"Fungi love the dark, and one day we may be able to turn this fact against them to fight fungal infections. " from a 2005 study looking for defenses against fungi. That is why you see the different infected pulling away from the sunlight and why the clickers are in the dark buildings because they don't love the sun and clickers use echo location for their surroundings. This fact kinda plays into the fireflies whole "if you're lost in the dark follow the light".

His daughter (Sarah) wasn't infected. She reacted as anyone would when someone reflects sunlight into your eyes. What you should have been paying attention to is that the the boy with the shiny bracelet was twitching his arm.
@Kevster921

This is the answer. He was right to notice the scene - it's one of the first indications that something bad is about to happen - but he paid attention to the wrong kid. Still, at that point you have no idea about the twitching, so it's easier to catch on a second watch. Sarah was concerned about if she had been infected or not, since she did go into the city to fix the watch. But in this episode, we see that it was most likely through grain/flour that the fungal infection spread. And as many others have pointed out before, nobody in the Miller family consumed flour-based food in the entire first episode. They even made a point of showing them avoiding it (biscuits, pancakes, birthday cake, etc.etc.) throughout the episode. So Sarah was probably fine, and died for nothing.

@@NATHANIELJELKS-PLANEJANE-FAN I said "she died for nothing". It means that the soldier didn't need to shoot her, because she was not infected. There was no reason for her to die, which makes it even more sad that he shot her.

Everything can be interpreted differently by different people, even though I think you're certainly following the director's thoughts about that specific scene. The show certainly tries to make us fear that Sarah may end up getting infected (as a red herring since she'll end up getting shot instead), since she's spending time around infected people and in the city. The dialogue in the car scene makes it very clear. So reaching this conclusion can't be so wrong haha

It's one of those things you pay more attention to from a second viewing. Or maybe if you had the opportunity to play the game. As someone who has played the game, upon nothing the twitch, my first thought was that's not a good sign. It was a nice little touch for fans of the game. And a subtle foreshadowing for the lucky newcomers.

Holy crap! I didn't even think about that. Great point! I've not played the game, but I'm familiar with it, in general, just from being a gamer. I'd seen the first part (up to losing Sarah) in reactions and such, and I knew the general premise of the game, but that's it. So I'm mostly going in fresh, especially starting with this episode, which is great!! But, to your point...That's so weird. Everyone, literally every gamer, HATES escort quests in games. They're always tedious, the escortee always moves at a different pace (usually slower than you), makes stupid decisions, and it so helpless, they die when a stray alley cat jumps on them. But TLoU turned that entire trope on it's head, and made a masterpice...that's pretty brilliant. I'm really looking forward to the game coming out on PC in March. I owned a PSOne, but never really got into consoles after that...PC Master Race all the way. So I've been denied the opportunity to experience TLoU for all these years. And now, after watching, and LOVING this show so far, it'll be so cool to finally be able to experience it for myself, at long last. :)

To clarify, the light reflection on Sarah is a normal response, the emphasis on that scene was to show that her classmate’s hand was twitching (the first sign of infection). Its just mean the infection has already spread. As for the infected retracting when sunlight is on them. That’s just how some fungi would react to sunlight. They are more fungi than human at this point.
@adambalogh8728

In the game the fungi starts from a field but here to make more sense the infection starts from Jakarta, one of the largest flour producing places ever. Cause in the original the fungi originated from those kind of products just as here. Joel, Tommy and Sarah only managed to not get infected because of sheer luck, cause they didn't consume any of those products. No pancake, no cookies, no cake.
@MavenCree
@MavenCree Жыл бұрын
Sarah was not infected. The infection spread through flour. Yeast. Yeast is a fungus. Remember they didn't have pancake mix. Joel forgot the cake - they had no flour that day. The light from the other student's bracelet wouldn't you look up if a light was flashing in your eyes? (and that kid was shaking because HE was infected, btw). Sarah's neighbours were eating biscuits, and raisin cookies. Sarah WAS worried that she was infected because they'd said the city, but she wasn't. This episode shows it's the flour. And sunlight dries out fungus. That's why they were avoiding it.

