Just so people are aware there have been a couple of really high profile accidents involving shunts for top rope soloing (see the most recent event at red river gorge where the shunt was disconnected from the rope). While ripperkon is using a backup here, it's probably worth exploring using a device that is not shunt for TRS with an additional backup.

Thank you for the comment. This is indeed important to know. Backup is mandatory. I started trying the Taz Lov 3. It feels promising.

This really seems like an excellent set up. I'm using a clog and prusik, but the prusiks is a bit irritating. I'll consider this one. Shunts has a bad rep, but used in the right way, it looks safe as anything else.

The one activity I use the Shunt for... Top Roping. I keep Shunt high and a third hand above the Shunt..
@ripperkonАй бұрын
Does the shunt work well like that? With the shape of it I was worried, that the third hand (a Prusik like hitch?) could slide into the device and causes a fatal failure.
@sergeantcrowАй бұрын
@@ripperkon Hi.. Oh ! You are far more experienced than me.. I should say I use Shunt Chest high and the third hand Head high... on an extension.. That's mostly on easy climbs where it is easy to keep raising both.. However I learn from You.. and others.. ( Thank you for your contribution..) and will review everyone I can on here.. Then adapt.. I hope all is going well for you.. : )

Thanks for the video! I dont quite get how or why the shunt doesnt work with two ropes.... It certanly does if both ropes are loaded, I dont really get why it doesnt if one is loose... Eh, I'll try it out :D (yesterday my setup was, that I put my rope through the anker, both sides were hangin down, and I used a shunt for both, and as a backup I just put a prusik on. I didnt have big falls, but it caught me, when I slipped. Although I have to say, on two ropes, and with a thicker rope, it didnt really come on its own, I always had to help the shunt to follow me.

Thank you for your insights. Have you heard of or even tested the camp goblin. And do you have a opinion about the device? Thanks
@ripperkon3 жыл бұрын
Sadly I haven't tested the Goblin. But I think that's maybe because in the beginning it was important for me to use ropes thinner than 9mm.
@golopeters11523 жыл бұрын
@@ripperkon hi, I did test the goblin now at ith a climbing spot in northern Germany. Works super well. I used a teufelberger superstatic (11 mm I think). Unfortunately the redundancy with a petzl basic or a prusik did not work properly. But I will try a klemmheist or schwäbisvh prusik next time. But your gearsetup looks superwell

@@golopeters1152 What was the issue with goblin and Petzl basic as a backup (maybe on a dogbone to keep it separated)? It looks like it should work beautifully.
@golopeters11522 жыл бұрын
I think that was the issue. It wasn't separated. But did not have the time to try it again.

Question: did the shunt ever failed?
@ripperkon2 жыл бұрын
Not when I was using it. But I seems like there have been several fatal fails. And some of these people did not use a second device as a backup… Petzl even made a post about that topic some weeks or months ago.
@wernerredweik61989 ай бұрын
Attention: the SHUNT DOES NOT ALWAYS BLOCK when the rope is fixed over a roof and you are climbing under the roof and fall. Happened to a friend. The jümar till now has never failed.
@ripperkon9 ай бұрын
Yes, that’s right. This is why I added the jumar. I even had the jumar fail, when ice build up inside.

Thx. I am not sure if I like sand rocks. Knots as protection and sandy fingers are kind of strange. But maybe because I am just not used to it :D I think I will try the 'Elbsandstein' area here in Germany at first.

Haben die Karabiner einen besonderen Vorteil?
@ripperkon3 жыл бұрын

Often i use the shunt but rather than clipping in…. Use 8 or 9 mm cord and tie the shunt into tie in points….. then w good measurements extra cord can be used as a chest harness to pull it up hands free

I use 2 Ropeman 2 for ice climbing. I tie backup knots and clip them with a quickdraw to prevent the knot from slipping. Any reason you use this setup over the double Ropeman 2?
@ripperkon3 жыл бұрын
Sounds also nice. What knots do you use as a backup knot? I still like the double ropeman2 setup with two ropes. But since I started to do more multi pitch rope solo (with one rope) I prefer this setup. And with thicker ropes the ropeman2 has a bit more friction then the Petzl ascender and Petzl Shunt. So generating slack in the system is more likely.
