It's amazing how he plagiarized 90% of the video but completely missed the point of it being directed towards people trying to become professional VAs and not commentating gameplay with memes

People can commentate gameplay with USB, 3.5mm, XLR, it doesn't matter. For professional voice acting, however, you need to have XLR and a decent mixer/preamp. Weegee absolutely missed the point of Soulbrotha's video.

Yeah, if you're an amateur or hobbyist KZbinr, there's no point buying all this, but if you're a VO artist, then it is absolutely necessary to have good gear and good technique to maintain suspension of disbelief or if you just want to have professional grade sound in general.

A big thing I think you should've touched on was how Weegee is misapplying the information that soulbrotha is trying to get across. SBN3's video is about becoming a professional online voice actor, which actually does require professional equipment. Weegee is taking that and applying it to general use cases on KZbin, which is just fucking stupid. The Yeti is fine for what most people use it for, namely consumer level recording. No shit it's not a professional quality microphone, it's not meant to be used for that.
@smightlp
@smightlp 7 жыл бұрын
It's a $80 - $100 USB mic that sounds nice for the price. The most offensive thing to me about the vid is him artificially adding in buzzing. It is very obviously manufactured noise; can't you insult the yeti without lying about it? Must not be that bad, if this is the case.
@fyrexia
@fyrexia 7 жыл бұрын
Weegee said it was fine for general use in the video, are you sure you fully went through it? He also said the snowball gave the exact same quality as the blue yeti, which is why he said it was terrible.

Also notice that Weegee took a completely different message from the initial video and hammered away at that. The original video while harsh implies that the Blue Yeti is a starting point that is alright but pales in comparison to more professional setups you should be using for clear voice acting. Weegee just wants to shit on the blue yeti because it's a popular choice for casual consumers.

bobvids THIS. I love my Yeti. I primarily use it for voice communication in video games and the occasional little video or song project I do for fun. It does everything I, the casual consumer wants it to do. Also a foam wind screen on it works wonders.

The original video being soulbrotha's. Weegee restates a lot of content from the original video soulbrotha made, but changes the context and wording of it to carry a different, far more uninformed message. It's the difference between saying "A van is way better for multi-person road trips than a small convertible, but the convertible is a nice luxury vehicle for smaller groups and just solo cruising" because you want people going on trips to have good mixture of comfort and mileage, and someone else seeing that advice and taking it as "All convertibles fucking suck don't buy them" What weegee is doing goes beyond just wanting a clickbait title, he's using clickbait and plaigarism to phrase his own uninformed elitism in a way that seems professional.

But not in the video. Or the title of the video. Or at the top of the description, only at the very bottom. Also, if he's acknowledging that the other video exists, then his video has no reason to exist. He could've just tweeted a link to the original video to the same educational effect. He wanted people to think he made the video script himself. There's simply no other interpretation.

Only after being called out that the video was plagiarism, and doesn't give full credit to it regardless. And even if he did, he still basically copied the entire thing so he could regurgitate information worse at significantly lower effort than attempting to do it himself. Basically that doesn't even remotely give him a pass.

What I really want to know is why "Why the Blue Yeti Sucks" was plastered on my recommended tab as furiously as it was. It was the same with that fairly random "Polygon is wrong about the new Asscreed looking shit" or whatever a few months back. It certainly felt like the typical old clickbait and I suppose that's why KZbin tried so hard to get me to watch it. I suppose I check a few of the boxes for their systems to insist on me watching this tripe. I really want to see the under-the-hood, behind-the-scenes stuff, like the end of a Telltale episode.
@mjc0961
@mjc0961 7 жыл бұрын
Ebeeto Yeah it got plastered all over my recommended as well, and I never watch microphone videos, and I have not watched anything by "Weegee" before. KZbin always seems to promote the clickbait though. When it's not this, it's videos with tits and/or ass in the thumbnail with implications that you'll get to see more, but of course you won't, that's not allowed on KZbin.

Not sure how overly complex the recommended video algorithms are, but I suspect it has something to do with videos frequently watched by users that watch the videos that your frequently watch. It was all over my recommended videos too, but it was after it got quite a few views. I've been a fan of soulbrotha for years so when the controversy came out, probably a lot of his subs watched that video. This mightve boosted it in my recommended videos.

