A 999 call reveals a four-year-old saving her mum's life by dialling for help and opening with the line: 'I'm just having a bit of my lunch'.
Little Mya made the emergency call after she witnessed her mother, Rachel, 25, collapse on the floor.
She had only been taught about 999 at school the week before and was home alone with her mum.
Her mother suffers from a Functional Neurological Disorder, a condition which can cause stroke-like symptoms and seizures.

@@Yourlocalpenguinenthusiast One time a cop showed up at our door and my Mom accused me of calling 911 because she thought I panicked (I have anxiety but she was RIGHT THERE I'd run to her not call 911) so we had a big argument, I was like 13 at the time, in front of the cop who must have felt really awkward or really 'they don't pay me enough' and it ended with me screaming in typical teenager fashion "YOU NEVER BELIEVE ANYTHING I SAY!" and stalking off to my room, slamming the door. She later admitted to me that she might have done it because she was dialing a number with 411 in it and this was back in the late 90's so you just had pushbutton phones with the cords and all that. We laugh about it now. She's anxious too, I get all my problems from her side of the family we can trace all this anxiety and depression stuff back nearly 100 years. Like the great great uncle I had who 'fell out a window' in then British Guyana. We think the family just told everyone that so the church would let them bury him on their grounds because they were Catholic and they think suicide is a sin and all that crap.

They are trained to do that, they have to make sure EVERY caller ID properly questioned to make sure there's no emergency or someone holding them against their will. But yeah, glad he didn't just hang up.

Well yeah it's a whole different protocol you're trained on if a child calls. At least we have GPS now and tracking but before that if you got someone this young they might not be able to read or tell you where they were, it's a puzzle and you have to figure it out all while keeping the kid calm.

She really did bury the lede on that one. Very lucky the guy asked the right questions and didn't just dismiss it and tell her off for playing with the phone.

They never do. I once called 999 by mistake when I was disinfecting my landline phone (ages ago). I apologised profusely, but they kept asking whether I was able to talk freely and were only satisfied when my mother came to the phone to assure them we were OK.

This is why it is very very important for 999 call dispatchers to be taught how to communicate with children because it can be very scary for them seeing their mother or father fall down and be non responsive. Well done to the call dispatcher.

Seems as if the dispatchers have been trained not to dismiss very young callers from the get go, but quietly probe them for information in the event, as with this case, they are ringing because their parent has collapsed.

I don't think many children would react so calmly. I mean when MY Mommy collapsed on the floor unconscious and I was NINE, I just started crying buckets because I immediately assumed she was dead and I was now all alone... good thing we were in a pharmacy line and people helped her... She was okay, by the way, just high temperature :) That traumatised the hell out of me though, as even now when I see someone not moving for, like, a "solid" minute and I can't see their face I get extremly and irrationally scared and have to go check if they're alive.
