I think you nailed it here. He’s starts the song off with silly, sad situations that aren’t “real”, and then somewhat chastises the audience for laughing at them. He then comes to the realisation that being funny is the answer and proceeds to make the last verse absolutely real and sad and the audience completely falls for it. It’s one thing to laugh about a kitten jumping out a tree to hang itself, but the woman at her daughters funeral is tragic, heartbreaking, devastating, and he tricks them into laughing. It’s almost like he was setting up the joke to be on them, and if not them, on comedy in general.
@shhsjjbbjs42242 жыл бұрын
i don’t think they’re laughing at the sad things in the second half though. i think they’re laughing at the fact that he’s saying they’re funny, which is a completely different thing

You misunderstand how Bo writes his songs/jokes. Similar to misconceptions about "Can't handle this" Bo NEVER antagonizes his audience. He made the people laugh at his "arc" and not the "jokes" he said in the last verse themselves.

No, he was actually joking about the holocaust and 9/11... because you are allowed to joke about things. They are terrible things of course but you can totally make jokes about it because that's what comedy is. Obviously he doesn't think those events are funny, but you can MAKE it funny. Like George Carlin said, "I believe you can joke about anything. It all depends on how you construct the joke. What the exaggeration is. Because every joke needs one exaggeration; every joke needs one thing to be way out of proportion."

Bo is the worlds greatest cynic right now. As far as I know. Of course his also cynical audience would laugh at the darkest of humor. Plus comedy does come from tragedy. Is it offensive? For sure. Should anyone care? That’s the question. “Are you joking at a time like this?”

About 15 years ago or so I read a (VERY nsfw) webcomic titled "Nana's everyday life." It was a fan-comic starring Nana, a girl from a particularly brutal (and very nsfw) manga/anime titled "Elfen Lied"... In this comic, Nana regularly got abused, mutilated, raped (pedobear made an early appearance) and was even killed a few times, and somehow the guy who made the comic had -- much like the maniacs behind the far more successful Cyanide & Happiness -- such a keen sense of where the line between "comedy" and "tragedy" was drawn that, ultimately, the comic could only be regarded as a deconstruction of the concepts of black comedy itself: It started out so horribly cruel that you'd laugh at how it crossed the line twice... then it became so horribly cruel that you'd laugh at just how far over the line it went... then it became so horribly cruel that you'd laugh in just plain shock at how dark it had become... and then it became so horribly cruel that you stopped laughing and started crying instead... About a dozen pages into the comic the "punchline" panel for one strip featuring one of Nana's many rapes was just the text *"IS THIS COMEDY?"* And unless you were a sadist or a complete sociopath, that was about when you started to get introspective and realized that maybe you shouldn't be laughing at any of this kinda shit...

i hate how dark humour has become "offensive and gruesome for the sake of being shocking". that's not what dark humour is at all, that's just disgusting. bo's work is a good example of actual dark humour. like in this song where he lists things that are sad but described in a comedic way, and then ends it with a message of how people like to make sad things funny so they don't need to feel empathetic all the time
@GrahamChapman2 жыл бұрын
@@Tulip_bip I hate how the anti-PC crowd have attempted (with some success, horribly enough) to turn decency, respect and the concept of having standards in regards to what's okay to laugh at and what is not into something ugly... I suppose that's roughly the same crowd and the same thing as you have issues with? People who regard the "point" of comedy to be to use it in order to punch down...

Not big on dark comedy, huh? To me, the more tragic, hard hitting, and real it is, the funnier it is. It's not the same kind of funny, not the feel-good kind, but a sort of melancholy funny. Sometimes life is just so perfectly and overbearingly tragic that the only instinct you have is to laugh hysterically. If you've never felt that way, and don't understand it, then I'm not sure what anyone could even say to explain it. But that's why a lot of people laugh at those parts. It's not because they aren't fully registering what he's saying (though perhaps some aren't), but because they _are_ registering it. And it's so horrible that it's hilarious.
@peterlewis21782 жыл бұрын
Of course, there's definitely commentary in this song about how comedy often takes tragedy and makes fun of it in a way that minimizes the reality of it, and how that can be a bad thing. But the underlying humor in this song behind that façade isn't doing that, because it's making it fully clear just how horrible these things are.