The craziest detail I noticed was that the actors never ate anything with flour in the first episode. It spread through the flower from the flower mill in Indonesia. Sara wasn't infected. In this episode we find out that the fungus was spreading through the grain/flour. They ran out of pancake mix, Joel forgot to buy a birthday cake, and Sara didn't eat the cookies she made with Mrs. Sadler because they had raisins in them. Mr. Adler was feeding biscuits to his mother or mother-in-law and I presume they ate the cookies. The scientist from Jakarta said that flour was the perfect medium for the fungus, and flour is used worldwide. Then they show Ellie eating a chicken sandwich on rye. Ellie has never known the world before this happened. The infected aren't affected by light. The ones that were laying on the ground all turned over like a wave, to show that they are all connected.

Loving the reactions from you two. Your reaction to the first episode was my first intro to your channel, and I ended up binging a ton of your videos afterwards. Love the channel, and your reactions and commentary are so much fun to watch! Can't wait for you to continue watching. This episode was really fun to watch for many different reasons for me. I live in the city that they shot a ton of the show (Calgary, Alberta). Seeing all the city landmarks in the background, or realizing I drive on the overpass that Tess, Ellie and Joel were walking on was a very surreal moment. It was fun to see parts of the city be turned into the overgrown, strangely beautiful apocalypse that the Last of Us is known for. And I have to admit, the showrunners did a good job accurately depicting what life is like living in Alberta (I'm kidding... mostly anyway). Anyways, love the videos, and can't wait to see more!

Last of Us zombies are alive not dead. Fungus controls humas brains who are alive. So, the guy that was dead in the doorway wasn't going to hop up and attack them. The fungus needs a live host. So, you can actually kill these zombies by gun shots to the body. And if you noticed, they actually bleed out when you kill them.

The actors they had that played the clickers, were fans of the video game, so they imitated the ones from there, and they did a phenomenal job. They basically just let them do whatever because they knew fans of the game would know better than they did how the clickers behave. Finally a director and producers who understand how this should be done and listen to fans and creators of the source material. This show is going to be so good, depending on how they depict the rest. I have high hopes.

Dude, what? Sarah wasn’t infected. That scene was to tell us the audience that the infection was already spread. They showed you in the first episode the symptoms for the infection and twitching and coughing are two of them, that kid was twitching and another one was coughing. That’s why that scene. The infection spread through flour, in this episode they hinted even more at that and in the first episode Sarah didn’t had the rights ingredients to make pancakes so she made eggs instead, then the neighbor offered them biscuits, then the cookies and last Joel forgot to buy the birthday cake, that’s why they didn’t get infected. 18:50 Like she said, she never been outside of the wall so of course she is bad at this and she never seen a Clicker before, this was her first time. And I wish people stop it with the “SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD!” Shooting in the head is not easy like they do it on TWD, in here it was more realistic. There’s a reason why cops shoots at the torso, it’s the biggest part of the body and easiest to shot and they are trained. This is not a video game so him shooting at the torso when he was in stress was realistic and then he shot to the head when he was calmer and had a better shot. Especially these infected they move quick and twitch a lot (that’s why Tess miss that one shot, they twitch a lot) it would be almost impossible to hit them in the head. In TWD even when the main characters are running they hit them in the head, it’s ridiculous. I know the Walkers are slow but still…the infected are way more difficult and they are durable too, they can only die from one bullet with a shotgun to the head but they can’t with anything else, they are durable asf and they perfectly captured that in this episode.

Tess doesn’t get enough love… yes Joel’s beginning produced massive emotions, but Tess’s backstory was offscreen - she protected ellie the most from the start. Joel wanted to shoot her, tess wanted to teach her, keep her safe…and get their battery. Lol point being, tess, you nailed it and I thank you. If y’all ever listen to the official podcast you’d learn that Tess was a mother and wife. Both got infected. Killed the hubby, couldn’t go through with killing her young son (before understanding what the infected turn in to, ya feel) - so “save who you can save” line hit hard -knowing her backstory. Just my own feels… but Tess, you were undoubtedly the most underrated actor in this show. Period.

