Confession: I’m in the UK and we have a very different idea of “small house” to you guys in the US, so I assumed this was going to be about your 2000sqft “small” house. It was so refreshing to see your modestly sized home- and how spacious you have still made it feel! We now live in our “forever home” which is a 5 bed, pretty large house. I say “large” because it is quite big (not enormous) by UK standards. It’s still only 1800sqft!! So I got lots of useful tips from this video :)

Family of four (two adults, one seven year old and one newborn) in a 600 sqf/55 sqm apartment here… but we ARE a bit cramped, no doubt about that. Looking forward to moving to a 750-850 sqf/70-80 sqm apartment soon. It works at the moment though, because we’re pretty minimalist and are extremely mindful about how much stuff comes through our door. There’s a classic George Carlin routine where he talks about buying a house, getting stuff, needing a bigger house to fit the stuff, then getting more stuff, needing a bigger house, you get the picture! It predates me by decades but ever since I saw it, it’s stuck with me. As my own kids get bigger (and their clothes and toys get bigger - not more numerous, just physically larger), a bigger house is more and more tempting. But I agree that it’s more to pay for, clean, repair, insure, heat… ugh.

We bought a 930sq ft house in the Midwest when our boys were little. They’re both grown and out of the house now. I’m glad they grew up in a small house and shared a room. Yes!! As an organizer, mom to 4 almost 5---the first thing I ALWAYS encourage other moms when it comes to keeping a tidy home is starting by tackling surfaces---clearing surfaces is CRUCIAL!! The more we see clear surfaces, the easier it becomes to keep it that way and maintain them. The more clutter we see, the more we get used to seeing it and don't often realize why we are so overwhelmed--when in reality, that clutter fogs ours minds!

I’d bet your home is lovely, warm& inviting and filled with love ❤️ My 10 yr old Granddaughter lives the school year with her Dad and toddler Sister in a 48’ Gooseneck RV! It sits on his Parents 5 acres. He was having to work 3 jobs to afford Apts or they’d share 1 room (including his now ex-wife) in his parents house. It was just too much, so He got this. Two adults here in under 350 sq ft for the past 6 years. Fortunately/unfortunately I went (not completely, but legally) blind, so "a home for the stuff you need" was a must-do... not an option. I keep my cooking tools (ladles, spatulas, strainers, measuring spoons/cups hanging on hooks attached to a strong metal grid on the wall behind my sink and the small stuff hanging from the top edge of a baker's rack. which also has a strong metal grid for hanging lesser-used tools. I know exactly where to reach to find and put back exactly what I need to cook , bake and do my canning. Before my major vision loss, I used to have turmoil trying to find the right pot or pan or utensil in a whole bunch of drawers and cabinets that were essentially small and large junk drawers. I'd go nuts if there wasn't a yard, and an attic, though.
@JoRake13 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that STRONG magnets with hook can hold a metal cup hook rack onto your fridge (if its not chrome/stainless) and give you room to hang more. Your kitchen may look a bit like a restaurant kitchen - a bit industrial with everything needed within reach and no need to walk around with sharp knives and hot pans looking for something... but it works for me.

I loved what you said “more stuff calls for more stuff!” Very very true! I have also learned to let things go! My daughter just turned one and she is my last baby. I had to let things go and stop keeping things bc of silly sentimental reasons. A lot of my clutter was bc I was sad to let them go or I didn’t want to hurt the person that gifted me an item. Even if I didn’t need it or have us for it. By letting things go, it freed up space in my home and created less things to clean.

Love this video. We bought what we could afford, which was a small, 1945 home. We have 3 girls who are teens/almost teens, and it’s (phew) tight!! It has been HARD to create a home that feels comfortable that we can also homeschool and work at home from. It has required a lot of moving things around, flipping and upgrading furniture off Facebook until we found the right pieces (and then investing in more quality pieces that are similar to what works.) It has been 4 years and it’s still not 100% there, but we’ve come SO far, and it feels like “home” and makes sense for us.” Living in a small home has helped us all be more mindful and creative, and most of all… grateful! These are such excellent things to be instilling in the character of our children. I am thankful for our small home! ❤️

When I first moved to the states I couldn't believe the size of the houses and garages, which mostly seemed to store tones of boxes not cars. The house I bought for my family of four was 2100 sq ft, which seemed huge to us. However within a few years we had also filled half our garage with boxes and filled the house up. I learned that the more space you have the more you buy. Now my kids are adults and I live alone I love my small one bed flat (about 400 sq ft) It's so easy to look after and fits everything I need in it. It stops me buying extra things that I want and I just stick to what I need so I have a comfortable, tidy home and a good savings account. In my house I spent every penny I earned buying things for my house so could never save, so glad I no longer live that way.

It did have a ripple effect, and the last two apartments I've lived in over a five-year period I received the entire deposit back when I moved out. Last August, my move was one block away and with the same rental company, so they just took it off my rent for the new place, which was also nice. Other habits I added include vacuuming often and making sure my cat's litter box is clean and fresh.

