I am 81 and just had a pacemaker in Dec. 23. I liked the sounds of the 5 string banjo, so I got one for kicks and to slow me down a bit. My hands are messed up from the years. I have decided the only way for me ls the two finger style. After two months on trying different ways your video today has helped alot. THANK YOU!!

Hey Clifton! Fantastic lesson. I’ve been a long time guitar player/classically trained and always wanted to learn the banjo. I finally picked one up a few weeks ago and I’m gradually getting accustomed to various styles of play. The overhand approach will take some getting used to! I wonder whether you’d be interested in making up a tutorial for andy thorpe’s viral video of him playing to a fox on a mountain? It’s called “playing a banjo for a wild fox” and is what inspired me to finally pick myself up a banjo! Anyways, subscribed! Cheers!

i was having one heck of a time getting the strum pattern down. I mentally knew what to do but my hand just would not cooperate to save my life...3 MONTHS of trying like all hell for like 5-10 minutes at least 12- 15 times a day😂 But NOW !!! 😊👌good 2 go. I can safely say, a huge motivator to not just lop my hand off and burn it with the banjo was hearing how amazing it all sounded when you played. It is like watching magic happen. You hear all these notes but you never see what the hell is happening to make em, Kinda like the 3 card monte of music. you know whats going on but it takes a DAMN Good eye to spot it happening, I can't Thank YOU enough for being a motivator to stay at it, It is truly my main outlet now😊😊😊

I'm a guitarist, a heavy Hendrix and rock, electric blues, Chicago, country blues, delta blues, country, bluegrass, reggae, rock and more rock influenced player. I've been watching your vids since learning about you through Little Nora, who blew me away with her talent, and I am seriously considering taking up the banjo. I've got significant time on a mandolin as well but I think I may have held a banjo once. Lights were going off all through this vid. It never occurred to me that the banjo is essentially a drum and is played in a percussive fashion rather than finger picking as on a guitar. I can fingerpick on guitar but use a pick most of the time. Anyway, sorry for the novel but this video was most helpful: subbed and watching. Thanks, keep up the great work!

Clifton, I had been thinking about trying banjo for almost a year, a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon your videos and became obsessed over night. A week ago today, thanks to you, I finally pulled the string (pun intended) and ordered a banjo, my first attempt at a stringed instrument. While waiting for it to arrive, I watched this vid, and your thumb lead vid countless times. At first I thought, overhand looks easy, thumb lead looks harder. My banjo arrived last Thursday; I'd under estimated the difficulty of overhand. But 10 hours later (and more countless watches of your vid), I'm strumming a bum ditty rhythm, and it feels so good. Thank you. The way you explain things, it just makes sense.

After years of Scruggs style, three finger playing, I'm ready for your "overhand" aka Clawhammer method. Time for me to get my old banjar cleaned up and get my chops together. You choose to tune one step lower to the key of F. Do you have a specific reason for this?
@CliftonHicksbanjo

Thanks for writing, Yarn. I prefer tuning my Gs down to Fs or even Es because this arrangement best suits my singing voice. Also, before ~ 1900 there was no "standard concert pitch" (A = 440 Hz), so people were all over the place.

Great video. but the one thing I'm wondering. Is the reason for open F instead of the "standard" open G. I understand that the box pattern are same, and sonically it will be the same? But is this because of playability? Or you just happened to be tuned that way that day to do some of your songs or traditional banjo parts?
@CliftonHicksbanjo
@CliftonHicksbanjo 2 жыл бұрын
It is for singability. In order for me to sing with all strings of the banjo, it must be tuned lower.

@CliftonHicksbanjo
@CliftonHicksbanjo 3 жыл бұрын
The earliest documented use of the term "clawhammer" to describe banjo down-picking was the 1965 compilation album "Clawhammer Banjo." This album was produced in New York City, and featured recordings of Fred Cockerham, Kyle Creed, and George Stoneman--none of whom used the term to describe their music. When that album was introduced to the New York and D.C. folk music scenes that year, thousands of people began copying the playing style, and clawhammer banjo was born. Prior to 1965, "clawhammer" was a somewhat derogatory word used to differentiate self-taught fingerpicking from Scruggs (bluegrass) style banjo, and from the earlier fingerpicked "guitar style." Terms that _were_ historically used to describe down-picking include "drop-thumb," "hoedown," "rapping," and "overhand." I prefer to use terms that are actually rooted in pre-1960s folk culture, thus I avoid using the commercialized urban term, "clawhammer."

Hey mate, greeting from Australia. Love your videos and thanks for this lesson. I'm a beginner and have been practicing this method for about two weeks so far. Quick question: when striking individual notes for the melody, you mention that your fingernail is making contact with the banjo head between the strings. This seems almost impossible for me to do, as the strings are too far off the head to get my finger all the way down there. Do you think my action is too high or do I just need to hit it harder and force my finger down? If I force it down I end up bending the string above it with my forefinger. Thanks for any advice!

2:19 Not at all actually when you have perfect pitch! You mention specific things being problematic (like "Standard G-Tuning) since they don't apply to everyone. I'll use that terminology to say that people with perfect pitch don't see it this way at all! 😆 It can even be really weird sometimes- having to switch between different pitches... different colors... while they're written the same way... labeled with the same color name... Not everyone has relative pitch!

Banjo in general not specifically clawhammer. You mentioned getting pretty quick at changing tuning. Is that just changing the style of tuning from standard to either sawmill or double "C" or are you changing keys from G standard to F standard? I would like to play as a support instrument at church not every song is played in the same key. Do you have experience in a similar situation playing different songs in different keys? should I expect to change tuning styles, tuning keys, or both? Recently started using resources to work on two finger thumb lead, but would like to learn clawhammer also. Great videos. Thanks for any insight you can share.

Thanks .... I've had a banjo longer than I'd like to admit, and it often sounds like a Chinese guitar when I "play" .... I'm going to watching more of your info ...

Growing up playing crappy guitar, it's very hard for my head to grasp the idea of the 5th string. THAT SHOULD BE THE LOW NOTE!!! Hahaha!

I have wanted to learn to play banjo for several years, and Ive finally convinced myself I'm going to give it a go. This video was super helpful just for me as someone who hasnt yet taken the plunge to buying a banjo and starting, but to understand what I would need to do to get to playing.

Hi, one problem I have is when I rest my thumb on 5th string, not wanting to sound it like when I do a single strike, and lift my thumb up, it sounds the 5th string. Not very loudly but when I speed up play it ends up in a constant state of sounding. It’s quiet but noticeable. Any tips to rest the thumb without sounding the 5th string?

Great stuff, Ive been learning three finger style for about 6 months and this is a great intro into the other ways I can appreciate my banjo. Any tips for the 'strike' of the melody? I keep killing my notes when I try to hit them individually with the back of my finger.

Thanks for this! Especially good to hear the explanation of the plane one hits the strings at - none of the instruction books make this clear so it was very helpful to have that clarified. Best wishes! Russell, UK.