With regards to the whole 'fungus can live in flour?' thing? Absolutely!! I grew up as a farm kid, and in college I worked summers on a massive wheat farm (I went to school in central Washington, which is mostly wheat fields broken up very occasionally by small towns), and one of the biggest issues we had was dealing with various fungi (mostly molds and lichens) trying to grow on the wheat. Fungi LOOOOOOOVE grains!! So, to answer your (implied) question, yes, if tainted grain was shipped to Jakarta (the flour mill they're talking about is literally the largest one in the world, and it gets shipments from all over the world, then ships them back out, pretty much round the clock), processed, and shipped out, there would *DEFINITELY* have been fungi/fungal spores on the grain, and it would have been ground up into the flour. There's basically no treatment done to the grain, other than washing it and milling off the outer husks, so there's nothing in the process that would have killed fungal spores, because that would also have destroyed the grain, so the cordyceps spores would have shipped with the flour, and out into stores. Because, like the doctor said, flour would be the perfect substrate (ie a perfect environment for the fungal spores to wait, be safe, feed, and multiply). The timeline is probably a little iffy. They probably should have moved the prelude of this one to a few more days earlier, since would have taken time for the tainted flour to get all over the world, but even in 2003, international shipping methods were pretty speedy, so it's not *totally* unrealistic. Anyway, there's your horrifying thought for the day. :D

@@arklytte yeah it's all right, it's fiction not everything has to make sense for it to be good. Other thing to consider is that there are certain areas that after the first wave of infections occurs would be safer. Cold areas, and dry and hot areas. Alaska, northern Canada and deserts in the southwest should be hostile to the fungus. It's hosts and itself would die from the extreme temperatures , and it won't have water from the environment to feed on. So after the first chaos and after a couple of winters/summers, people should head north or head to the deserts. Places where it does not rain much should be safe from the fungus as it needs water to do it's thing.

The moment the Mycology specialist was made aware that the point of contamination occurred at a grain & flour manufacturing facility along with 14 potential missing carriers she pretty much was able to assess just how hopeless they're case was in trying to contain all of this. The fact that the fungus had already reached a food source as a potential means of transmission means there really was no telling how many potential carriers were already out in the entire city that were yet to surface, so bombing the city seemed to be the only logical solution to attempt to restrict the spread and the way in which that woman conveyed that info truly expressed just how dread she must have felt in that moment.

So it has been thought for a while, that cordyceps attaches to the brain of the insects it infects. Ant, wasps, butterflies, moths, etc. However there was a paper published in 2017 that uses AI to generate a map of what the inside of an insect effected by cordyceps might look like. The findings actually suggested that it actually might leave the majority of the brain alone, highjacking just the motor neurons themselves, and creating a kind of barrier that simply cuts off the brain from the rest of the body. The implication is that, if these insects have sentience to begin with, then it's possibly they remain sentient when infected, but simply have no control over what is happening. So - to make it even more horrifying, that would mean that if it infected humans like this - we would all be trapped in our bodies, unable to stop ourselves. If it affected our whole brain, we would still have an awareness, an experience of the world still, it would just be a different "us" in the driver's seat. If it did it this way, we would still be ourselves, still sitting in the driver's seat - only it's driving itself now. Like trapped in syndrome only your body isn't paralyzed. Absolutely. Horrifying.

The biggest bit of information from that opening scene eplaining the rapid spread of the infection around the world (this opening scene took place only two days before the opening Joel/Sarah scenes in episode 1) was not that 14 potentially infected people were missing, but that the fungus could be in the flour (and other grain) already shipped out to other countries. People were already consuming it in their morning pancakes... and biscuits... and cake.... and raisin cookies.... In the first episode, I don't think Sarah was really "reacting" to the light reflected off the kid's bracelet in class. Her attention was drawn to it. I think that was more about the kid twitching (the beginnings of the infection) than Sarah's reaction.

