As a soon to be retired ME and toolmaker, it does my heart good to see that this level of understanding and craftsmanship are still alive and well. When I was a mere apprentice some 50+ years ago, a journeyman tool maker, Sven who was himself 75 years old at the time, confided in me that he was afraid the art was dying and being replaced by automated equipment. Most folks nowadays don't appreciate the level of precision that can be achieved with simple tools and has been for centuries. Thank you Chris for restoring my faith. Somewhere Sven is smiling too.

Mesmerizing when presented in a well crafted production. Lighting style added a touch of depth; knowing you shops small footprint; quiet impressive. Of course, dramatizing the reflective nature of the material by add contrast. 👍

man, I can only dream of having such a detail oriented mind. I always get to a point in my projects where I'm just.. "close enough to call it good" and then I regret it for years afterwards. I just can't visualize the dimensions and maintain that vision. Always amazing to watch you work.
@jackpijjin4088Күн бұрын
As someone who also makes things and obsesses over details... don't feel bad, don't regret it. It's better to be "good enough" than to be super nitpicky perfectionist, because more often than not the outcome is being unable to enjoy your project and ultimately being burnt out over it.

I'm a professional clock repairman and getting into clockmaking as well. I've also dabbled with the trades in tool and die and mechanical design. There's definitely a clockmaking way of construction and an industrial way of construction, they're quite different but both are certainly adequate. It's quite interesting to see the difference between the typical construction of a dial indicator and the one you're making. This one definitely screams a clockmaker made this lol but it has those hints of industrial mechanical design. It really is like watching an artist grab inspiration from multiple different avenues. Very nice

Great video, as always your skills are at a very high level. I worked making machines for car plants, the only things that had to be within 1 mm were the NC blocks and locating pins for the steel. We used lasers to tell us what needed to be shimmed, by how much and in what direction. You just can't do that when your making something so small.

man, this guy is a genius, he has the creativity and foresight, to plan ahead, make the mechanism one way, and to demonstrate another way by retrofitting the previous way to ruby bearings. I have been following you for the last few years since the antykthera mechanism and I just looked you up, and I haven't found anything about who you are (I'm guessing that's on purpose) I was imagining you were someone in your 50s 60s with your nice deep baritone voice, and immense experience and knowledge, am I somewhat right, or I'm sorely mistaken? congrats for what you have achieved so far, and I wish you all the best for your future endeavours! I really like your editing style and music choice as well :) I asked about this in another video, but if you see this, is the antykthera series done, or set aside? sorry if I missed something

Not having done any of this, I would be concerned that peaning over the locating pins would also tend to drive them in just a little bit further, which might affect the locating function. I presume that to do this 'right' is largely a matter of technique where the process involves moving the pin material to the side more than down. But that's likely to take me a few years to get right. :-) Looking great.
@ClickspringКүн бұрын
You are correct, the peening does indeed very slightly send the pins a little deeper, which affects the fit although not the location. The trick is being aware that this is going to happen and keep it in mind regarding the feel of the fit prior to the peen. Brass is such a beautifully malleable material, even a slightly tight fit will tend to give a little after time. Great to have you watching and commenting mate :)
