In this week’s episode we continue working with the shiny hardware and it is going to be very interesting especially for those of you who want to know more about our sailing gear setup and more about the holes we need to drill to get the sailing equipment in place. How many holes do we need to drill, how many of them have been predrilled and filled before there spray painting sessions, where are they located and can we find them again.
Wilda is a Schionning Wilderness 1340 sailing catamaran. She is being finished in a shed outside Melbourne. Wilda will be powered by the Sun, the Wind and the Sea...

One step forward! It takes a lot of courage to take on a project like this. You’re doing a fantastic job.

Seems like the comments on this one are pretty critical. It's quite difficult to do a complex project, let alone to do it abroad, away from your home countries, but also to document it, and edit videos, and try to keep it interesting for an audience. Don't listen too much to the critics unless they have useful feedback. I appreciate you sharing your build in these videos. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking a look at the entire picture (which may be missed sometimes by many)! we really need the encouragement and it feels good to know that many people, like you, appreciate the effort overall. We do try to keep an eye open for the criticism and pick up what’s needed! Thanks again!

If you've lost your reinforcements try using a builder pipe, cable and stud detector they can pick up ferrous and none ferrous metals usually. The other way is to use a phone with a FLIR camera. ..and wait for or induce a temperature change they usually show up. 🧙🏻‍♂️👍🏼

Might I (respectfully) suggest you investigate single line reefing systems to obviate the need to go to the mast when things get nasty. Experienced this on a Jeanneau 54DS and it's fantastic with the ability to take and throw a reef sinle handed, from the safety of the cockpit.
@buildingwilda
@buildingwilda Ай бұрын
Absolutely. We will have 2 reef lines led back to the cockpit. Can't really sort the third one for now... I was always thinking single line reefing. Many have suggested to stick with traditional slab reefing. I'm thinking we should try single line and figure out what to do with all the extra string in the cockpit 🤣
@timothydunn5889
@timothydunn5889 Ай бұрын
@@buildingwilda I think there is a 2:1 block floating inside the boom, so that the tack and clew come down in unison. The line in the cockpit is equal to twice the height of the reef at the mast (as I remember).

Excellent video guys. Some innovative editing there. Someone is getting fancy with their skills!!! I was hoping to see a winch or track fitted but alas - not to be. As usual, I'll be back next week watching everything and unrealistically wanting more. You are doing a great job - keep it u.

It looks like you are getting this boat built faster than what I've heard it takes to build one. That's impressive and your work is mint. What do you expect the lightship weight to be or is that amount listed in the plans?

I hope you are decoring all holes and filling these with an epoxy mix, before drilling the final hole. Any ‘naked’ balsa in a bolt hole isnasking for moisture problems later

Mate, you can make a physical drill stop out of a bit of nylon rod stock, get the rod and drill hole down it for a slip fit on the intended drill bit ( in a lathe is best but you know ) then slip it over your drill bit and adjust the drill stick out from the chuck to eliminate any chance of drilling too deep, easy and fool proof. Make a couple of each size as they tend to disappear for a myriad of reasons.

Was at west windows today looking at rear doors and saw the rear door for your wilderness was being made by them aswell. What material are you using for the curved saloon windows and who did you get them from. What thickness did you use cheers greg
@buildingwilda
@buildingwilda Ай бұрын
Cool! Windows West has been good to work with. Very responsive. Cast acrylic for the windows. 10mm. Our material is from Acrycast. The company that started the job went out of business before finishing our job. The windows have since been remoulded by another company that did a good job. Plasview. Also really good to work with. Now we just need to get them mounted.... We'll see how we go.

Where did the boat name Wilda come from?
@buildingwilda
@buildingwilda Ай бұрын
It is a Swedish (Scandinavian I guess) girls name. Normally spelled Vilda. The name means something like the wild or lively one. We figured it was a good name for a Wilderness catamaran and went with a W.

How can you see the sails when you are using that central winch and jammers in the aft maybe a camera is needed Your track is not wide enough and you’ll need two winches on the port and starboard side not just on one side
@buildingwilda
@buildingwilda Ай бұрын
The central winch has its draw backs for sure. Not seeing the sails properly being chief amongst them. As for the winches, yes, two each side and the one in the middle. The track is according to design, and as long as it can be. Sure, could be an advantage to have a longer track, better control of the shape of the sail further out, but not an option for the design.