That creative use of space tip is so important! When my daughter was an infant we used the top of the washing machine as the changing table😆. But the tough part is how small spaces force you to constantly reevaluate and edit, especially with growing kids. Just because something worked last month doesn't mean it will work forever. Now that the baby is a toddler we need that top of the washer space to store recycling out of reach!

Great tips. In the UK houses are a lot smaller than those in the UK, so we have to be creative on space. For example, not many houses have a mud room, so have to keep coats & shoes etc in the loo, which is then called a cloackroom. We often also don't have a utility/room, so a washing machine is often in the kitchen. And a tumble dryer, if owned, is often in the garage. We also don't have a pantry but cupboards instead.

We also have a small house (1100 sq ft) that because of its age (~100 years old) has less than ideal closets and not much wall space. I'm definitely going to think more about being creative with storage AND start a daily decluttering routine. But first, coffee - for sure, as I sip mine this morning and watch more of your videos. :) Thanks for all you do!

New subscriber here! I absolutely loved this video! My house is the same size and sometimes I worry we will need to upsize soon, but I love these tips. Made me feel like my house wasn’t too small at all!

Love, LOVE this video. It's so practical and genuinely helpful. I sometimes see videos on how to organize a huge pantry and think they are ridiculous. Easy peasy. Trying to make my small space work for my husband and two teenage sons sometimes feels like a life size game of Blokus. All. The. Time. But we make it work because, like you, we don't want the headache of a huge mortgage. So thanks for creating content I can really use and relate to.

I love how you explained everything about this topic. We are a family of 5 living in a 900sqft. With one bathroom. Yes you read that right, haha. It gets tricky sometimes when guests are over, but overall I Love my small space.

I also discovered that as I use the air fryer more it's easier to wash up the few tools, etc while cooking. It was six cats, you have to stay on top of things as far as their food area their litter box area it makes them happy it makes you happy. Ease of access is everything. But it has to be logical. I have tossed the beat up not good utensils pots pans etc. that was not even worth donating. "FHA closet that used to be required at an entryway has a bookcase in there that is a pantry. It's right around the corner no big deal. But it also has that rod that hangs in there.. well in Florida we don't have much snow. So I have the flocked hangers that hold about six of my Trader Joe's bags. Those are my go to bags because they are canvas and very reusable. And I try my best to hang them right up right away. So I know right where they are. I only have about five pairs of shoes. Not a big shoe person. And they are all in that closet by the door on the floor. No big deal. I don't need a special place to put five pairs of shoes. In my master bathroom is where my four drawer storage thing is for my underwear, socks stuff like that. All of my closet is broken out in how the clothes are hung up in there. I go from no sleeve, to cap sleeve to three-quarter sleeve to the long sleeve...So when you hang everything up in the correct colors and stuff all of your storage is underneath that. I can go in my bathroom, take my shower and get dressed with make up and everything and walk out and I'm totally done. As soon as I close the closet doors everything's gone. I have no bedroom drawer set at all. Don't need it. End it really helps you keep your mind focused on what you need and don't need. As for the rest of the house currently, when I get in a funk the place looks like a bomb struck it. So right now I need a good bomb. So thank you so much for your suggestions. I really agree about the flat space clutter that is the big thing because you feel guilty when you're throwing away stuff that you think you're going to need some day. That is bad insecurity. So thank you thank you. Gail in Central Florida. Thursday, June 14, 2022. Now I will have to get up and stop watching KZbin and put on some good Tom Petty or some kind of rock 'n' roll or something and get busy. Peace and blessings my. dear.

Love every tip in this video! We have a smaller home too and are expecting baby #2 in the winter. I often get sucked into the temptation to wish for a bigger home for a family of 4, but there are definitely some changes we can make to maximize our space. These ideas really made me realize how important your mindset about your home is!

Love your tips and will definitely implement some even though we do have a "bigger" house! We mainly went for more space (4 bedroom, 2.5 bath) because my husband's parents stay for like 6 MONTHS when they come visit and I don't think I would be able to handle tripping over them in a small space for that amount of time hahaha. I'm just glad we have an eat-in kitchen and no dining room (those are complete wastes of space IMO!) and no more than 2 full baths to clean.

Great video!! I love my small home too-especially when it’s time to clean! I have wasted space (screened porch) the size of a small living room that’s not utilized. Plus my thought process was to not be house poor and be able to enjoy life via vacations.

When we built our retirement home, I eliminated “unnecessary” closets. The contractor questioned my decision until I told him closets end up storing a lot of “unnecessary” STUFF! He thought on that and concluded they do store STUFF that we don’t ever use! Our floor plan had 5 closets; I kept 2. The elimination of the other 3 added more floor space to each room. One eliminated closet created space for a built in desk/office area. When I get this notion to store something, I remind myself why I eliminated closets. Oh, and I refuse to store anything in my attic! It is completely empty.

