I am forever in your debt for that "bag trick." I harden antlers and bones before I use them for scales by vacuuming them with thinned 50/50 acetone-acrylic, and that glue bag trick will be the icing on the cake for attaching them. Thanks...

Just wanted to say, thank you sir. Your channel is very inspiring. I've been messing around with making knives for about 9 years. Just a hobby. In fact, your ferrier rasp video is what got me going to purchase a forge. So now, I've got to try making this cleaver. Hope it turns out as good as yours did. Cheers!

The issue of the softer central antler material could be sorted at both ends by adding metal bolsters and pommel , and along the handle length by removing majority of thickness from the softer centre before the actual final fitting up. Nice job Gary , you're a talented , cleaver chap !!

Thank you for showing that a weld in a knife isn't always a bad thing, I can't tell ya how often I hear about it. If you're doing an etch I can see how would be bad, its probably a different color and could mess up the pattern. But most everything else it's as or stronger than what you're welding.

Been doing it for ever. Never knew why people didn't. Works better to fill by putting the corner in between your fingers and folding the bag opening your fingers. Squirt the epoxy right in the corner for minimal air entrainment Also burp the air out of the bag. For best and easiest mix pinch the epoxy in the corner of the bag then rotate it circles on your open palm... Very nice video Gary.

Very nice use of two old tools. However you do need to seal the antler as it is porous, which will allow for bacteria to grow in it. A penetrating oil that’s food safe will do the job to a point. The best is to use a poly finish used on counter tops and thin it out so it soaks in and seals the pores. Then light sanding to bring the antler back up to the surface. Butcher block oil wipe and your done.

Hi Gary just watched the video its brilliant, you keep coming up with new idea's and concepts, loved the epoxy trick, having said that some people drill out the pith from the antler and fill it with dye' d epoxy, you can sand like the rest of the handle. keep up the good work mate and stay safe. Mick

Nice Lob1 the only thing that I would have done different, is make the scale's thinner, and left the Antler Finish.

@8ank3r4 жыл бұрын
Don't know if anyone else said this already but, if you don't touch metal with the sand paper you won't get that black on the antler. It's tedious but you can do it without too much extra effort
@charlesabaday6815 Жыл бұрын
Correct. Adding to this, just before getting to the metal, use crazy glue or some other clear glue to saturate the spongy end of the scale, to seal it. Once it is full solid, no other dust gets in there.

Beautiful..!! I'd like it with a bit of Outter Cortex left on the Antler (Texan)... To reduce the Honeycomb you would need to remove more material from the Inside of your Scale medium as apposed to doing most of your reduction from the Outside. I've not found a way to keep the Steel Dust out of the Honeycomb... Call it a Feature as opposed to a Flaw! Cheers from Southeast Texas!
