Great Idea! I was stupefied to see the minimum price of a plastic stick was $20, so searched for "homemade degassing tool". Once I saw the hanger I knew I was in the right place. It didn't occur to me to heat the hanger to bend it. I used a heat gun to bend both corners to get it long enough for a 6 gallon carboy. I'm happy I found this, so tired of home brewers getting gouged.

These are a great idea. I used the coat hanger design and the hoover vac seems to be doing the trick! Thank you for making this video

This super old video just showed up in my recommendations since I have been doing a lot of research for wine making. Thank you so much for this trick! A bit late, but this is genius LOL!

I used a white plastic coat hanger as you demonstrated and a heat-gun to bend it into the desired shape. Works great, and is a lot quicker than using a long stir spoon which I usually use.

I like the hanger idea. While you were talking about the wine bottle degasser, I saw the spray bottle behind you and I thought I knew where you were going. I guess I'll have to try that one myself. The vacuum cleaner is a good idea, but you really don't want to pull a good vacuum on a carboy, especially one with wine in it.

How much negative pressure can an average vacuum generate? I’m gonna do it. Good man for thinking out of the box and sharing! 😊

I love when I find people who really take the time to use their brains. Clicklc1500, for the longest time I have had issues with my wine and degassing. I will definately use the Vacum cleaner. The question that come to my mind are; How long do you run it for? How many times?- How can we really tell the wine has been fully degassed? - thank you for your answers. - AWSOME TIPS

thanks dude, i like your video. i made a plastic coathanger using the heat from the stoves oven burner. and it was too hot too mold it over the stove. Putting the hanger i boilig water is much better idea. and what is this person talkin about below? can the vaccum actually cause too much pressure in the carboys and be dangerous? I dont understand why a vaccum pulling air and C02 out of the carboy could be bad, but i thought id ask anyways

I'm just not getting the vacuum cleaner part. Am I putting the vacuum on the suck in mode or the suck out mode like blowing up pool toys? Is the part attached to the end of the vacuum going into the top of the carboy touching the wine? Thanks
@Clicklc15004 жыл бұрын
You want to suck the air out. That will create a negative vacuum which will pull the co2 out of the wine.

I finally hooked up my big push house hold vacuum up to my carboy and nothing happened! the vacuum cleaner had good suction but when i attached it to the carboy it showed no bubble activity at all. But when i lifted the hose off the carboy i noticed the wine moved a bit so i know it was creating a vacuum in there. I just dont understand how your little vacuum is working but this big vacuum isnt working. Any tips ? Do you know how much Horse power you vacuum has ?
@Canuckcancanuck12 жыл бұрын
it fermented normally and i let it ferment to dry , the gravity is .991 which is plenty dry. It smells and tastes great, I finally finished degassing the 6 gallons of it , but it took me a good 2 and a half weeks to finish degassing. I just didnt understand why the vacuum didn't work. IS your vacuum very powerful?

Thank you for the compliment. You'll know when you've got all the CO2 out when it stops bubbling when you put the vacume on it. I usually do it three times over the coarse of a week. Good Luck!

@Clicklc150012 жыл бұрын
You may have other issues. How long has it been fermenting? Whats the gravity reading? You may have gotten a wild yeast in there. Is it getting vinagary smelling?
@Clicklc150012 жыл бұрын
Your quite welcome. I Imagine the suction could implode the carboy but the amount of pressure pushing out on the carboy by the liquid is much greater than any counter pressure you could put on it with the vac.. This is just my opinion, suck at your own risk. :)

I'd like to begin by congratulating you on some nice ingenuity. I really like the first idea with the hanger....I remember reading that before, but nice application in hot water, etc.... My only concern would be a possible taste impact from the wet-dry shop vac. I've had some pretty nasty stuff in there and wouldn't want the slightest bit of taste, smell, whatever. Have you ever experienced any taste influence from the shop vac?
@Clicklc150014 жыл бұрын
The air in my shop vac only goes in one direction. I do have two vac's though. One for dirty jobs and one for smaller cleaner jobs. Put a couple gallons of hot water and some oxy-clean in your vac to clean it out if your concerned. Thanks for the comment!

I've been using the hanger mod for a couple years now, wish I would have started before buying the stainless tool, which is difficult to get into and out of the carboy. I've also tried the vacuum seal machine, which works... well, it does produce a vacuum and you do get bubbles. Does anyone know what vacuum pressure we're trying to produce? What is enough?

The suction produced by a vacuum cleaner is negligible compared to that produced by a "wine saver" type pump so I wouldn't think that method works particularly well. Despite the name, vacuum cleaners are optimized for high air flow - not a high vacuum.

how long would a 5 gallon bucket take to degass on its own with lid off?

You might want to keep small critters out, so put a screen or cloth over the top.

OHH ALSO , how long do you degas for with you vacuum cleaner ? Iv been just using the the plastic coat hanger everyday for 10-20 minutes for 2 weeks but its still very fizzy when i shake it in a test jar, and when i take the lid off the test jar you can hear the pop sound so i know theres pressure building up. If the vacuum cleaner works better i may just go buy a nice shop vac!

Put a small rubber ball in the air lock you have taped to your vacuum cleaner and you should end up with a check valve that you can pull a vacuum and the ball will seal it off so you can shut off the vacuum cleaner and it will hold the vacuum. Do it a couple times over a couple days and it should be good.
@Clicklc150016 жыл бұрын
It grips fine. Just used a chock to tighten it to the drill. No slipping what so ever. Good luck

Aren't you concerned about imploding your carboy using a vacuum cleaner or a shop vac? You can't control the amount of vacuum that you put on the carboy when using those.

A vacuum cleaner is not adequate. Wile it has a high CFM, it will not pull/hold enough mmHg/Pa to have any real effect. Really your better off getting a cheap refrigeration or medical vacuum pump. You also might want a gauge or regulator for safety reasons (You don't want to exceed 20 mmHg on a glass carboy, otherwise you risk implosion)