Two sounds like a lovely number of closets. We are currently living in our 550 sq ft Airbnb…it has 0 closets. Like not even a linen closet. It kills me. Can’t wait to live in a place with closets again! But yea…5 is totally overkill

We did the same thing when we were buying. Savings was (and still is) a priority to us, so we bought a smaller fixer upper. It was a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom when we bought it but, with an unfinished 4th bedroom and 2nd bathroom. One of our bedrooms has evolved as our family and needs have changed. It was my dedicated home office when I worked from home, but now that I’ve started a new job and am back in the office, we’re converting it to a playroom for our kids with a small office area for managing bills (and the few instances I may need to work from home).

I live in a 613 sq ft house with my husband. I think we could use a bit more space (like three bedrooms instead of two) but all your reasons for loving your small house are the same reasons we love ours. Agree with all your tips, too! To make life more comfortable, I've cut way back on toiletries, massively downsized my wardrobe, avoided processed foods, limited furniture, and stopped buying in bulk. It all adds up! Living in a reasonably sized space really saves money in so many ways so we can spend it on more fun things.

I have a suggested tip on packaging. Like crackers, cookies, even in the freezer, I use the #7 large file folder rubber bands. We used to call them the redweld rubber bands because they fit the large legal folders so well.. That is my clipping system. when I open up a package, I fold it down and then I use a rubber band to make it fit that entire package. It's like that being that Marie Kondo or whatever her name is way of taking care of T-shirts and stuff in your dresser drawers. Really works. And it keeps stuff from falling out all over the place by mistake. Perfect example I bought my frozen blueberries for the week at Aldi's for the week. And I opened up the package, used some and snapped it shut. Sure...but Rather than putting a rubber band around the whole thing, idiot here tossed it into the freezer. And of course it opened and a whole bunch of blueberries went everywhere. So God has a way of straightening your butt out. And when my freezer is organized I use all of the food that is in there correctly. And as I open frozen vegetable packages for example, if you use 1/2 package, you roll it down & rubber band it..I use that in my office. The kitchen. Just everywhere because it works. And a big rubber band can hold together a bunch of papers that you want to hang onto. Oh wow. Logic. Give it a shot. You'll be very surprised... iYou're welcome.. now I need to go throw a bunch of crap off of all of my flat surfaces. (Like two cats. Sorry.).

Thank you, Kallie! So helpful! I love multipurpose rooms, furniture and things. I did flat surface cleaning recently and it had been too long because everything was dusty. I have bins under the bed and use vertical storage with shelves and hooks to hang things with handles. I love a tidy home but when I wait too long between straightening it becomes too overwhelming and who needs that? 🥰

Great video! I, too, have a small house (slightly larger than yours at a little over 1200 sq ft) with no garage. My biggest problem is a lack of storage space in the kitchen and I love to cook. If you could do a video with tips on very small kitchens, it would be so very much appreciated! I just recently found your channel and have subscribed. Keep up the good work!

Fantastic Video Kallie! I’m now Single, 58 and living alone in a small 1 bedroom Apt. Going from a 2 story, 4 bedroom 2 bath 2,000 sq ft house w/ big garage and bigger backyard including huge deck, all with a family to 650 sq ft Apt all alone was quite the shock! No one visits. I have no family or friends here. The Silence is deafening at times. The clutter has gotten so bad it really should be paying rent! I really enjoy your channel. This one has me motivated to tackle surface clutter. Your Videos are always filled with practical tips that will improve my quality of life. Thanks 😊

Yes! Make rooms do double-duty by being creative with decor and thoughtful about "things". My adult daughter, her teenage daughter, the hubs, me, two cats, and a Malinois/Pit mix all live together in 1100 sq feet over two floors. -- one bathroom :( -- Sometimes the dining room is a school office. Sometimes my dressing room is an art studio. And, I have to admit, sometimes it feels a bit crowded. I think I'll try your flat surface idea for a while. After all, if the visual clutter at eye level is minimal it should make a difference.

Love this video, we are in a smaller home too. The only thing that really drives me crazy is that we have a tiny kitchen, and as a person who loves to cook, this makes me nuts. The only thing I would want different, is a bigger kitchen- hopefully in a few years, knock on wood! :)

i'm about to move into a place with the smallest kitchen ever. one counter top to use for everything- dish rack, air fryer, chopping veggies, etc. i'm gonna make a stove cover to use as a removeable extra surface area!! now where i'm gonna store everything is another question lmao

Yes. We had a very small kitchen when we bought the house. For some reason someone in the 60s thought it's a great idea to have a separating wall. We removed the wall and now we have a very nice open kitchen with a nice island. So much more space to work with and I love it. I can finally put something out of the way without having to deal with it while cooking. So much better than stacking stuff and it's still in the way.

Tiny kitchen can be so inconvenient, but if we use the principle of minimalism and multifunction appliances, it can help so much! I find that my kitchen usually hosts the most clutter. I just made this video sharing how I quickly decluttered my kitchen so a nicer visual. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp7LhJqqhbGfqpY xCC
