I wasn't too sure after my first viewing, but afterward, it has now stuck with me for days and I've reconsidered my first opinion. I actually now qualify It as pretty awesome: this music, the colors, the intrigue, the cinematography, the sexy girls. It definitely qualifies as an "art" film, for sure!

yeah. I think NWR had the approach that the cinematic experience is more than the story. there are barely any "big budget" films like that so I was pumped, and really enjoyed it
@manofmywords2408 жыл бұрын
no one goes to a Nicolas Refn movie for a story though.. they just want to see visual story telling, with nice colors, with the cinematography and soundtrack

One does not simply go to a NWR film without seeing lesbian necrophilia.
@TiborCsuprik8 жыл бұрын
For me there was definately a story in there...
@CBItalian047 жыл бұрын
I think the story was more symbolic and underlying than obvious and "you-don't-have-to-think"-like. It was the transformation of goodness and purity, and youth, in Jesse, into narcissism, envy and jealousy that is the world of beauty, and what the women of that world will do to get what another has.

My favourite movie at the cinema, so far. It was an event. More than a movie. It made me breathe to the beat of the music & visuals. Saw it 18 times. Spent over £400 on...hotel stay over 2 days one time...another time a hire car for a week...just to travel to cinemas still showing it when my nearest one stopped 💋😍🔥🔥🔥.
@jessymicek26488 жыл бұрын
True the dialogue could have been better, but the story, the underline theme is more than just "eh". If you watch some interviews with NWR, you can hear what he was going for by telling this story. Jesse is the naive, goodness, and pureness that a place like L.A. and the modeling industry literally consumes and corrupts. In very aspect of the film, she's surrounded by the worst of the world, until it eventually awakens within her and thus becomes her demise... yet we know nothing of her back story except that her mother called her dangerous. The necrophilia scene is a perfect example of how something "beautiful" yet completely lifeless and empty still has importance (sexual in this case) in our society. He shows how women, especially "lose value as they age" and even trying to "fix" imperfections with surgery leaves you even uglier. This is definitely a movie that makes you think, forcing you to read into what you're watching.
@aliciawoodfine88428 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with this comment. I knew what he was going for and I did get that from the film, but yes the dialogue could have been much better. I had a really hard time figuring out what it was that I didn't care much for with this film (the soundtrack definitely isn't one) and I suppose it is the dialogue. I didn't dislike the movie, but I wouldn't say I fully enjoyed it either though.
@semmerson308 жыл бұрын
Jessy Micek I read an interesting theory about the dialogue that suggested it was so supposed to be stiff and abstract, mirroring the fake world in which it was spoken. The dialogue was noticeably more naturalistic and 'real' in gritty, down to earth scenes such as ones with Keanu Reeves' character - so I think it's deliberately like that to prove a point
@Toastsandy7 жыл бұрын
the dialogue was perfect for what it waz.
@andrewohler31984 жыл бұрын
Even beyond that there were massive biblical and just historical allusions that push onto that theme. The ending has much more depth than people realize. Ruby is a VERY clear reference to Elizabeth Bathory and Also I believe Jesse is a reference to Jezebel, the painted woman in the Bible. Thus being pushed to her death only to be eaten by a pack of wild dogs

If there is one movie I would think of where the music has the biggest impact for the movie to bring it to the next level it's Neon Demon.

Yeah, if Michael Mann had weird sexual fetishes.
@mryamada-u7n8 жыл бұрын
Mann's films are very clinical and precise; Winding's are dreamlike and ephemeral. Don't mistake me, they're both excellent in their own respects, but I don't see the similarity.

He probably meant the visual style
@travisspazz16247 жыл бұрын
Maybe Mann mixed with Lynch.
@v-trigger61373 жыл бұрын
I mean, Mann is one of the guys who pioneered the modern neo-noir genre (the synth music with neon visual aesthetic package came from his movies). so it only seems obvious, that Refn might have took some notes from his movies, even if their movies are nothing alike (aside from the nihilistic characters). then again Safdie brothers movies are nothing alike either, and they are a huge Mann fans, and you can see that Mann influence in them. just like how you can see Tarantino's influence on PTA's early movies

@METACOUSTIX28 жыл бұрын
If I was to make my watchlist of three last Refn films, I'd start with Drive cause it has the most action in it, then continue with Neon Demon cause of its mysterious sexuality and synthetic touch of weirdness(?), and end up with Only God Forgives due to it's absolutely enigmatic atmosphere and rather ambient-ish slo-mo scenes that literally make it hard to keep awake while you're alone at night watching it.
