it being very informative and generally quite fun), since it's, well, mandatory and quite costly at just over €120 (with some potentially very harsh fines if you don't show up, up to €4000). It's also dangerous to put your hand on top of your steering wheel - something which admittedly is extremely comfortable - since, if your airbag is deployed, there's a good chance your arm/hand will hit your face at a pretty high speed (airbags open at speeds of 150-350km/h), which can cause injuries.

I finally got my driver's license after two tries! It is pretty easy to make simple mistakes that might lead to a failure during the test, but don't get discouraged if it happens to you. Failing doesn't mean you're a bad driver-just keep practicing and give it another shot. As for my case I took an extra step to help myself out. I reached out to a private licensed DMV attorney who helped me write a provisional letter. This allowed me to bypass the driving test altogether, and I was issued a provisional driver's license that's valid for 12 months. Now that I have my license, I can drive for a year before I need to renew! If you're feeling really nervous about the driving test, consider switching to a provisional driver's license. It's a great option that doesn't require a driving test. Good luck!

So many negative comments here...not defending him it was clearly horrible driving according to uk laws but let me give you insights about how driving in india works 1) there is no lane system in india, you won't see markings except from motorways...so mostly drivers don't have that info that his car is not going straight or he should use two hands its just like when you see a car coming from the opposite side move your car slightly and give space to pass thats it and even if you are driving in your lane you have to be cautious of coming any car from any side lane or from front that's why he was braking hardly on potential hazards 2) holding steering with one hand was not his arrogance or attitude... mostly people drive manual cars in india and due to heavy traffic you constantly need to change gears so mostly everyone use one hand for steering and one to change gears its just a different country, different rules and practices.... thing is he went too early for mock test he should have done practice first

I’ve often considered becoming a driving instructor but watching this makes me question whether my nervous system could handle it! Kudos to the instructor who was an absolute champ, even under significant stress! To the driver I would simply say to get a bunch of lessons and try to clear your mind of your existing preconceptions of what “driving” actually is. I totally understand that driving in India might be completely different and so you need to unlearn to a certain extent what you learned there. I learned to drive in the UK and the first time I drove in another country, Spain in my case, was a big shock due to the fact I had to switch sides of the road and deal with different road signs and an unfamiliar car etc. It’s not easy. You also need to prioritise listening and get yourself into a focussed mindset, and start studying the highway code. I would even suggest finding a circular bus route and get yourself a ticket and a seat at the front and observe how the bus driver navigates traffic and roundabouts and junctions. Watch how they observe the road around them in their mirrors and how they smoothly but deliberately make progress in a much larger vehicle than a car. You’ll learn a lot. Oh, and both hands on the wheel please. I passed my test in 1989 and driving with one hand on the wheel and one on the gear stick would probably have resulted in a fail. An examiner won’t give you bonus points for looking cool on your test! :) Good luck.