13:24 the first episode spent a lot of time showing us what the Millers did and didn't eat--they didn't eat food with flour. Sarah ate the same things Joel at and Joel's still here. Had Sarah survived the night, she likely would be around now like Joel and Tommy. Sarah was annoyed by her classmate's metal bracelet--his twitchy hand reflected sunlight into Sarah's eyes. Sarah was concerned because Nana Adler was infected and she spent several hours over at their home. No one knew what was happening or how it happened either--the news blamed it on a new "street drug" according to the broadcast Sarah was watching when Joel came home. 20 years later, they all likely found out what it was, given their knowledge of cordyceps now. The Mycologist's report likely found its way to WHO and the rest of the world--Boston was bombed, which was her suggestion to stop the spread. 13:38 I've seen others saying that too, but that wasn't the case in the game. They attack whenever in buildings, outdoors, night or day. It didn't matter. They weren't weakened by the environment. Fungi don't have an aversion to light in real life either, which is why I think it's weird to assume that the infected would. Not all fungi need sunlight as they don't produce photosynthesis like plants. That have a parasitic relationship with the environment, leaching off their hosts for substance. When they start to fruit (sprout) they start to give off spores looking for new hosts, and I think that's what we're seeing here 13:39. We'll have to wait and see what the live-action version is going to do with this mythos as it isn't exactly the same as the game, though it's very close. Mushrooms might favor dark and moist places, but if think of your own surroundings, I bet you can find places where they also thrive in sunlight too. 14:02 It's only been a day since she left with Joel and Tess. Her chicken sandwich was cooked. While we normally don't leave meat out in the States. I've learned that you can and it'll be fine. Places like Japan that have boxed lunches have cooked food that sits on shelves/tables all day and they're fine. You'd need to be cautious during hot and humid weather, but during weather with average to cold temperatures, you're good. 21:02 it happened in the museum when they were together. She got pinned by one of the clickers while Joel and Ellie got pinned by one--that's when it happened ='( This is also why she suddenly turned sour and testy towards the end. She wanted to hand Ellie off before she turned, and possibly have a little time with Joel too. 22:28 You lose Tess early on in the game too. Actually at this point in the story and she's infected in the same way, but here exit from the story is different. The live-action version is by far the worse one! Still, it fits with how they've changed the Cordyceps, as her death shows us more into their being. 23:47 I think better question is how many others were like her, but were instead killed because everyone's been conditioned to murder people that test red to save the many. Ellie's alive because of Marlene, and I think we'll get that backstory, so I'll keep quiet about that. There were nearly 8 billion people at the start of this problem. How long would it have taken to reduce that number significantly? No one used nukes, as they wanted humanity to survive, they napalmed the hell out of cities the world over. The number of infected surely skyrocketed, but you have to wonder if some third world countries or those isolated by water survive relatively unscathed. Anyway, I think it's safe to assume the world population is still somewhere in the millions and of those there are likely others that are also immune, but likely don't even know it--there's no test for that. Ellie was bitten and because of Marlene she lived and they learned that a person can survive a bite. This series is sooooo good. I'm so happy we have it, I'm going to miss it when it gone, but I'll enjoy the hell out of it while it's here.

13:19 the kid with the watch was infected because one of the symptoms is spasming and the kids hand was doing just that. Thus causing the light to reflect into Sarah's face and probably her eyes.

In real life the actual fungus has different "variants" each of them affects different types of insects. That's probably why in The Last of Us the one that affects humans is not affecting those little ducks and other animals. That specific one affects only humans specifically. Sarah was not infected. She was reacting to light the same way I would, if a random light was in my face I would try to look for the source of it. But maybe the kid with the shiny bracelet was infected, their arm was twitching a bit. Or maybe the kid was just tapping the table, I couldn't tell for sure if they were tapping on purpose or not. 🤷🏻‍♀️
