Really cool video man, thanks for sharing. It's such an amazing place. You're right about the trail being tough! That's awesome you saw the deer and the coyote. I have always started the hike in the dark around midnight, like you, and it is so much harder to navigate. Another commenter mentioned hiking the first few miles up to lone pine lake, in the daylight beforehand. I agree that's a great piece of advice. Congrats on your adventure it was really fun to watch. Happy Hiking.

Looks like a great hike for you! We just did it a few weekends ago and it was the most amazing hike ever 🤩

Such a monumental hike! Did it last year and said I'd never do it again, but alas, my permit to do it a 2nd time is this coming weekend. Congratulations on a VERY challenging hike!

It's advisable to hike the trail in daylight to familiarize it before attempting to navigate at night. The first 2 1/2 miles to Lone Pine Lake can be hiked without a permit, which is sufficient to perform in the dark before sunrise. Starting at 4:30-5 am is sufficient to complete the rest of the trail before sundown, which is about 16 hours RT.

00:40. A slight bit of misinformation ... "as hikers approach Trail Camp they'll need to choose between 2 route options..." The turn-off to the Mountaineer's Route is about 5 1/2 miles before Trail Camp. The turn-off is only 1/2 mile from the Portal trailhead, just before the first stream crossing.

isn't the mountain route turn where the stream is with the sign that says "Lone Pine Creek North Fork" ?
@aliensoup242022 сағат бұрын
@@jasonblundo1249 Yes. That is approx. 0.8 mi. from the trailhead. My memory was faulty. I reconfirmed the location just this weekend - I hiked up to Lone Pine Lake. I passed 2 rangers that were replacing the sign. It is at the 2nd water crossing. The first water crossing is very narrow, and hardly a stream, depending on the time of year.

Hi Nathan, I'm doing Whitney for the first time on Sept. 5th (in a day). I was going to ask if you used the AllTrails to help you stay on trail, then you mentioned it. I like how it has a little alarm if it detects you moving off-trail, so you can fix it before you get too far.

Hi! Yes, I used AllTrails. There was enough service at Whitney Portal to launch the app and I checked it when I thought I was off trail and it worked well. Make sure to put your phone in airplane mode when you start or the app will drain your battery. You can also carry a small battery pack.

Question: What's in your pack?

Hi! I had crampons and a helmet. Also carried the normal things: food, water, water purifier, and basic camera equipment.
