I honestly feel like every single driving instructor has their own way of teaching people how to parallel park, up to a point where I am convinced that eventually I'll meet one that does it by observing star constellations for reference points and compensates for the Earth's spin momentum in order to avoid climbing the curb
@natan69Ай бұрын
That's most probably true :) First aim at the Vega, turn half of a tangent to the left, then aim your C pillar towards the half-moon and start steering 3.5 degrees towards the planet Mars, which you should be able to see with the naked eye by now just above the horizon, when it levels up with the Sirius constallation to your right, straighten up the wheel. You should be able to see the Earth from here :)

@ aw thank you so much ❤️ I sat mine at shieldhall, I was such a bag of nerves but my instructor told me to make small talk with the examiner, it actually relaxed me and helped me feel at ease. The manoeuvres are so tricky but I got mine at the end of the test (reverse bay) on the test centre. Only advice for the manoeuvres is to maybe spend a full lesson or two on them, or use the sticky dots to mark reference points in the car, my friend done that! Xxx

You do talk about body position, and you do demonstrate that your hands appear to stay on the wheel, but it would be good if you had actually said whether you actually need to keep hands on the wheel to pass. A relative of mine is convinced they can put their hand on the back of the passenger chair.
@thomaskilburn8452Ай бұрын
This is brilliant. This is definitely recommended for beginners. As an ex-learner myself, I can safely say that this is the kind of teaching I had from my previous instructor when l was learning to park. Took me a few tries, but eventually, once l got into it, it was kind of easy to do. Oh yeah, and just to remind anyone who is thinking about learning to drive out there, don't just suddenly rush into it because you won't know what you're doing unless your instructor tells you.

I made my license two years ago. The instructor made me park between two cars on a slope. But it was basically an early ending of the examination. He said he put me through enough stress and I passed the examination without a mistake. And added “finally someone I am confined to let through. I should only work on being less nervous”
@wrightwoodworkАй бұрын
Real world observation starts before you've even stopped. Then it's check what's happening around when you stop. If space is tight then position slightly wider from the car you stop beside. Then that allows you to put your angle on sooner then get the back in till you can start to turn in . I personally use the front left of the bonnet as reference of when I start to turn in. Then one you've run out of space behind but front still out you then go forward and left hand down and you may need to do a bit of crabbing with the front to go in . Not every space is possible without adjustment when theirr is only 40 cm front and back to spare. The main thing is going slow and keep observation going through the maneuvers.

I feel a little ashamed of myself. After 40+ years of driving and parking by myself, I have started allowing my car to automatically park for me.(both regular parking and parallel parking on the streets of New York City) At first, I was unsure and uneasy about it. However, after a year with the new car, I have started to get used to letting my BMW park itself. I guess it was inevitable. Back when I was learning to drive, there were no cell phones and navigation systems. Paper maps were necessary. Since I bought my first car with factory navigation 25 years ago, I ditched paper maps... I haven't had a paper map in any of my cars for well over 15 years..... I'm not even sure I know how to read paper maps while driving anymore. :)
@Client76Ай бұрын
I don't think you should feel ashamed. Times are changing. Cars today can drive themselves. I can't see anything wrong with using satnav instead of a paper map or letting the car park for you. The good thing is you will survive the final day when all satellites and electronics go down and the only way to survive the apocalypse will be to use an old car without any smart tech you will find in an abandoned garage 😉 You can't forget the skill.. Maybe overreacted, but hope you got the point 😀 It's OK to enjoy all kind of technology while knowing you can still survive without it.
@S_PaoliАй бұрын
@@Client76 well.... I always assumed that certain skills could not be forgotten... maybe.... I used to ride bikes from age 7 to at least ag 20. I stopped riding bikes for about 23 years. Then I got on a friend's bike and found out that I didn't know how to ride one anymore... took a couple of weeks before I was comfortable enough to ride around the neighborhood streeets. :) Also... I used to be able to speak German almost fluently before I turned 18. Didn't speak it again for almsot 30 years and I completely forgot the language.(except for greetings like good-bye and hello in German) :(

@@ClearviewDriving You could add tips on streets that have a decent curve to them, if you have any specific ones. I find that those are the most difficult ones the get right and "straight", since the distance to the kerb varies so that it's either closer at the wheels or in the middle. When other's have parked less than optimally (not "straight" or too far out), which is common due to this, their cars will also throw you off if you look at them.

What about when parallel parking into a tight spot? I’m amazed when I’ve done it but it definitely takes a bit longer with adjustments. My car is small but I always assume it’s longer than it is just to be safe and give myself space to get out.
@MrStonegroveАй бұрын
To simplify I would say the same basic principles apply, but you need to go forward to and then back again once or several times to straighten the car. This is assuming you actually hit the optimal spot when you start, otherwise you might end up doing more like "wiggling" the car further and further in.

At the very start, how do I get the correct distance between me and the car ahead , that I am beside I mean. Is it a meter distance gap ?
@MrStonegroveАй бұрын
Do you mean between the side of your car and the car in front of the space where you intend to park? If you know what you're doing, it's more or less the closer the better (within reason) if the space you want to get into is tight (short). The further out you are, the steeper the angle needs to be to get into the space, which then makes it harder to right the car. If there's more space, this isn't as much of an issue as long as you don't start very far out. Think of what would happen if you started on the opposite side of a wide street and tried to reverse into a tight space, to exaggerate. I wouldn't recommend it to start with, given one typically has less grasp of where the boundaries of the car are with less experience, but if it's really tight I might start with the mirrors of the cars almost touching. I then partly use the side mirror to know when to turn into the space. But this is something that comes from doing this a bazillion times. The point of specific references is to have a starting point when you don't yet know intuitively when to turn in and later right the car. That doesn't mean I get it right every single time. Sometimes you get it just a bit wrong when it's really tight and have to pull forward and readjust a bit, and that's fine. And if it's really off, it's usually easier to start over instead of trying to fix it.

I don't like the way "parking" is tested in the UK. In the Netherlands you are just tasked to 'park'. You as a driver get to decide yourself where to park and how to park, just like how it is in real life.
@ClearviewDrivingАй бұрын
You won't always be presented with the opportunity to forward bay park or pull up to an area with loads of space to park so it's important to know how to do other types of parking too. During a driving test not every student will be asked to do a parallel park it is just one of the manoeuvres that the examiner will choose at random to perform.
