Thanks for this great video. I did the exact same route in March 1992 with my wife and 2 good friends when we were 30. It is pleasing to see how little it has changed. With 1 big exception. We 4 and our guide were the only people at the top, maybe because we were slow and late to arrive, although I suspect there are more trekkers now than then. Also we did not have any snow (or rain). I think we were very lucky. This video brought back some great memories. But like you I found it to be the hardest thing I have ever done. The slog to Kibo Hut was hard work and the summit day was miserable but simultaneously one of the best days of my life. I have actually found it to be quite life changing in that I now know I have reserves I never previously suspected. I often draw on my memory of this challenge when I am struggling with something. To anyone contemplating this climb, just do it! But do some training as the fitter you are the more you will enjoy it. Or the less you will hate it. Just remember that however hard you find it, if you succeed you will have the memory of the achievement for your whole life. Not a bad return for a 3 day stroll plus 2 days hard work.

Great video. It's always advised to take the Northern circuit, it's longer (9 days) but great for acclimatization, resulting in the highest success rates than all other routes, May be Olivia could've made it

Amazing video! Love your videos in general, but this was special. In 2015 I did the Machame route (7 days) for a TV program in the Netherlands. As the producer I walked up that mountain with 6 visually impaired persons and 2 blindfolded hosts. It was the best experience ever and I would do it all again tomorrow. Thanks for sharing this amazing video and keep up your amazing work! I hope, looking back, you've enjoyed your time on that magical mountain as much as I did. All the best!

Congratulations! Fantastic to watch this. A good friend is climbing next week for a hospital charity in the UK. A very worthy cause as his little boy almost died and would have not survived without the specialist equipment that saved his life. His mum, my best friend is so worried about her son doing this, but I can honestly say that I will show her this to give her some reassurance that you’re looked after so well all the way to the top and that help is immediate should you need it like Olivia did. Well done Olivia for trying. Not many can say they’ve climbed Kilimanjaro, even if not all the way to the top; but YOU CAN 🤗 good lass, congratulations. Thank you for filming this, it’s very reassuring and fantastic to see what it’s like. I’ll be able to be with Carl in my dreams now! Wishing my friends son all the luck in the world on such a fantastic adventure for such a worthy cause. Good luck Carl 🤗🤗🤗👍🏻👏🏻💕

Great effort from both of you. Olivia don't feel disappointed with yourself - you are young enough to come back and be more prepared. It is a shock to the system when elevating to high altitudes. I got ill traveling in the Himalaya many years ago because I was not aware of the altitude/thinness of air/strength of the sun, etc. I thought I was invincible...but in reality I was poorly prepared!

15:10 finally, Tanzania! I always thought it would be a good idea to build structures at the last camp grounds ...incase of an emergency or severe altitude sickness. Mount Everest is just a grave yard of people; who ran into weather systems; not a lack of experience or health issues.
@ok-lv1qy4 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few deceased on Everest who severely lacked experience as many, many other climbers there do. I am specifically thinking of one woman in particular that I saw footage of her Sherpa showing her how to put on her crampons and other mountaineering basics. She died on her decent. People like her, complete beginners, or other weak climbers, put the other climbers (and more importantly the Sherpas) in danger by creating huge traffic jams. When that weather system rolls in people can't get out because of someones lack of experience. Or the 60+ year old Indian man who killed himself and almost killed his 16 year old Sherpa, who was lucky to have only lost all his fingers to frost bite. Due to negligence and lack of experience.

If you are not a seasoned mountain climber, Kilimanjaro is no picnic and the hardest thing you will ever do. If you were dropped on the top of an almost 20,000 ft mountain, you would suffocate immediately. Acclimating to the altitude is critical. If you go over there fully unprepared, you will not make it and come off that mountain sick. You will also thank heaven that going up the Barranca Wall in only on the ascent as the decent takes another route.
