Patricia Neway one of the greatest voices to grace the Broadway stage. Can you imagine how proud she must have been to introduce this great song to the world? She was unique. The only singer with a similar splendour in her take on the role is Constance Shacklock in the original London cast recording .Constance was older than Patricia when she sang it and just retiring from her opera career, but she made a fine job of the role. Wouldn't it be nice to have real singers and no microphones on stage these day! Then we could appreciate the real sound of the voices without the distortions of technology. Glorious.

Tenortalker Nice to know that the great Constance Shacklock was in "The Sound of Music" in London. I have a live recording of Ms. Shacklock and Kirsten Flagstad, probably the greatest Wagnerian soprano of all time, singing "Tristan Und Isolde" from Covent Garden about 1951.

@@detectivefiction3701Let’s start out by saying this video is of monumental historical importance. She’s the “creator” of this now iconic role. Miss Neway WAS a soprano when she began her career. Unfortunately the long run of Magda Sorel in Menotti’s The Consul on Broadway in 1950 took a heavy toll on her voice. She does sound like a mezzo soprano here, 8 years later at age 38-39, and it was probably her choice. She darkened the color of her voice and stayed in the mezzo soprano range. Mother Abbess can be sung well by all operatic mezzo sopranos. The role sits in the upper stretches for only 2 or 3 measures, and requires nothing higher than one high A-flat.

The original Broadway production of "The Sound of Music", starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. I was 10 years old and already collecting Broadway musicals on L.P. records. I bought "The Sound of Music" with Mary Martin and Patricia Neway and loved every song on the record. Oh, yeah, that's better! I've been plodding through all kinds of versions and this one's one of the better ones. This song can be awfully boring, especially in the very first phrase, which presents a challenge since that's when the singer courts the audience. Each note has to be filled up from the top down and bottom up at the same time. She does this superbly. Each note has to lead, full, to the next full note, which echoes and fulfills the lyric. Masterful. Honorable mentions to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (a very different approach) and, knock me over with a feather, Tony Bennett of all people. But he does have that low/high split in his notes.
