I am so looking forward to this series! Love this, and damn, Nail in the Coffin is so good! One of the advantages that many people forget to point out about Eminem is that he's funny. He can create the songs in a way that makes people laugh out loud, even if they are not originally on his side of the battle. But things like "you'll be all over the street like 50 Cent", or "why did you stop, you would make more money from crack than you do from rap" are just deliciously delivered, punches set up just right so people can't help but laugh at them and wince in sympathy at the same time. It's a talent that I have not yet found on any of the newer disses against him. At least not continuously, maybe one or two lucky punches. And Eminem still does it, even on a normal track. I could imagine it stemming from always being on the weaker side in rap-battles, always having to prove himself against people with much bigger fan-bases (originally! Not now, obvsly). One way to cope with that position is being able to make people laugh. If you have the audience laughing, you have a foot in the door. they're more sympathetic to you now, more interested in what you have to say, pay more attention for more jokes. Jimmy Rabbit did it in 8Mile and used it as a shield and also as a sword. Guard yourself and attack at the same time. Smart!

People always got it backwards-it wasn’t Slim you needed to be scared of, it was always Marshall. Shady (plus being white) in a way made everyone forget that he was from the hood. What made Em different is he always acknowledged his race but he never had to front about being from the streets. (And he’s never pretended to be IN the streets, big difference)

Like you said tho: Eminem was already getting famous cause of his SSEP that people like Jimmy from Interscope got several copies of the SSEP from different people cause he was told to listen to it and Busta Rhymes was losing his shit on how good it was. Benzino only went the route he did cause he was jealous of how successful Eminem became. But yeah Benzino did better than Game, especially since Benzino was enough for Eminem to create his overall hardest diss tracks.

I’ve watched a few of these battles from em. And I’m not like a “em fan” per say. I like his music and his lyrics and delivery are insane, but i don’t listen to him in a daily sense. But anyways, from what I’ve seen, Eminem completely destroys his opponents, he takes and breaks down bar for bar responses and turns up the heat. He will also heavily research his opponents and destroy them. And on top of that most of his opposing parties aren’t “themselves”, they portray an image of who they wanna be seen as, and Eminem on the other hand is so aggressively himself and nothing else that when they come at him there’s really only a handful of stuff to come at him for, most of which he will mention himself on his own songs. And alternatively em will just completely destroy the opposing parties image and persona with Insane delivery and punchlines like no other.
