As a career machinist and manufacturing engineer your explaination of a fixture is spot on. Good precision work is always a challenge, but that is what makes machining so fascinating. Ron Covell's channel has been invaluable for the insight that smart fixturing and jigs can turn seemingly impossible tasks into straightforward repeatable ones, resulting in way more professional results. I don't do anything nearly as impressive, but it has proved instructive when I 3D print parts that it's perfectly sensible to take a few extra minutes to model up a fixture or jig using the existing dimensions in order to do things like accurately locate and drill holes on parts or otherwise help with aligning multiple pieces for gluing, cutting, or other operations. It's easy to do and costs almost nothing, but our first instinct is always to take the "quick and easy" way out when a bit of extra time could have gotten a cleaner result with no risk of failure.

As a CNC programmer in a busy R&D shop, I have a large trophy shelf with some of my fancier fixtures which may or may not ever be used again lol. I fixtures are my best opportunities to invent. Also an opportunity to show the guys on the floor how I approach modular work holding which they don't generally have to do because I provide fixtures for their parts.
