If rack studs had a metal version I would be all over them. Unfortunately I don’t think they do. The Chatsworth clip nuts are something that I have used in my data center full of heavy expensive equipment exclusively for the last several years. While they are relatively pricey compared to standard cage nuts, the convenience is amazing and I agree with you and would never go back to standard cage nuts. I would recommend when you install the clip nuts that you put the spring towards the outer edges of your rack and not facing the inside like you did. The reason for this is that the sides of the equipment can push up against the spring and cause them to pop out which is definitely not something you want after you’ve already screwed a couple in on a large heavy piece of equipment... Rack studs, do you have a metal version? I’m sorry but I can’t trust my heavy gear to ABS or PVC plastic or whatever these are made out of.

When they start making the equipment out of pvc or abs, then I might be inclined to plastic mount hardware

@@TravisPickle Amen! Didn't buy all these expensive switches and test equipment to cut corners on questionable mounting hardware.

I just discovered the cage nut alternative options that are covered here. Both are great solutions with that could have different use cases. Rack Studs for smaller and lighter weight equipment. Clik-Nut for mounting servers. Once disadvantage to both is cost.

For servers you really shouldn't use either, and use rails instead.

Please, invest in a tripod... :) Rackstuds are awesome, but cant be used in all scenarios (UPS's for example).

Didn't know about Click-Nut's, building a 22u home lab rack and while racknuts are great they really only cover lighter 1U equipment which is fine for a lot of stuff but I'm expecting to install 2-3 4U servers so even though a bit pricy I might grab some of the Click Nuts to give them a try. Pretty much anything is better than old school cage nuts, I have the calloused fingers and a few scars to prove it!

Coming from the music world, why not just have threaded holes in server racks? Is there some advantage to having the square punch outs? Seems it would simplify things.

Who needs a tool to install or remove regular cage nuts? I'm doing this on a daily basis without any issues, you just have to buy quality and not cheap out on them
@wiebowesterhof
@wiebowesterhof 4 жыл бұрын
Flat screwdriver does the job, but still a PITB. Quality does matter, but although I spend the $$ myself, I often help out a bit on network installs for family in Ecuador and here, cheap is king. Unfortunately I doubt any of the proposed alternatives would work out for the same $$ restriction, if you can even buy it. For heavy equipment I wouldn't trust the rack studs, but for switches and small equipment shelves, it looks promising. Hopefully when I'm in the US next, I can grab a few bags of these.

@@wiebowesterhof Well I surely won't use those to mount a switch that costs 15k $ and more, even though it is mounted with rails from behind as well
@wiebowesterhof
@wiebowesterhof 4 жыл бұрын
@@sitte24 I couldn't agree more. it would likely exceed the max limits for the rackstuds (they have variants) and when the gear is that expensive, spending a little more on ensuring it doesn't fall down seems like the right choice for sure!

Either or is way better than the old one, I do agree that the rackstuds probably win due to the ability to mount the equipment without trying to balance the hardware on one hand while you're trying to get the the bolt in.

I have use the Chatsworth click nuts for several years and they are excellent and I have never had one fail. I would not trust some plastic studs to hold up my expensive gear but maybe your gear is not so heavy.
@datalinq

@@PeteKowalsky we would only use this sort of thing for switches, routers, cable tidy and patch panels, server equipment etc normally go on rails and are supported back and front. Also none of these are available in Australia and we're stuck with the common garden cage nuts. So i'm not qualified to say if the rackstuds can or can't hold weight.
@PeteKowalsky
@PeteKowalsky 4 жыл бұрын
@@datalinq Good thoughts, sir. I do suppose if you have "rapid rails" or the kind with in-built metal "studs" to hold the weight, that's likely just fine. I still don't think I'd trust them (plastic RackStuds) to hold a piece of expensive gear, however, no matter the weight. Especially in any geologically active zones where earthquakes are more common. I have gear in the Valley in CA, Tokyo, and Singapore, so maybe that's part of my "paranoia" as well. 😉 If they work for you, go for it dude - not trying to tell you what's right or wrong!
