I learned "Hustling Gamblers" (Country Blues, False Hearted Lovers Blues) from 1920s and 1960s recordings of Dock Boggs. My instrument is a fretless minstrel banjo made in England circa 1880 tuned ~ eCGFC.

KZbin interpreting this title as "f hashtag DGAD" somehow perfectly encapsulates Hick's struggle to preserve and promote authentic culture in this cock forest of a world...drop thumb that like button and toll the steeple bell if you agree.

So funny to think, I listen to pandora while I work and my friend that I work with. whom was born in Mexico, and at the very least has an appreciation for this music, heard this song by dock boggs and I explained the song to him and it sparked a whole conversation about people who were around for only money or other benefits in both of our lives. Such a universal song and an amazing rendition!

Clifton I wanted to thank you for all your teaching videos on the overhand style you taught me how to get a clearer ringing from my banjo through shwoing you hammer on the banjo head and hit a string with your nail by drumming into the head. Lord I was wondering how you got so clear notes to ring forth. And you sure are right overhand is not a simple style to learn you got to have real good timing to make it sound smooth. All love your pen pal from Germany.

Do you still have this banjo?? Of all the banjos I’ve seen you display, this has to be, in my opinion, the most unique. It has such a unique personality with such a full punchy sound. How/where did you come across this instrument?

That banjo was made in England, probably by R.A. Sanders ~ 1880. They are very rare in the U.S.; however, an English collector assures me they are only "scarce" in Britain.

I dont really use tuners I use to use one for the fiddle but Im so use to tuninf the fiddle now that I dont really have any use for one except I might get one for the banjo because its completly new to what would you recommend for a good tuner Iv just been using a tuning app on my phone but its not very good

I once learned sugar babe in this tuning, but could never figure out anything else out. That was about two years ago so i think its time for me to revisit this tuning. Very similar song structure to darlin cora which ive always played in gcgce. Sounds great Clifton, thanks for posting this one!

If you drop the g a half a step you're in Reuben tuning. If I'm performing solo I'll usually start in Cumberland then tuning up to Reuben and then this tuning and finally to standard then end it with modal. Just cuts down on tuning time. Keeps the crowd engaged.
@CliftonHicksbanjo

I do a similar thing, always use several predetermined tunings. If you have two or three banjos on stage that helps.

Lately i start with Cumberland Gap tuning as well. i like playing my arrangement of Last Chance in that tuning, and Hills of Mexico. Followed by standard g, model g, and end on GCGCE. I usually switch banjos for that last tuning. Cool to know im doing some similar things to yall.
