Here is a clever tool use you wouldn't expect! What I am using are Martinez Tools Stair gauges, and yes you could use your finger, and it would be good enough most of the time but this makes it extremely consistent and is installed in a heartbeat so why not?
I needed to rip a 1/4" off the edge of this treated board and didn't feel like getting my table saw out, but I needed an accurate and consistent cut.

Ive made many rip cuts just holding the front of the saw shoe. I've never had it bind on me while doing so, as the saw is then travelling in a straight line. I've only done this with sheet goods, a knot could cause some trouble. If it did, the saw would kick backwards away from your other hand. Frightening, not harmful. But that's me, use stair gauges if you wish, they are cheaper than whatever this thing is.

@@mechminded2207 in all of them you can flip the guide upside down and push it in so all of it is within the area of the table, this means virtually no chance for damage or loss. depending on the length, you might end up with some of the rod sticking out of the other side, but if you cut off that extra length, you'd still have like 6 times the capability of this thing and a rough scale for length. Seems like this thing would be much easier to lose and does not have nearly enough of a reference plane to provide straight cuts (for an amateur at least) especially with the position of it and it's sharp hexagonal face (compared to the lead-in curve and flat face of the sleds) Edit: don't mind the talk about hexagons, got confused about a very similar product I saw on another short, and I didn't realise you meant that this one was easier to lose and had lower functionality which is basically what I said. The guard is there for safety purposes, but its counter productive if it makes it 50% safer 90% of the time but 100% less safe 10% of the time. I bet you'd find a lot of 9 fingered carpenters who hood their guard back like that, lol Especially on a job site, you cant anticipate everything going on around you, say you hit a hard knot or a nail in the board or some new guy is walking by with the coffees and trips on an extension cord and instead of ditching the coffees or taking the fall he tries to steady himself with the board you're cutting. Now you're missing the only 2 fingers that your wife cares about, you're covered in scalding hot coffee, you're bleeding all over the only good set of prints, and the worst part is that you and everyone else has to attend an extra hour long safety meeting this week and you're going to blame the FNG, but everyone else is going to blame you because you should have known better.

Try ripping 1/4" on a 2×4 along the grain on its 1-1/2" side. You use two studs together to balance the circular saw. Nail the two studs together, chalkline the one. Cut one side of the stud first. Then flip the studs and do the other side to meet the first cut. Try to be as accurate as you can. Sometimes you just got to figure things out best way you can. Just make sure you got a sharp blade and a strong wrist. Keep your hand steady 👌

We used to do something similar when we had to make long rips with a saw with no fence. We would lock a pair of vise grip "style" locking pliers to the toe of the shoe on the saw at the width of our rips. The handles on the pliers also extended further out in front of the saw giving a little more to hold if you felt the need to two hand the saw.

You can 100% predict a sudden kick back in the saw. If you cut like a blind person and can't follow a simple pencil mark and get so far off the line you try to force the saw back to your line that's the only way a circular saw is going to bind and kick in which case it will kick backwards it's not like it'll kick and jump 10 feet in the air. If you have string bean arms and can't handle a simple kick back on a saw then you shouldn't be using it

@@ronaldterry2234 I’ve had some remote jobs before and yeah a generator does come in handy I keep one inside of my utility truck. Tools on the side generator locked up in the bed. And as I said I use jacks with rollers so it’s supported and takes maybe two minutes to set up so even wet or heavy wood isn’t an issue and my table saw hasn’t had any issues but then again I built my own so it’s a bit more durable than a regular table saw. I had inherited some vintage tools from my grandpa and I converted a 1950’s bench grinder to run a saw blade and welded a warehouse for it which I have supported by a metal base that folds in to make it easier for transport and storage and bolted on a wood top which I shave down once in awhile when the wood surface gets bad. The surface maybe could do better as plastic in terms of sliding wood on it but I haven’t encountered any issues from it affecting my work. Trust me I know this sounds like a Frankenstein table saw but the table doesn’t wobble and the rpms are pretty good and I’m able to replace the blade and use to cut metal without issue. In the 7 years of owning it and a fast clean up it hasn’t done me wrong. And prefer that over the last few store bought table saws I own. Before you ask I do carpentry and welding but lean towards welding so I enjoy more durable tools.
