The area now occupied by Clementi Avenue 1 was once known as “Sussex Estate.” It was named after the historic county of Sussex in England.
Sussex Estate housed families of British senior non-commissioned officers in the mid-1950s.
When Clementi underwent major development in 1975, Sussex Estate was retained, but it was eventually demolished in 1997.
HDB Town Development:
Clementi is one of the earliest Housing and Development Board (HDB) towns.
Its development took place primarily in the 1970s, with plans for the town to be self-sufficient and provide a range of facilities and services.
Over the years, Clementi has grown from its humble beginnings into a vibrant and popular estate
Military History:
The area that now forms Clementi New Town was once a military installation called “Colombo Camp.”
The HDB resettled more than 800 villagers to make way for the new town.
