Fun Fact! The voice actors that performed the Male and Female Clicker sounds in the game are providing voice-over for them in the show. In the BTS, after the show, they mentioned that the stunt performers they used for the Clickers were fans of the game and captured the Clicker movements from the start.

18:39 The reason that they’re ducking or putting the glass between themselves and the clickers is because, while unable to see, the clicks are meant to function as a basic sort of echolocation. You want to have something between you and a clicker so that they can’t easily find you. It wasn’t represented in the gameplay of the first game, but very much was in the second.
@simonspoke
@simonspoke Жыл бұрын
It was also an easter egg for the fans, as the ducking and crouched movement was a direct representation of the sneak mechanic of the characters in the game.

The crazy part is there are blind people who can echo locate in real life. Literally they make click sounds and hear if there is any obsticle in front of them. The best of them can tell the general size, shape in front of them.

Jakarta is known for the largest flour mill in the world. It's pretty much confirmed at this point. Many people have pointed out in less than 30 minutes of the show Joel and Sarah avoid eating products with flour. No pancake mix, refused biscuits, left before the raisins cookies, and Joel forgot the cake. Breadcrumbs left by the writers that they just happen to avoid fungus in the flour imported from Jakarta. Lmfao. I watched the first episode with my mom who has never even seen the game. And she is enjoying it. Even though she is scared in the tense parts. She can't wait for episode 3. And she thought I was a fucking genius because before the episode started I said that Jakarta was mentioned in the first episode and had the world's largest flour mill and it possibly started there since Joel and Sarah literally avoided products with flour 4 tines in less than. 30 minutes of the show. And the very next episode starts in Jakarta.

Something that I feel was missing from other zombie apocalypse stories is that this story uses tension, not jump scares, to cause fear. It’s not a clicker showing up behind you suddenly. It’s seeing the clicker walk past you…and does it hear you?!
@JiReyAnimation
@JiReyAnimation Жыл бұрын
And there were so many perfect setups for jumpscares too, like when Joel is reloading his gun, they could've had the clicker jump at Joel right when he looks around the corner (like in the teaser trailer for the game), or when the doctor is inspecting the mouth of a dead infected, they could've had the body come alive at the last second. But the show doesn't do that, yet the audience is still scared because it's thought of it possibly happening that's scary.

Fun trivia here - A lot of the show was filmed in Calgary, Alberta! A lot of those landscape shots of the city are just the regular Calgary skyline with some added vines and ruin. The overpass they were on is a major road leading into downtown and they had it closed for a couple days for shooting. The owner of the watch shop in the first episode is a quite well known live theatre actor here in Calgary too! So definitely some green screen and added effects, but not as much as you may think!

I love how the fungus probably sensed the fungus spread inside Tess so it tried to connect to it via her mouth. With human perception that's a disturbing kiss, from the fungus' perspective it's just going for the most optimal way to connect and grow.

To answer your question Jay, clickers can't see, but they can feel people through echolocation - which is why it's important that they don't move around close to them and allow that noise to bounce off their bodies.

Even though I played the game and knew how it would go down I was somehow even MORE terrified in the museum scene than when I played the game! The fact that Neil Druckman himself directed this episode makes it even more perfect. And from the cold open showing how cordyceps originated in Jakarta it proves the Bread Theory was right. Which makes rewatching the pilot even MORE tense because you see how lucky Joel, Tommy and Sarah were that they didn’t get infected from eating any flour based foods. As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out. So they changed it to another scary fact about fungus which is that there are some species that grow so big that they can cover entire acres of rainforest in Brazil. So they added that instead of spores.
@thenecrosanct4906
@thenecrosanct4906 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they're using the mycelial network aspect of fungi, which makes it even more interesting (and scary). When Ellie mentioned spores in the episode my first thought was "If that was the case humanity would have been even more royally fucked than they already are". There would indeed be no one left, and the demise of humanity as a whole would go exponentionally faster the more infected humans there are. If you don't nip it in the bud you might as well give up because it's game over.

Just because Jay and Adam were like "why not dropping her off and go for Tommy!?" in the beginning. I felt like Joel and Tess are on different sides here. Tess sees Ellie and her bite mark for what it is, a miracle and a chance, she allows herself to hope. And there is Joel, who we know as someone who cut himself off from having any positive emotions because he is afraid of getting hurt again, just like it was with Sarah. Tess knows how to talk to Joel, so he will comply. Joel sees Ellies bite mark and still won't allow himself to hope and that's why he is like "she won't have a life", "it probably just takes longer for her to turn" and "we heard of miracle cures and shit like that, it's never true". Even when she got bit a second time and just shruks it off, Joel says "the first bite didn't but the second one will probably get her". He is so afraid of hurting again, that believing in the hope that Ellie presents is just impossible.

This isn't a zombie story, it's actually a love story. It's a story about the good things love can make people do, and the awful things it can make people do. Most "Zombie" stories are not actually about zombies. George Romero zombie movies were social commentaries, Dawn of the Dead for example is about consumerism, hence why it takes place in a mall.

If the point is the spread the fungus, why do they need to be violent?' We landed on that they don't. They're violent because we resist, but what if you don't? What does it look like if you just stand perfectly still and let them do this to you? Then we landed on this nightmare fuel."

For any sci-fi book readers who for some reason want to bask in more fungal horror, allow me to recommend the _Revelation Space_ series of novels. As part of the worldbuilding/backstory, human nanotech gets corrupted by an alien computer virus, and proceeds to eat+grow in fungal fashion. Entire cities get a goopy makeover. Humans with nanotech-enabled brain implants get .. weird. Oh, and to still be able to use technology at all, humans have to revert to larger, clunkier machines ... so it's very steampunk, too.

Mycology is amazing. The "antenna" looking stalks growing from infected people are flowering bodies that release spores. Mushrooms are the fungi's reproductive organs like flowers and the stalks are mushroom bodies. I never played the game, but I'm surprised there is no concern for airborne infection since spores are the way fungi propagate. It's probably explained in the game, but it does surprise me to see the everyone walking around without respirators (and exposed skin for that matter since spores can infiltrate that way too).

If they can't see, why are you ducking? Because echo-location works by reflecting sound/'clicks' off the surfaces they hit to give the 'emitter' an image in the minds eye. If the sound cannot reflect off you, because you aren't in the line of sound, they CANNOT possibly 'see' you to find you.

4:58 - The Doctor pulls the fungi from the woman’s mouth. Jay: “No! She has spaghetti!” Me: literally eating a mouthful of spaghetti when he said that. With mushrooms in it.

What I really appreciated about this episode was the scientist woman in the beginning. Once she saw what was going on and heard how the situation was after 30 hours, she made a very hard call. Especially when she asked to go home and be with her family. Firstly, this is not a politician or military specialist that makes ‘life or death’ calls on a daily basis, so saying ‘we need to bomb the shit out of the whole city’ is a big freaking deal. Secondly, she doesn’t even try to get herself out of the situation. She knows how bad it is and the possibility that she or her family might have been infected by the flour or grain ingested and that she wants to die with her family and not possibly contribute to the spread speaks volumes. Great episode and we thank you both for your discomfort for the content you bring us.

Yup!.... That scene in that lab morgue...., yup, I'm with you. BURN IT ALL!! ALL OF IT !! Heck, if we bring in the Cinder King dragon from Vox Machina, we'd be so gooooooood!

I grew up in Boston, and I really appreciated that the attention to detail that the show runners put into the geography of this episode. Fun fact, this episode for the most part takes place in the financial district of Boston by the Old State House
