I’ve been a lifelong Indians/Guardians fan, born in 2004, but this is still painful to watch. My dad, who does not believe in curses and jinxes, specifically remembers saying after Bobby Bonilla struck out “man, I never thought I’d live to see the day. I wish my dad was here to see this with me.” Then of course disaster struck shortly thereafter. I think one day we will win the World Series, and it will come in my lifetime

1997-98 was kind of a "Dream Season" if you will for NBC Sports. In that time frame, they had the NBA Finals, the World Series, and the Super Bowl. 1995-96 was also like that in that besides those aforementioned events, they also had the Summer Olympics from Atlanta.

Bob Costas is a great sports commentator as well a studio host. I always enjoy him since I was a teenager. N similarly Hannah Storm I still remember her + she's an excellent sports analyst of course she's with ESPN yet her enthusiasm 4 sports is so unique. Now 4 the late Joe Morgan I don't recall him working with NBC sports 4 the MLB (97) 🌎 series while affiliating with Bob & the other guy don't his name neither familiar with him but with ESPN whilst joining the late Jon Miller Joe was outstanding b4 his death. Oh Keith O'Brien yeah I'm familiar with him 2.

Why was Livan Hernandez named the 1997 World Series MVP? Yes, he won two games (against a postseason legend at that point in Orel Hershiser), but he also had a 5:27 ERA. Al Leiter among the Marlins' pitchers, had more strikeouts than Hernandez (10 as opposed to Hernandez's 7) and a slightly lower ERA (5:06). The World Series MVP Award in 1997 should've been awarded to Moises Alou. He hit 3 home runs, had a .321 batting average during the seven games (only Darren Daulton and Charles Johnson had higher batting averages among the Marlins during the seven games), 9 RBI, 2 doubles, 6 runs, and 9 hits. Livan Hernandez has to go up there with being one of the worst and least deserving World Series MVPs in baseball history.

The roughest moment to watch. As a Pirates fan first, I should feel happy for Jimmy and Bobby finally getting their moment and their just desserts, finishing a 6 year journey. But I'm a Cleveland fan second. It feels wrong. And to still have Mesa blaming everyone except himself for repeatedly blowing off Alomar's signs in the 9th a full 26 years later is just infuriating. Maybe trust a 2X Gold Glove catcher.

It's been many years now, but I still don't completely understand why the Marlins did a fire-sale (trading away their best talent) so soon after winning a world championship. In 1998, they had the worst record in all of Major League Baseball, losing over 100 games. If I were a Marlins fan, I would've taken it as an absolute slap in the face and betrayal. It's an indicator that my team isn't completely committed to winning year in and year out.
@StephensBaseballArchives

The short version is that Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga was looking to sell the team. They were losing money at the gate, and didn't make much through local TV/radio contracts. All those veterans hired to win in 1997 would be much more expensive in future years. So Huizenga sold when the team was at maximum value, getting rid of the expensive veterans to maximize his profit.

I really didn't like how NBC had Hannah Storm repeatedly press Wayne Huizenga and the Marlins organization over a potential sale of the team (especially with the then acting commissioner in earshot). That frankly, is very inappropriate and insensitive after such an exciting and dramatic conclusion to the World Series.

@@rafaelsale6364 NBC did a similar sort of thing two years later at the World Series, when Jim Gray kept pressing Pete Rose to admit that he bet on baseball. There's a time and a place to ask "hard hitting" questions and doing that after something positive and uplifting like the All-Century Team celebration wasn't that. I recall Bob Costas said that it would be like if a reporter was at the wedding for one of President Richard Nixon's daughters, and suddenly stuck a microphone in President Nixon's face to inquire him about the Watergate scandal. Either way, it just to me, reeks of yellow journalism, where you're putting somebody on the spot to get an instant headline and without any concern of being tact.
@TMC1982Part2
@TMC1982Part2 Жыл бұрын
@@brian_brennan42 I don't care quite frankly. This isn't 60 Minutes. So what exactly is NBC and Hannah Storm trying to gain with their blunt, on the spot, "gotcha", "I got to make a headline" style of questioning? I don't know about you, but I for one don't want to dwell in a bunch of negative, pessimistic stuff after witnessing something thrilling as the seventh game in the World Series ending with a walk off base hit in extra innings. My point is that there's a time and a place to ask hard hitting questions like the stuff pertaining about the potential sale of the Marlins. Should Wayne Huizenga have been questioned about whether or not he was going to sell the Marlins, absolutely, but doing it as he's celebrating his team winning the World Series in front of a frenzied home crowd in Miami isn't the way to do that. I guess that what I'm to say is that in cases like this, you have to tread very carefully and cautiously.

I was at this game. We were in the upper deck in left field. As I watched this video complete today ( I skipped over the advertisements...) I kept thinking over and over again what a drag it would have been if they used the Pitch Timer clock like they have to do now. It just would have screwed up the dynamics. THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A CLOCK IN BASEBALL. Baseball is a summer time, leisure time game and that tradition should never be tampered with.
