Elle fanning's acting is just breathtaking in this scene. She makes Jesse look enchantingly innocent yet slyly confident at the same time, especially when she's just sitting in her chair amongst the other girls waiting for her group's turn.

The guy who plays the fashion designer too. His emoting through the whole scene really drives home just how ENCHANTING Jessie is when it come so modeling. Even when he snaps out of his combination of interest, admiration and lust, to go back to business and ask for her card, only to literally have his breathe taken away when she walks. The actor did a REALLY good job of what could have easily been a hammed up scene.

The whole film revolved around her being innocent, yet someone who secretly knows what they are doing as they move up the ladder of opportunity across these circles. Girls do this all the time and then play the victim card at the end of the line.

Jessie (Elle) has the beginning of bags under her eyes, wrinkle lines on her cheeks, a gap slightly too side b/w her nose and mouth, a slight hunch in her back, and shoulders that droop, which makes her neck look slightly thicker at the base. That actress is a beauty, but she’s far from being the greatest beauty. Whereas Sara has perfect facial features and is thinner and taller with perfect posture. Putting Elle in white underwear and looking at her as if she was the fairest of them all doesn’t cut it. They needed to have another actress portray Sara to make Jessie stand out. Unless they were going with the idea that Jessie is a natural enchantress by nature who’s unaware of what she is. That makes her more innocent, which enhances the enchantment, so people who see her are mesmerized and naturally drawn to her. It’s as if the fashion designer is looking and feeling, but not actually seeing, what’s in front of him. His assistant is equally mesmerized.

It kind of oddly adds to the innocence of her and her observation skills. It felt like she was noticing the squeaks and slams of the others as well and trying to identify why and then not do whatever caused it. When she initially turned and started to walk I noticed there was a bit of a more relaxed flow to her turn and step that wasn't there with the others.

I once had an audition where the people at the table talked amongst themselves throughout my entire audition aria. When I got done, they said, "Thank you" without even looking up. I found out later that they had already cast one of their regulars in the role, but they had to still go through the charade of holding auditions. I had flown from the Midwest and stayed overnight in a NYC hotel, all on my own dime, just to attend that audition. Good times.

One thing I've learned over the years is that capitalism does this to every industry. You make paperclips? It's in your best interest to become a moral crusader for the importance of paperclip creation. Nothing in the universe is more important than making paperclips, no object, person, or concept can be valued higher. Making paperclips is curing cancer, and we expect nothing but the best from our employees, and we won't even take a second look at your application if you have any less than 20 years in this industry, and you live and breathe paperclips. If you make it to the interview and we find out you're not subscribed to Paperclips Monthly, I don't care how talented you are, we're kicking you out right there.

I love this scene because it perfectly encapsulates the intended catharsis of the film. The obsession/predation of innocence in hopes of eventually corrupting it. Sarah's character has been in the industry a while and was initially in Jessie's position before the industry inevitably corrupted and mutated her "purity" (which is really code for naivete). This is evident by her lack of preparedness and experience before her walk. In any other field of work, this would deter potential employers, but in this example, it works to her benefit because lack of experience and know-how means she is more susceptible to being taken advantage of. Jessie is the object of adulation by the designer in this sequence because he sees her as the proverbial "new toy" to play with. He is a creep. Beautiful visual storytelling implies he used up Sarah's "purity" last season and therefore her "value". Because she is no longer as easily manipulated, he has lost interest in her, on to the next poor ingénue. Abbey Lee's beautiful portrayal of Sarah displays the character's disillusionment with her perceived value in an industry she loves but is consistently abused by. Jessie and Sarah serve as personified representations of beauty before and after it is corrupted by obsession and predation. One woman is not better than the other in terms of beauty or grace. They are products of a prejudiced and deeply problematic industry that inevitably destroys the very thing it covets. This is also visually displayed by all of the black and brown models being few and far between and tucked away in the background. The film highlights the grotesque status quo estimation of beauty in the fashion industry which is guided by the larger discriminatory and sexist societal perspectives on a person's value.

Jesse replies with “I don’t exactly think I’m his *type*” and then Gigi snaps “why? You’re very masculine”. Sarno was simply enthralled by her appearance, like most people in the film. And just like that, all the societal admonishments against objectiving women's bodies and using the male gaze go out the window, What an industry!
