A good weather ascent of the Mt Rainier. It is long, it is not fun, but the view is kind of worth it.
We took a day to practice some mountaineering skills and we were able to get the free walk in permits on a Thursday, in addition to paying $50 for the Rainier Pass Annual Climbing Fee online.
Special Thanks to Spirit of Adventure!

Hi there, I’m doing Mount Rainier with 2 others in a week. How difficult would you say climbing the DC be unguided? We have extensive alpine experience and I soloed Mount Hood too. Any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙌🏽

Thanks for the video. I'm climbing Rainier in a month. Totally excited but nervous. I'm hoping my preparation will be enough. It seemed like several of your group were really suffering physically. What do you attribute that to? Was their training insufficient? What did they do to train? Im just curious because I would like to avoid a sufferfest if at all possible. I know of it is a challenging climb, but how can one be the best prepared they can?

I would argue that those who barely made it were out of shape. In the case of one guy he was in his 70s and his hips and legs couldn’t handle the big rocky steps on the cleaver. I think as a group we didn’t eat enough while hiking and this had less energy, but it is a long day. If you’ve been doing like 10 mile hikes with a full pack you should be more than fine but regardless I’ve found mountaineering is a sufferfest. Depending on your training and the weather will determine whether you suffer a little or a lot.

@@pebblepusher9264 Thanks for the reply. I've only done one other mountaineering expedition on glaciers, but I have many other climbs/hikes of various lengths. Some were harder than others. What type of training did your do specifically for Mt. Rainier? I'm using a plan I purchased from Mountain Tactical Institute. How heavy were your packs during the climb? Thanks for the info.

Personally I have a pretty good base level of fitness from all of the other activities I do so I only went on a few speed hikes of 5 ish miles with a 40lb pack. My pack was between 40-50 lbs going up the snow field to camp Muir the first day and then for the summit day I used a day pack that might have weighed 10lbs with food and water

Like I said though if you can do a 10 mile hike with a 40lbs pack you should make it so long as you keep your head in the game, drink enough water and eat enough food.

maxpatch67 it’s a meetup group based in the North Bay Area with a few core members that plans lots of events. David is the one that leads the mountaineering groups but things fill up fast plus they don’t just let random people come on big trips without hanging out with you first. Also they likely won’t do Mt Rainier again for a couple of years