Heck, I would even suggest that if you're just trying out KZbin, dont even get a Yeti. A 30 dollar dynamic mic (like a SM58 clone) and a cheap UMC22 interface can sound great with the proper post processing. You'd be amazed what a little bit of EQ, compression and reverb can do. Been using a Behringer XM8500 and UMC22 for over a year now and everyone i speak to thinks I have an expensive setup, while my setup costs arout 60 dollars in total if you factor in the mic stand and pop filter

I understand what you are saying about a flanger, but I am not so sure that would actually be the case. My guess would be he either had an incorrect setup or had some interference. Just a theory though. I have noticed that while working on making waveforms for instruments from scratch (I try to make music sometimes) that sometimes having even the slightest microsecond of interference or in my case, a slight drop or increase in audio, can instantly decrease audio quality.

Context is also important, which Weegee missed the point on. SoulBrotha's coming from the context of professional voice acting and WeeGee is coming from a context of voice overs for videos or streams. It's an important difference since one really does require the highest quality sound output while VOs really just needs to be serviceable, something a decent USB mic like the Blue Yeti can totally fulfill, especially with some work in Adobe Audition or Audacity

Okay so I wasn't the only one who thought something wasn't right with the Blue Yeti's "Audio sample" in Weege's video. I'm pretty sure if a mic that costs $100+ is prone to background buzzing/whining it wouldn't be as widely used as it is on KZbin or have any good reviews at all. Was his mic busted or did he add it in thinking he could get away with it?

Now that WeegeeTheGod's terrible practices are out in the open, I feel it's time to tell my experience with him and how he took advantage of me. He requested a 3DS Capture Card from anyone that could provide it. One of my friends got in contact with me to inform me of Weegee's predicament. I messaged Weegee himself to discuss the details of how I would send the device to him and Weegee even stated that he would give me a video shoutout because of how much I'm helping him out. As a small channel, this is a huge deal as getting exposure from someone like that is extremely helpful. In the end, I sent the device to him and I have have heard nothing since and any attempts at reaching out to Weegee has failed. He jipped me out of a sold out device and just because he's a big KZbinr he thinks he can get away with taking advantage of the little guy. This is just the shorter explanation of what happened and I can provide all the screenshots and receipts if need be. EDIT: Here are the screenshots! imgur.com/gallery/iTOXw

Hell I know this sounds retarded and probably a bad idea but has Keemstar on DramaAlert called out Weegee recently? (is the channel even still alive lol?) You need to get it out, don't wait and hope for the best, you need to get in contact with people looking to 'expose' Weegee. If they made a video on the Blue Yeti copy and paste and also the gamecapture shit and ignoring you, that's a pretty strong argument of its own! If you add anything else he done you will have justice done. I wish you luck, and I'll be sure to pass on the video whenever it comes out (be it from you or a bigger drama youtuber)

Beyond the plagiarism, it's unfortunate that KZbin rewards worthless clickbait. It's a race to the bottom. More and more of the "recommended" videos are just empty-headed clickbait and top-10 lists. Each individual video is rewarded with more views, but the long-term effect is to degrade the quality of KZbin overall.

I was working on a video to counter some of Weegee's points myself, but after this flawlessly executed response (along with calling out the blatant plagiarism that I was honestly unaware of) I really don't need to anymore. Great work! Also all the problems I had with Weegee's video were basically fixed in soulbrothanumbuh3's video. Go figure, huh. Finally, that ending was deliciously savage.

I got the opposite impression from it, that the additional features of the Yeti weren't worth the price difference between it and the Snowball for casual users. There's several things you can take Weegee to task for (this video and many comments here do just that), but the message I got from Weegee was that the Yeti has no market: that anyone looking to buy a Yeti could spend the same, or less, money and get better audio equipment. I'd actually been thinking of buying a mic when I'd come across Weegee's video, so it was a bit fortuitous for me. And I did decide to buy a Snowball in the end. I'm very happy with it and don't have any thoughts of replacing it with a Yeti or a "real" setup (in my circumstance, both for my needs and my budget the extra features of the Yeti make no sense). But I think Weegee is wrong, the Yeti does have a market; and people aren't stupid for buying it. In short, you're buying simplicity. All the work has been done for you when you buy a Yeti, you don't need to learn about audio tech, or learn how to balance/mix sound to get good quality audio. Not everyone has the time or ability to buy, and properly use, a more cost effective setup. But anyone can buy a Yeti and get good audio. The money "wasted" on a Yeti isn't wasted at all, you're paying for someone else to do all that work for you, and to put it together in a single, simple package.

