It is so good to see her looking so happy and fulfilled singing great American songs - her new repertoire. Ok her voice has aged , but 90% of Jessye Norman's voice equals a 100% of many others.

I was in Paris for their Bicentennial, at La Madeleine and everyone was celebrating, loudly,A voice came into ear shot, and it was Ms. Norman singing Les Marseilles! Understood every syllable she was so articulate. Saw it many years later on KZbin, as we couldn't see it from la Madeleine, Norman, American, dressed in the French Flag singing their National 'Hymn' for the millions there.Spellbinding with such sentiment! A goose bump moment. KZbin it, if interested. Astounds the senses!

During her career she sang in operas by Wagner, which requires a huge voice. She sang Sieglinde at the Met, and Isolde and Brunnhilde in concert. She is one of my favorite operatic singers.

I think we can say much more about he German tan about her singing! Her German is really, surprisingly good (both grammar and pronunciation). She did not do half as well in Paris at the opening of L'Opera de la Bastille where she sang Les Huguenots. The US-friendly music critic of L'Express remarked "we applauded, but we couldn;t understand a word she was saying."

Her voice is simply shot.

Having seen (as a wonderstruck nine-year old) the great Patricia Neway define this song in the original broadway cast production, in the Shubert Theatre- well, I'll leave it there. My parents informed me years later that when Ms. Neway hit her climactic high note, I literally fainted.

I love Jessye but I don't like this kind of jazzy piano arrangement. I don't think it fits the character of the song

Too much meddling with the original melody!! It lost a lot of simple natural beauty!! This did nothing for me!

She should stick to notes Richard Rodgers wrote. Honesty was completely lost by fooling around.

vocalissimo1 she has always sang flat - obviously not as seriously as this, but there was always a strong tenancy especially at the top - it has always irritated me.
@Tenortalker8 жыл бұрын
Whenever I heard her live in the theatre the flatting was not so obvious and didn't disturb my perfect pitch too much - more to do with the emphasis on rich lower harmonics in her timbre. The voice needed a proper concert hall / opera house acoustic to sound well and blossom in resonance I think. However when broadcast there were moments when she didn't seem on top of the pitch and particularly at the top as you suggest. I think the transmission and recording process flattened some of the harmonics out. Hers is not the first very beautiful timbre to sound flat on TV and she has left a legacy of great performances..

Acacia Bloom and your stupid comment irritates me. You think she cares about what you said? She didn’t then and since her passing doesn’t now. If you can do better, let’s hear you. Whoever and whatever you are, bye.
