Thank you for this sober reflection of a highly emotional topic. ... I think that by de-emotionalizing we make it easier for the victims to actually come forward and report clergy misconduct.

I live in New Mexico and knew a couple of people who were abused by priests so I was interested when the scandal hit. New Mexico had a lot of abusive priests because the Catholic Church had a "treatment" center for priests here and many priests remained here after completing their supposed treatment. They were not wanted where they had come from so they stayed here and abused large numbers of children. So many children were abused here that the Archdiocese of Santa Fe ended up going bankrupt. The Catholic Church is certainly not the only church to have problems with abusing children. But it was a huge deal in New Mexico because there are so many Catholics here.
