Did you know that psychologists often specialise working with specific client groups? Every psychologist has their preference for what clients they see. Over the last two years of my training (and decade of work experience), I've helped a diverse range of people. I find all client groups fascinating and wonderful to work with, however there are some client groups I avoid seeing for certain reasons that I'll unpack in this video.
Quick Disclaimer
There are no "good" or "bad" client groups - it's a privilege to do this important work with clients, no matter what the problem is. However, since psychologists often specialise when they find their niche, this means there are groups of clients they choose to specifically work with and groups they do not see.
The field of psychology is extremely broad and there are so many areas to specialise in. But this is why it's also an incredibly rewarding and exciting field to work in. If you're studying psychology or if you're just curious about this profession, use this video as a guide to get a better sense of what 'behind the scenes' really looks like.

I absolutely love hearing this. I often watch other psychs vlogs, and find myself comparing myself to them and wondering how they cope. It's really affirming to hear we all have our challenge areas. Thanks, as always

I honestly think teenage me would have been terrified if he'd have bumped into present me haha, only because I was a very nervous kid, I never would have believed I could achieve as much as I have. Loved the video as always and I hope you and Ji, and your families (as well as the awesome community you're building here online) had a nice time over Easter weekend:)

Great thoughts. I have been thinking that I don't want to work with kids under 18, but I haven't known if you get a choice on what demographics you get to work with? Also do you have any tips for undergrad students who are interested in clinical psychology? (I'm in honours/grad dip adv) I know it is elitist but that is the work I find most interesting. Particularly with being able to diagnose neurodiverse populations and support their care + trauma is fascinating too.

If you do a clinical masters, you’ll probably need to do a placement with kids - but working in private practice allows you to decide who you want to work with 😊 My main tips would be: focus on grades - prioritise your honours/advanced grad diploma year (I’m wishing you all the best!!). If a door closes and you don’t get, don’t give up - just keep putting one foot in front of the other. It’s a long journey but it’s so worth it and clinical psychology is fascinating - you have a lot to look forward to with your career and the areas you’re interested in are very relevant - you’ve got this and a massive thank you for your support with the channel!! 🫶

Thank you for your reply@@kathleenanne! your response was very heartwarming. It's been stressful to work out whether to prioritise grades or work experience? I feel like it is too hard for me to prioritise both at once! I don't know how people do it.

I recommend focusing on grades - once they’re set, you can’t change them - but you can always get more work experience ❤ I’ve also spoken to a few universities who’ve said they put more focus on academics/personality rather than work experience to make it fairer for new graduates 🎓
