All schools across the US is full of awful meals that are pre packaged. School lunch should be nutritious. Parents depend on schools to feed them when they aren’t with their kids and what we are offering them is shit even dogs and rats wouldn’t eat. So maybe instead of having some schools complaining about how it isn’t their fault that kids aren’t eating they should find out why and change it.

Like how it was when I was a kid. In Nevada the lunch budget is $4.50 per student. They get milk, the trashiest chicken nuggets, a roll and a cookie. Really? Someone is getting pockets lined. Pure corruption and laziness. Food industry is one field where you can serve better for less including the extra labor. Prepackaged Sysco foods have diminished the restaurant industry and schools. I mean health concerns aside, you could still line corporate pockets by simply calling out a fast food franchise and still save money! I'll bet just about any McDonald's franchisee would love a ten thousand Happy meal contract at $4 each served on site! Kids would get a burger, milk, caramel apple and a toy! Still cheaper and more nutritious than what they're getting now!

In my high school in Malaysia, our school would hire outside caterers to cook in our school, so in our cafeteria it would be like a mini foodcourt, however it was a bit more expensive, a bowl of rice or noodles would be about RM5 to RM7, many teenagers who couldn't afford the food would just buy some fruits or a sandwich

Prepackaged stuff is way more expensive. From scratch even with labor is way cheaper, healthier and tastier. Boils down to laziness and who's in who's pocket for the contracts. Sad.
@mdd42966 жыл бұрын
"From scratch even with labor is way cheaper" Totally wrong. Especially in north america and western europe where wage and regulation are really high in comparison to the rest of the world. Mass production is always cheaper: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economies_of_scale. In fact, school kitchens are small scale mass production of sort where they buy ingredients in bulks to make thousands of identical dishes. You cant even begin to save that much money/capita cooking for yourself or your family. People who cook daily look at the price tag of prepackaged meals and think they are "more expensive" because those demographic honestly cant see alternatives to those hours outside cooking. Let's say you need roughly 1 hours to prepare every meals: wash and process the ingredients in different way (goes into your utility bills), heat them up (goes into your energy bills), organise them on dish, make the table... Then 30 minutes to clean up and wash the dishes after meals. The time and effort get longer the more members there are in your household... That's 1.5*3 = 4.5 hours a day. 4.5*30 = 135 hours a month = nearly 6 days/month. If those hours are simply sunk into a minimum wage job in the USA, it would earn $978,75. Not to mention those hour could be spent honing your income earning skills or train new ones, read about business opportunities or create new one (like... ironically enough make youtube video about cooking or cook for other people...) or simply pursue leisure outside cooking that is actually much better for you than a "healthy meal" like physical activities.

Does everything have to be wrapped or boxed these days in school lunches? (This is the second part of the video of them cooking REAL food.) How difficult (and cheap) is it to make egg salad and runs salad sandwiches? Celery/Carrot sticks with rsynch? Carrot raisin salad? Loaded baked potatoes? Half banana, half apple, have orange - as a choice or pre selected lunch item? The bread? Pumpernickel bread? Wheat bread? While grain bread? Let them choose or mix and match with the tuna/egg salad sandwiches. Milk, yogurt cups, cheese sticks or small round gudha cheese in red wax, home made pudding made with milk, frozen yogurt. BP & J sandwiches? Corn, homemade mashed potatoes with butter, coleslaw, fried okra, green beans, black beans, homemade chili and slaw/cheese hot dogs, taco salad, Cobb salad, red potatoes with seasonings, chicken & dumplings, baked chicken? Rice? Egg drop soup? Egg rolls? Tacos? Empanadas? Baked chips? Homemade chili? Grilled cheese? Hamburger/Cheese burger with lettuce, tomatoe and pickle? Milk, chocolate milk, orange juice, spoke juice, tea? Most parents could make these lunches for an average of 75 cents a day or $3.75/week. Schools buy in bulk (half price) and can't pass out more than a $0.50unch tray to be sold at ~$4.00/day/per child. Now staff do a third of the work because very little if any cooking required.
