Considering Andreas is also an athlete with good strength, balance, coordination and flexibility I think he would do good in climbing as well. Obviously not Magnus level but he'll be better than most beginners, same with Magnus I think he was better than most beginners are at grappling. The part where he says...shit!...just warm up! Gave me a good laugh.

Better than most other athletes but he still would struggle a lot. Body positioning and centre of mass are completely diametral in these sports. Climbing is focused on making it as easy as possible for yourself to move vertically, martial arts need a low and heavy centre of mass to not get thrown around easily.

@@artisdying i agree with you! i mean, i think he would do well in the overhang because of his core strengh. I did myself 4 year JJ and it require a quite good finger strengh too. I need to do some research, wanna know wicht wightclass he is, maybe FW?
@artisdying

@@baserapeumad2826 Definitely. He's got a strong core, strong forearms, flexibility and explosiveness. Finger strenghth though are completely different things in BJJ/JJ and climbing. Only way you can condition your fingers to learn crimping is to crimp. No other sport will even slightly prepare you, not even gymnastics or calisthenics.

I've done a few years of BJJ and I have to say Magnus looks really good form wise from about 6:40 to 8:50. The way he's using his hips, sprawling, scrambling for top position are all things taught in BJJ and it takes most students much longer than one session to learn these concepts, let alone utilize them in live training. BJJ blue belt here, Magnus has great instincts and athleticism. He did excellent for a first time grappler. That being said, the MMA guy doesn’t train pure grappling and it shows, he’s probably around a upper blue belt or purple belt maximum in terms of grappling skill level. That can be expected since the MMA guy himself stated that he considers himself more Muay Thai oriented. MAGNUS absolutely start grappling. I don't think it would have made a difference if he showed him some submissions before. Because you cannot apply them just by trying a submission a few times. Hallo Magnus, it is really unfortunate that the grappler didn't teach you anything before you grappled. With only 5 minutes of good instructions you would literally perform 100% better. Instead he let you exhaust yourself purposelessly. Three ideas 1)Fight for underhook (and crossface position) 2)Frame to alleviate weight (and make space to initiate movement) 3)Don't solely rely on muscle strength in order to restrict and tire your opponent. You can use gravity to your advantage by maintaining as much of your weight as possible on top him (and not on the floor) (muscle gets tired, gravity is always free) It was very good idea to try grappling, i would encourage you to try it more with other videos and not hasten to dismiss it. You will be very good if you have some guidance and i think you will like it too. Best wishes

I agree that some training would have been helpful but I can't help feeling that no amount of knowledge that could've come in a day would've been better than just grappling with someone and figuring out how to survive for a bit. The MMA practicioner is obviously a high belt in BJJ, I don't think any tips would've helped if the practicioner truly tries.

@@Billycca3 The point of instructions would not be to make Magnus comparable to the mma fighter. The point would be to give a taste of what grappling is. By letting a complete beginner go to a constantly tense survival mode, you deprive him of every bit of joule of energy in the first 10 minutes of effort, and then he is unable even to hold a glass of water. And then there is no training. If on the other hand, something like this was taking place, training would be much better: let's flow at 20% of our power...ok good..relax your grips and try to use your weight more instead...look what i did here, i got the underhook and now i have the advantage, regain it... exactly, swim the hand inside and regain it.. now i swept you, and i am trying to put weight on you, what will you do?.. frame to my neck, you see? i can't put weight easily any more, now frame with your knees too.. you see? try to relax the tension and breathe.. now let's try another 20% of power at 40% and so on... Do not underestimate what a skillful first teaching private can achieve. .

I think he did but they cut it out of the video. As is evident because he knows how to sprawl and cross his legs to avoid the mount.

dane dane you said it very well! Stole the words from my lips (or from the keyboard in this case). Even a minimal explanation about basic techniques would have made a huge difference in Magnus performance. Would be much more enjoyable for him and viewers.

I would love to see Andreas climb . . . it would be super cool seeing how transferable his skills/strength is to climbing. Also, can I just say Magnus, I love how we can see a little bit of your sense of humor in every video, and that you don't take yourself too seriously, even when you're trying really hard. I really respect that

YES MORE! This was so much fun. I love seeing you do stuff you arent a specialist in. I know you will climb up whatever, but seeing what else you could do with athleticism and heart is really interesting. This was a hard one since he never showed you how to do things. I did Judo for many years, so I know how helpless you really were in submission grappling. But he had to work for it, so once you learn some basics he will have to be more careful..:) There is very little chance of him escaping your holds once you lock on correctly. By the way, VERY good edit!