"They all colorize audio in their own unique ways" aaagh That's not what "colorize" means. You can't just replace words with longer ones that sound similar.
@tjb0607
@tjb0607 7 жыл бұрын
colorize does make sense though. For example, color is what's used to describe the type of noise - white noise, brown noise, pink noise, etc. based on the frequencies.
@KingBlonde

Colourise is a common term in the audio world for that exact thing.
@rubberbandiv
@rubberbandiv 7 жыл бұрын
"Colorize" is used almost exclusively to talk about adding color to black and white film; it's exceedingly rare to see someone use it to mean "color" (the verb) in general. In fact, the word essentially does not appear in the English language until the early 80s, when colorizing black-and-white film became a common thing. You can check that for yourself using Google Ngrams, which can show you how often a word appears in the Google Books database. Given that WeeGee is plagiarizing someone else's words, I highly doubt that he's deliberately this specific moment to engage in literary play by using a word unconventionally - it's far more likely that he's using a word that sounds fancier to his ears because otherwise it'd sound too much like the source material. This is pretty much precisely how badly-plagiarised text always ends up - writing which was simple and clear and perfectly fine ("any piece of equipment you run your mic through will color the audio in some way") gets gussied up into a lumbering monstrosity of cliche and poor word choice ("they all colorize audio in their own unique ways"). Also, we don't say that a mic "colors" the sound because it introduces red/white/pink noise - "color" there is being used as a synonym for "affect" or "alter" - in the same way that this video has negatively colored my opinion of WeeGeeTheGod.
@rubberbandiv
@rubberbandiv 7 жыл бұрын
Really? I've only ever heard it in the context of colorizing old films (and could only find that context online, plus the word doesn't really show up until the early '80s, which is right around when colorizing film took off). But I'm no audio engineer, so I could very well be wrong.

Paul Hemphill colourize is at the very least used quite often in audiophile vocabulary, where an amp could be described to add a lot of colour to the sound, which really just means changing the sound to be warmer, colder, etc

These sorts of things are becoming distressingly common. Earlier there was a "popular" wow YT who made top ten lists who was then exposed by another one because all he was doing was taking other peoples/sites/YT's list, and rereading them, and calling them his own. He then tried to act like he didn't know it was wrong to steal, and then deleted his account once the backlash hit, and kept all the money. It's disgusting what they can get away with.

Nah the guy I was thinking of was called like warcraft bible, or canned beans wow. I believe another YT named kakio did a video like Bob's exposing his plagiarism. After he was exposed he made a joke of an apology which he put up adds for because he knew people were going to watch it, and then said he was tired of the hate, and stopped making videos once he saw people unsubbed, and jumping ship. So he stopped and kept all that money despite all that plagarism.

Weegee using that exact same "announcer voice" that TotalBiscuit and Markplier (and I'm sure tons of other KZbinrs) have been doing for YEARS. You just throw your voice into the deeper end of its spectrum and over-enunciate, and I'm sick of it.

Announcer voice is a voice technique that is used to flatten and minimize the regionality of someone’s voice. It’s quite useful if you want people from other regions to easily understand what you are saying, but if you don’t have practice using it, it sounds extra robotic.

Plus, Soulbro actually sounds good with his recordings. Weegee sounds all muddy and there's an occasional pop here and there. Even ignoring quality, Weegee just sounds fuckin' annoying with his radio announcer voice. He doesn't do it in a way that makes it pleasant to listen to, unlike Soulbro. Soulbro, despite coming off as even more mean-spirited than Weegee at times, is still much better to listen to because of his high quality, and his coherency, unlike Weegee, who doesn't even know what he's talking about.
