Best ever. I once sat on Cleo’s lap when I was young. Lovely woman, and my hero.

She is 40 here. She has said in an interview that, in her mind, she always feels 40. This video was something of a turning point. Personally, I think she really came into her own when she was in her late 40's, and well into her 50's and '60's. Carnegie Hall would be just 5 years from here. Then, Showboat, and then Broadway. Shortly after this, she would begin to wear her hair only in her trademark natural, curly style. From her mid 40's on, she carried herself with more authority in her mannerisms while singing and her voice was even richer. There was an ease, a knowing confidence...she was a star.

I had one of her albums--FEEL THE WARM I think the title was--and I played it to death. This was 50 years ago at least, and I've never forgotten that voice!

I don't understand how this part of USA doesn't know her. She was was always a sellout in Detroit. She and John had family homes in California and New York.

A truly unique artist, with a voice of such great versatility, and what a lifelong partnership. Johnny's musical arrangements were always something special.

I love Cleo Laine. I saw her many times in NYC at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. How I wish those concerts had been recorded on video.

There is a Cleo Laine Live at Carnegie Hall album; it's fabulous- my favorite of hers. Her voice was at her peak of her vocal range, including the hishest notes! Listen to her version Riding High on it. Her voice really sends me!

Great. Do you have other Talk of the Town recordings such as Jack Jones in 1969 and in 1972? also, do you have performers appearing at the Talk of the Town?

Cleo Laine: agreat singer, without question, but far too much 'artfulness' in her choice of songs and not enough gritty down swinging stuff.... She should have learned that essential Duke Ellington Lesson: If it don't have that swing, well it don't mean a [damned] thing........
@cathleensolomon30794 жыл бұрын
That came later...in the '70's and beyond. This is "early Cleo".
@MrAlexsegal3 жыл бұрын
Ellington composed songs such as “Prelude to a Kiss” and “Sophisticated Lady” which are as non-gritty as the “artsy” songs Cleo sang in this set. I think Cleo has a gift not only for swinging songs but for slow songs.

Perdido is by Ellington, she really swings! Especially on the Cleo Laine Live at Carnegie Hall album! Did you listen to the Please Don't Talk About Me near the end of this video? And the song at the end? What do you think she is doing when she's exchanging scatting with John Dankworth's saxophone? Swinging hard!!
@iangallagher54855 ай бұрын
Did you not see the video until the end? About halfway through this set Cleo sings Gershwin's 'Fascinating Rhythm', and that swing like none other.....
